I hate motorway driving!

Country roads? Fine. A roads? No problem. Residential streets? That's me.

Motorways? Oh I hate them, I find them so scary! I'm capable... I wouldn't go on them if I wasn't. I keep on fighting the fear because I don't want to restrict myself... but I hate them, they scare me. The lorries. The wind you feel sometimes when the car sways. Having to speed up when overtaking. My palms always have a thin film of sweat when it's over and I'm always so relieved to see that turn off. I didn't give a flying shite in my 20s but the older I get the more anxious I feel.

Is it just me?! Lighthearted...

I'm the opposite. Motorway driving feels far safer to me than any other roads. No one coming round a bend on the wrong side of the road, no one turning out from a side road.

Cleebope2 · 19/09/2020 22:09

I am exactly 100% the same. I get anxiety on motorways and have to fight really hard to control it and only use them sparingly. When younger they didn’t really bother me. They feel so male dominated and full of testosterone and designed to intimidate!

sst1234 · 19/09/2020 22:10

Motorway driving is the easiest and safest by far. Sometimes you make a whole journey on autopilot and reach the destination without remembering how you got there.

copperoliver · 19/09/2020 22:11

I won't even drive on the motorway, I'd take double the time and go on a roads. If I can't go on a roads then I don't go. X

ReeseWitherfork · 19/09/2020 22:13

Yeah I hate it, it seems half the drivers are only doing 50 and half are doing 250. Haven’t been on a motorway much at all this year so it’ll probably be worse going back.

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 19/09/2020 22:13

It's not my own ability I worry about. I know it sounds stupid but I think what if the car malfunctions and a tyre comes loose or the steering wheel jams or something whilst I'm doing 70mph 🙈 no I do not want to watch Final Destination!

I find motorway driving ok easier generally.

Yes. This. But it can be sooo boring and sleepy. I've got to do a 4 hour motorway next week in a tiny 2 seater and the weather is forecast to be lashing rain. Not looking forward to it, but its better than taking an hour longer by using country roads.
Shitzngiggles · 19/09/2020 22:17

Much prefer motorway driving. Much quicker, no stop start like town driving. Absolutely hate country roads. I always worry what's coming round the next bend. Had a head on smash on a country road. Car in opposite direction came speeding round a bend on my side of the road. Wanker.

Northernsoullover · 19/09/2020 22:17

I'm with you OP, I hate them. I get anxious about my car too. I look after it, service it but its an 06. Something will give one day and I don't want it to be on the M4! I avoid at all costs and if I have to do do long journeys I go by train even if I do baulk at the cost.

The ones doing 50 are the biggest hazard and then look all perplexed and offended when someone overtakes them. These people should not be on motorways.

Mostly agree, I do think they create quite a big chunk of the hazards, especially as there seems to be an increasing amount of them, but those fuckers doing 100+ are terrifying! So many times I’ve sat on the motorway and dreamt of auto pilot cars just so that everyone can go one speed.

BKCRMP · 19/09/2020 22:23

I love motorway driving. Can't stand country roads and passing points and arghhh

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 19/09/2020 22:24

It’s the massive roundabouts I hate. I panic that I’ll get in the wrong lane and get hemmed in by a lorry and be twenty miles down the wrong motorway before I can turn off.

MrsRogerLima · 19/09/2020 22:28

Agree op. You will get so many people coming on saying 'they're the safest roads' blah blah blah.

But they don't feel safe. I can do it and have to regularly for work. But I am with you 100% it's horrible. I hate the speed, I hate the wind, I hate that people cut you up at 100mph left right and centre.

A person overtook me at 70mph the other day only to cut infront of me off into the exit we were going past. There was plenty of space behind me so, why?

My life actually flashed before my eyes.

ColouringPencils · 19/09/2020 22:29

Oh I am the same, OP. I will happily take an hour longer to go on A roads. My car feels so small and helpless out there amongst the lorries and 4x4s. Hate the side wind and slip roads give me the fear. The more I put it off, the worse it gets, so I know it is not helping, but I just don't want to do it!

They exist.

I own one.

My 50mile commute on the m62 every day is lovely. Autopilot engage, Spotify on. Chillax.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/09/2020 22:30

Zoom zoom! I love a motorway. I hate the slow sods - very dangerous, ruin the the speed differential for entering from a slip road and they get themselves blocked in by lorries, panic, then try to change lane without looking or indicating.

Arthersleep · 19/09/2020 22:33

I'm with you on this! They make me feel all panicky as I can't just pull over if i need too. There's also insufficient distractions, unlike city driving, so my mind has time to get creative and conjure up all sorts of catestrophic images as I drive along.

MrsRogerLima · 19/09/2020 22:35

To be clear I was going at 70 in the outside lane so they were obviously speeding to be able to overtake and then cut me up.
sst1234 · 19/09/2020 22:36

I honestly think that occasional drivers do not get motorway etiquette. Everyone needs to use them but it’s torture for commuters to see people doing 70 in the fast lane - it’s for overtaking. Or refusing to give up the middle lane.

Me too. Motorway driving’s the easiest.
1Morewineplease · 19/09/2020 22:41

I haven't driven on the motorway for at least ten maybe fifteen years.
Can't cope with them. I feel like I need to veer towards a crash barrier , even though I'm on the inside lane.
Hate being on motorways when my husband is driving too.

I approached a respected driving school about this, thinking that motorway confidence driving skills would help, only to be told, after questioning , that I'd be too dangerous for their staff.

It sucks as I live 200 miles away from my frail mum.
Yes, I've had CBT but it wasn't very helpful. I just got told to do it and pull my socks up as everyone else can manage it!

Crocciesnap · 19/09/2020 22:41

@sst1234 do you mean lane hogging or just doing 70? You can't go faster without breaking the law. You shouldn't be overtaking faster than that!

MrsRogerLima · 19/09/2020 22:42

It's not a fucking fast lane. 70mph is the maximum speed limit. This means you cannot go faster than this on the motorway. No later what lane your in.

Your part of the problem.
