To ask (lightheartedly) what’s the most bizarre or confusing “because of Covid” you’ve heard?

My next door neighbour has had someone else walk her dog for her since lockdown “because of covid”. Never goes further than her garden. Such a shame because daily walks have never been banned and I’m sure the change of scene would benefit her and her dog would love her to take him!

Just wondered if anyone else has come across bizarre things being done or not done “because of covid?”.

Disclaimer - this is a light hearted thread just to help see the funny side a bit for my own sanity. It’s not meant to be dismissive of people’s genuine experiences or fears.

No seats in the gP surgery (takes you forever to actually to get an appointment and in the door). Poor old chap left waiting barely able to stand hunched over his walking stick. I just sat on the floor!

Decisivelyindecisive · 23/09/2020 14:15

Not "because of" but...

I overheard the Tesco delivery driver telling DH that Covid doesnt exist..its all a government conspiracy. His evidence... because he hasnt had it yet Hmm

Paranoidmarvin · 23/09/2020 14:53

I went to Pizza Hut. U had to order from the app according to the lady on the front due to COVID. The waitress came up to our table and we ordered our drinks. She then bought them over. She then came back to ask how our food was.
But we had to order the food on the phone on a website that didn’t work because that meant she didn’t have to come to the table to take our order.

Apart from the fact that she had come over three times anyway. I was baffled. I’m sure there is a reason I can’t quite figure out what that reason is to be honest

lurker101 · 23/09/2020 14:58

We were out for dinner recently, the whole time we were there it was busy with both dining in and deliveries going out. We over ordered, so requested to take our food home, they said “normally we do, but we can’t because of Covid”. I said I understand (thinking they didn’t want to take the food back to the kitchen after we had eaten it to box up) and requested the boxes to package it myself. They said they would get the manager to explain - he didn’t explain and just said they couldn’t do it because of Covid, I queried why since there were so many takeaways going out and I was going to box it myself. He gave me the boxes with no further explanation, but I was so confused to what reasoning they were using

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 23/09/2020 15:22

@Paranoidmarvin ugh I hated Pizza Hut when we went a few weeks ago - Waitress seats you and tells you to order from an app!

Our waitress brought the food/drinks to another table so you have to walk about and get them!

Rubbish experience, haven’t been back

Funkypolar · 23/09/2020 15:30

I saw my dentist the other day, he wore a face mask and said it was ridiculous that my GP refused to see me.

I have hyperemesis gravidarium. GP won’t see me face to face despite vomiting 10 times a day and vomiting blood. They are only seeing patients for flu jabs.

Ended up in A&E with dehydration because I couldn’t stop vomiting and collapsed. They were very nice, IV fluids etc and said I should have seen my GP much earlier for treatment to prevent me being so unwell. I said my GP wouldn’t see me and they rolled their eyes.

So I can be seen in hospital but not by my GP.

@DreamTheMoors

My elderly neighbour lady sweeps our shared walk 3 or 4 times daily. I was outside the other day and complimented her on keeping them so tidy. “Oh, I do it because of the Coronavirus germs in the dirt.” Hmm
You should tell her your car is covered in corona dirt, maybe she will wash it for you Grin

I was thinking about this thread when I went to the shop, lol

Anyway... this is part of the new 20mph zone, the double width pavement doesn’t run the entire length but the bit on the right that’s about 2m does... you’ll also spot, the lack of pedestrians needing to social distance and the lack of traffic... this was about 5.45pm

I mean... I’m not sure it was necessary at all, nevermind specifically for Covid, lol

We have a lot of entitled people contact my place of work saying things like "other, similar organisation is doing it, why aren't you?" And I have to explain that our situation has slightly different considerations to make us COVID Secure. Size, location, resources (time as well as money), and plain old priorities.

PearsMorgan · 23/09/2020 19:26

Haven’t rtft but our tip is now only accepting black bin and garden waste aka the stuff the bin men pick up anyway.

We’ve kept our pile of old scooters, broken electrical stuff, batteries etc in the garage but others are just fly tipping it

“Not being able to try on shoes in shops.“

Do you really not understand why?

No - because shoes go on your feet. I don't tend to lick shoes or breathe all over them, what with my feet being at the opposite end of my body to my nose. And I'd sanitised my hands twice on entry to the shop.
castieldeansam · 30/09/2020 11:14

The fact toilets in restaurants etc block every other cubicle or sink but still have the hand dryers running, accentuating the movement of the exhaled aerosols potentially carrying the virus and other germs around a, probably, small badly ventilated room. Hand dryers should be replaced by hand towels and a bin.

Camomila · 30/09/2020 11:26

Funkypolar Flowers I had hyperemesis with DS2, it's awful.

All the local restrictions (eg DS1s school, swimming lessons) seem well thought out luckily!

StarCat2020 · 30/09/2020 11:37

Very early on I think before lockdown my sister couldn't get through to her GP surgery. So she popped in and they just had a sign on the desk saying closed due to covid pressures
My GP surgery is locked.

The other day (when I was at the pharmacy next door) an elderly man was treated like shit by a receptionist for daring to knock on the door.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/09/2020 11:48

Campsite at the weekend. Big sign on toilet block only 2 people could enter at once. But you can't see inside it...
Plus inside, two separate rooms, one of shower cubicles, one of toilets. Three shower cubicles available, three toilets available. But technically, if a parent and child were in one shower cubicle, no one else could use the while block.

I'm a rebel. I took both DDs for showers at the same time.

Found that a local council car park was closed "due to the Covid pandemic" for social distancing purposes. Utterly confused.

I think some councils have gone absolutely barmy with joy at all the new rules and signs they can introduce.

Similarly the nearest town turned practically every road into a cycle route "because of Covid". The traffic jams were horrendous! The other week I sat in a jam for ages and saw one cyclist zoom past. Nice idea, perhaps, but no way is Covid going to turn us all into all-weather cyclists.

rosesinmygarden · 30/09/2020 12:24

I'm on a waiting list to see a consultant for something debilitating which could also possibly be cancerous. The cancer chance is small so apparently it's ok for me to wait at least 18 months for an initial appointment. Any treatment would be a further 18 months.

The reason for the long wait is because they are not holding any clinics at all for NHS patients. Not because of them being busy with Covid (Which I'd understand) but because it's not deemed safe enough for clinics to be held.

I paid £200 to go private and saw the same consultant at the same hospital yesterday with a week's notice. No idea why that was safe?!? He told me he's unhappy but nothing he can do.

Two nurses I know tell me they have nothing to do all day at work as it's not safe for patients to come in and have been told to bring a book or watch Netflix.

rosesinmygarden · 30/09/2020 12:25

Just realised... mines not really lighthearted is it Wink

Funkypolar · 30/09/2020 12:27

I have a friend who works in an eye clinic. They are currently seeing 5 patients a day. Everything else is done over the phone. Not sure how you can assess eyes over the phone.

Their backlog is now two years.

JuiceyBetty · 30/09/2020 12:34

Proper laughed at the dominos one!! I noticed half and half was removed from the menu too!

Funkypolar · 30/09/2020 12:35

M&S bakery: “we’ve stopped doing cinnamon swirl pastries because of Covid but you can have a pain au raisin instead.”

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 30/09/2020 12:47

Visiting a crematorium to take flowers, a relative was saddened to see the garden of rest looking very untidy and rubbish blowing about.
When she went in search of them, the staff were on 'light duties' only.
Puzzled, she got a shrug: "More-than-my-job's-worth, Covid-innit".

Funkypolar · 30/09/2020 13:27

There’s a local cafe I go to sometimes but the staff are always pretty rude but they make a really tasty Welsh rarebit.

They aren’t serving hot food “cos Covid.” They were only selling cheese sandwiches “cos Covid.” They used to do egg, ham, tuna etc to take away but now it’s only cheese!

🤷🏻‍♀️

wingsandstrings · 30/09/2020 14:43

I went to a meal out and the pub had blocked off their main toilets and only left one open - the disabled toilet. . . . . . because of COVID. It was a very busy pub, on a Saturday night. Unsurprisingly a queue formed, at one stage there were 8 people in it when I was there. The queue started to block the kitchen entrance so we all had to huddle together to make room for waiters to push past. The whole thing was ridiculous.
