To ask (lightheartedly) what’s the most bizarre or confusing “because of Covid” you’ve heard?

My next door neighbour has had someone else walk her dog for her since lockdown “because of covid”. Never goes further than her garden. Such a shame because daily walks have never been banned and I’m sure the change of scene would benefit her and her dog would love her to take him!

Just wondered if anyone else has come across bizarre things being done or not done “because of covid?”.

Disclaimer - this is a light hearted thread just to help see the funny side a bit for my own sanity. It’s not meant to be dismissive of people’s genuine experiences or fears.

What I find strange is how people decide that certain things are safe or unsafe, seemingly only based on their own personal opinion. Someone I know refuses to take public transport and orders all his shopping online "because of Covid", but happily goes to pubs and restaurants several times a week, because this is "low risk" according to him.

Ihatesandwiches · 19/09/2020 23:13

Maybe she was shielding but still wanted pooch to have a walk? We walk our shielded next door neighbours dog every day now. It's a thing :-).

MamaGothel · 19/09/2020 23:19

I'm lucky enough to have a few local childrens centres that I've made good use of over the years. However they have completely closed down until 2021 "because of covid" even though private baby groups that do the exact same thing for £8 a session (and you have to pay a full term in advance) are still going. My 4 month old baby has been weighed twice, last time 8 weeks, even thought I'm worried about his weight gain "because of covid".

AldiAisleofCrap · 19/09/2020 23:23

The children centre makes sense because they are not putting profit over safety. The dog lady is rational and sensible. These post are bizarre in themselves!

MamaGothel · 19/09/2020 23:27

I disagree, some people are just determined to stay working from home because it suits them better

AldiAisleofCrap · 19/09/2020 23:41

Well it’s suits people better not to be at risk of catching Covid obviously.

ekidmxcl · 19/09/2020 23:45

All of the parking spaces in our high street have been blocked off because of covid.

Wide pavements, not a huge town, no problems with any sort of crowding. Just an excuse to get rid of some really convenient spaces. If covid didn't kill the businesses, the lack of parking will.

Hollyhead · 19/09/2020 23:51

The one I don’t get is larger shops closing various exits and entrances thereby forcing more people to use a reduced space and thus making social distancing harder. I’m looking at you John Lewis Solihull.

MamaGothel · 19/09/2020 23:53

AldiAisle Of course that suits people better, but it seems to me that there is a big inequality about who can choose to be careful and who needs to take their chances to make a living.

nancy75 · 19/09/2020 23:54

Hollyhead it’s so they can count how many people go in & out of the shop & not let too many in at once - much easier to do with just a couple of doors

whatarethechances234 · 20/09/2020 00:00

GP surgery doing all flu jabs over several days in one local secondary school - for population of 45000 people - all vulnerable, shielding and elderly people told to make their way there at specified time slot . No direct public transport to the school or parking .

Said this is safest option . As opposed to doing them in GP surgeries ...

It’s bonkers is what it is .

ChristmasCarcass · 20/09/2020 00:02

No tap water at a local restaurant “because of covid” - aye right, and nothing to do with you wanting to charge a fortune for bottled water you greedy bastards.

I agree OP, covid is providing a lot of excuses for people to do stuff they always wanted to do anyway.

MamaGothel · 20/09/2020 07:19

I was also refused a straw at a restaurant because of covid. Didnt understand that one.

Paranoidmarvin · 20/09/2020 07:23

I live near a big out of town Next. They have four escalators. Two at one end of the shop and two the other end of the shop and one lift. Miles away from each other.

Comman sense would say have one end for up and one end for down.

They only kept one lot of escalators at one end going. And made them both going up. And the only way down was using the lift and you were only allowed one person in at a time. Hmm

They also used this for moving stock as well. As u can imagine the queue for the lift was enormous. But they refused to change it round. No idea. Whoever thought that idea up was an idiot.

Lostinsleepybyes · 20/09/2020 07:34

I couldn’t have a napkin at Costa ‘because of Covid’. 🤷‍♀️

Uraflutteringcunt · 20/09/2020 07:37

Well this is sort of true. The air con is the danger here - to be safe it must be switched to a fresh air source rather than be circulatory. Not every premises has changed that, you can tell when you walk in and the air is chilly. Those open fridges in supermarkets are prime vectors for spreading the air droplets as well, this is why so many outbreaks have been in chilled environments. If he’s eating outside and sitting outside at the pub, that is safer.

My daughter was told her hair had to be in a bun for dancing rather than a ponytail to avoid spreading it via flicky hair...

My daughter cant dance in bare feet because of covid.
A work supplier we use are open 10-3 and closed for lunch because covid. (They are normally open 9-4.30 with no lunch break) There are always massive queues and they seem to have most of their staff back.

Freetodowhatiwant · 20/09/2020 07:47

Spain had a ban on floatables in the sea this year. Not just big ones that I could (at a push) see they might think more than one person would play with it, but even small individual ones. My five year old was apprehended by the beach patrol (set up because of Covid) and told he couldn’t use the individual board he was learning to swim with. Two other friends were told they couldn’t use their individual rubber rings.

MilkLady02 · 20/09/2020 07:54

Local arboretum/park/cafe type place, toilets closed, but a row of portaloos there instead... mm, hygienic!

Phrowzunn · 20/09/2020 07:54

My mum who was shielding would only go in her back garden not her front garden. The front garden (though walled off and gated) has pavement running alongside it so people could walk past, so she would only go in back garden which is totally private. We gave her a wee ribbing for it at the time.

Valleydad99 · 20/09/2020 07:56

My boy was banned from using armbands in the pool "because of covid". I assumed I misunderstood at first so asked for a repeat from the centre staff but apparently he could have carried the virus in on the plastic armbands. They didn't answer whether I should shave the children before swimming in future as they could carry it in on their hair. Was a bizarre interaction all told

tastybites · 20/09/2020 08:00

All the mums taking their kids out of school at the beginning "because of Covid" but being the same mums that block the pavement gossiping outside the school now it's reopened, and who have been arranging playdates and birthday parties etc throughout

backinthebox · 20/09/2020 08:03

DC’s bank branch normally closes at 5pm. We went to deposit some money in their accounts and it had shut at 3pm because of Covid. We noticed lots of places in town were closed early too because of Covid. Not sure how a couple of hours off the opening times helps if the same number of customers come in, but in a shorter time span.

OwlinaTree · 20/09/2020 08:05

Toilets closed but portaloos provided in a forestry center near us.

Constant paper cups/wooden cutlery in cafés instead of china. Surely dishwashing would kill any germs? Some places are using plates.
