What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

I was going to be called Fox if I was a boy for this exact reason. My dad loved the show I'm half glad I'm a female and got lumbered with my name. If I see older people who ask for my name they always go as in Scully?? 😂😂

Rubyupbeat · 22/09/2020 22:05

Atticus, being a great fan of 'to kill a mockingbird' but got a big NO!
agreed on Harper for a girl, thank goodness it was a boy, nowadays Harper is such a popular and chavvy name, thanks to the Beckhams!

SeaSandandSun · 22/09/2020 22:05

Anna.

My surname is Bell.

Off to name change now! 😂

PablosHoney · 22/09/2020 22:08

I know someone who’s son is called Atticus

lyralalala · 22/09/2020 22:09

If I was a boy I was going to be called Thiago... Random name for a kid in the Scottish highlands.

Amusingly I mentioned that to a counsellor once and he said "Oh that's an unusual name" and he genuinely didn't know what to say when I told him that until I changed my name at 14 I was called Starlight and spent years wishing I'd been a boy called Thiago. They might as well have called me "Bullymeplease" saddling me with that name

lyralalala · 22/09/2020 22:10

Wrong names thread, sorry!

reluctantbrit · 22/09/2020 22:14

For a boy DH wanted Erik or Lukas which are the German spellings. I refused to choose a name my child had to spell all the time (my name is highly unusual and always been misspelt and people guess the sex).

The same with Arne or Svenja, DH’s colleagues couldn’t pronounce it properly. He was so desperate for a Germanic name. I didn’t care where the name comes from, just that it is pronounceable and the sex is identifiable.

Luckily we have a girl. I loved the boys name we agreeed on in the end but her name is making life a lot easier for her.

Jaded1 · 22/09/2020 22:15

Scarlet - I love it but my name is also another significant Gone With The Wind name 😬

ToffeePennie · 22/09/2020 22:16

I wanted Jack but due to a certain family member being abused by a person with that name, I can’t.
I also really liked Henry/Freddie.
If we’d had girls I loved Daisy and Clara, but I had boys. And I would have been banned from using Daisy because my DH hates it.

ALittlePitchy · 22/09/2020 22:24

DC would’ve been River and Bluebell if DH hadn’t vetoed them. I can only assume pregnancy hormones were at play here!

I loved Orla until someone said it was like Oral Blush
I like Clementine but can’t stand Clemmie as it’s too much like clammy.

It was a nightmare choosing names to be honest, that’s the trouble with being a teacher! DH liked Olivia but I must have taught 2456853 of them!

Hmmmm2018 · 22/09/2020 22:40

So many, Persephone the main one though, need to get a cat to give the name to

bettythebuilder · 22/09/2020 22:43

Christmas, Kit for short.
I was in labour when this bright idea popped into my head (we hadn't really agreed on a boy's name and didn't know what sex the baby was). The midwife was not impressed!
I still really like it, but dd when I told her said she was mightily relieved she's a girl.

Mashingthecompost · 22/09/2020 22:45

SimonJT I know a dog named link! I wondered whether that one was named after the Zelda character, too. It's a cool name I reckon. My kid would agree, he loves BOTW right now.

Mashingthecompost · 22/09/2020 22:47

I love starlight. I can see it being very spotlight-y though. Was it Rainbow Brite inspired?

Mashingthecompost · 22/09/2020 22:51

I know this isn't what this thread is for but I encountered a DeNiro once. (I got the name I wanted the first time and I'm saving all my ludicrous names in case we manage to have another.)

FOKKYFC · 22/09/2020 22:52

@Tunnocks34

I wanted to call my first born son Augustus, Gus for short. Husband said no.

I also loved Ernest and Herbert but my husband didnt

I've got an Augusta. Got a fair number of dissenting judgements while pregnant but I'd made up my mind and - most - people have come around 😉
lyralalala · 22/09/2020 22:54

@Mashingthecompost

It was because I was born at night and my (very drunk) mother kept commenting on the stars outside.

Massively spotlight-y. For context until I was 7 and went to live with my Grandparents I lived in a tiny village. my siblings and cousins who also lived there had names like Gary, Michelle, Stuart, Nicola, Fraser, Tracy and Daniel. Then there was me - I can laugh now, but it was hellish.

SingingSands · 22/09/2020 23:04

DH wanted Hermione or Sasha.

Hermione was vetoed as in 2004 the Harry Potter reference would have been too strong. Such a shame as DD would totally have rocked it and she loves the name.

Sasha was vetoed because we already had a cat called Sasha. DH clearly hadn't that one through Grin

ThighthighOfthigh · 22/09/2020 23:04

I love Salomé but I just can't get past the head on a platter.

rosydreams · 22/09/2020 23:08

for middle names it was Jane after gran or Elizabeth after my sister ,we went with Jane .I wanted Elizabeth but her initials would spell jes the name makes me cringe after my ex cheated on me with a underage girl

her first name is Jennifer i wanted Beatrice but my other half didn't like it

TheySeeHerRowling · 22/09/2020 23:11

I loved Rhiannon ('no, we aren't Welsh') and Ciaran ('no, we aren't Irish', even though my dad was)

I was lucky in that all my family and friends having children before me used names I couldn't stand - thanks, all Grin

bogoffmda · 22/09/2020 23:12

Thomas - family name which my Ex said no to for eithe of our boys but let OW call his 3d child Thomas.

It still sticks in my gut today.

BikeRunSki · 22/09/2020 23:15

Lorelei - DM is very well read on mythology etc and said “but the Lorelei were complete bitches”, and that kind of ruined it for me.

AliTheMinx · 22/09/2020 23:20

I quite liked Beau for a boy, and it would have been nice with our surname (beginning with B), but DH wasn't keen. For a girl, I Ioved Alexina, which was a Scottish name I found on our family tree.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 22/09/2020 23:20

Dara for a boy. I had 2 girls.
