To say that Tom Hardy as James Bond is all wrong

I just cannot get my head around him being the new James Bond. He just isn’t that. I know exactly what he will do to James Bond and if I know that already, why would I want to see the movie?
Please give us someone else. 😖

@LakieLady

I also think James Norton would make an excellent Bond

He'd be very good, but I think he may not want to be tied in for several films.

Aidan Turner would be good, and would bring something rather different to the role imo.

Aidan Turner, yes! Smile

I'd love to see Daniel Kaluuya as Bond....

IcedPurple · 20/09/2020 19:34

@Totickleamockingbird

A white posh man thing is an issue, yes. I don’t know the solution though. A new book? Or may be just ditch the idea of a non-white, male Bond? I don’t know. My first choice was always Idris Elba but he is now too old for Bond. Daniel Craig shouldn’t have happened. Elba should have. But we can’t change that now.
Why?

The character was written as a white, posh male. That's what James Bond is. Surely a better 'solution' would be to have more roles for a more diverse range of characters, not change one of the classic characters of the past century to suit current ideas.

@IcedPurple
A huge part of the Bond audience has never even opened the books but the film will bomb without them. Idris Elba did have the clout to pull it off so I said I would love to see him doing that role.
It’s a bit like The Night Manager: you cannot imagine Tom Hiddleston pulling it off until you do. Movies don’t need to follow the books always. They should tell a coherent and relevant story though.
If Bond legacy is to live on, It will need to live in the current times.

By 'live in the current times' do you mean have no "posh white men" on the screen? Even if that's how they were written?

And while it's true that the vast majority of cinema goers haven't read the books, that doesn't mean they don't have certain expectations of what Bond should be. There are tons of action franchises, but James Bond is James Bond. I don't think audiences are clamouring for the role to be radically changed, though the chattering classes may be.

Tallpaulwho · 20/09/2020 19:50

Please stop suggesting bad actors like Heughan. Tom Hardy wouldn't be my choice but he is a fantastic actor at least.
Chiwetal Eijofor would also be a great choice.

Tallpaulwho · 20/09/2020 19:52

And Chadwick Bosreman would have a great choice as Bond too IMO.

Wakanda forever.

MorganKitten · 20/09/2020 19:53

@Wildthingsx

James Bond is meant to be a well educated Englishman - not saying Tom Hardy isn’t but he always brings a working class ‘bitta rough’ to roles

Which is great Grin but not for bond !!!

He played a great clone of Patrick Stewart in Star Trek, not a hint of working class there at all.
Totickleamockingbird · 20/09/2020 19:53

@IcedPurple
Don’t you think we have had enough of white, posh boys at the top? With a much younger girl (aka show piece) to boot?
Times have moved on. Leading franchises should too. If Bond women can grow into substantial characters (Gemma Arterton anyone?), so can Bond.

flourbroach · 20/09/2020 19:54

I've always thought that Clive Owen should be given a crack at James Bond.

thirtyfuckingfive · 20/09/2020 19:55

Are you on glue OP?

He's perfect 😍

Totickleamockingbird · 20/09/2020 19:56

I used Gemma Arterton’s Bond girl as a prime example of wasted talent.

As I've said above, I would love to see a greater variety of roles in TV and cinema. However, that doesn't mean rewriting classic characters just to score 'diversity' points.

Sam Heughan is not a bad actor at all. He has far more range than is required for Bond. And Eijofor will be an awesome choice 😍!

I had forgotten about star trek! I have heard him speak in real life so to speak and he speaks very well. Tom hiddleston is OK but not a bond. He also looks better with his hair like it was when he played loki.

Far too good for Bond!
RelaisBlu · 20/09/2020 20:45

I still haven't got over Tom Hardy in TABOO - he was completely mesmerising

eatsleepread · 20/09/2020 21:03

YANBU. I really like him, but cannot imagine him as Bond. And although very attractive, he doesn't appear 'chiselled' or refined enough.

MrsExpo · 20/09/2020 21:05

Who???

..... goes off to google ......

TheSpottedZebra · 20/09/2020 21:11

I vote Riz Ahmed. In real life he is also a rapper AND has PPE from oxford. He'd be totally believable as a modern day spy. And is as hot as hell. Is he tall enough though?

It won't be Tom Hardy it's never a really well known actor. Sam Heughan way too fey surely?

And it has to be a british actor IMHO but by no means necessarily white.

TheSpottedZebra · 20/09/2020 21:14

I love this excerpt about TH from popbitch:

It must be tricky when you’re consistently cast as an ass-kicking action hero not to let it go to your head.
&Bruce Willis, for example, has played so many army men in films that he genuinely believes he is good at war and could fight like some sort of super-soldier if he ever needed to.

Tom Hardy believes the same thing about himself too – but he has gone one further. Hardy has been telling people that he has actually been recruited by the SAS on a sort of ad hoc basis. Obviously they don’t need him on day-to-day duties, but he claims that they’ve hired him to be on call if shit ever goes down.

Hyperfish101 · 20/09/2020 21:18

Richard Madden could do it.

KurriKawari · 20/09/2020 21:23

TH is great, absolutely amazing but Bond isn't for him and he isn't for Bond. Also think if he was to accept it, we would be robbed of seeing him in roles that are more challenging and right for him. I can see the appeal of saying yes to such an iconic role, but he is too good for it.

GuyFawkesDay · 20/09/2020 21:50

Theo James?

TruffleShuffles · 20/09/2020 21:59

How about Domnhall Gleeson, if we can have a blonde bond surely we can have a red head? He can definitely pull off the posh English accent and he looks great in a suit.
