I hate motorway driving!

Country roads? Fine. A roads? No problem. Residential streets? That's me.

Motorways? Oh I hate them, I find them so scary! I'm capable... I wouldn't go on them if I wasn't. I keep on fighting the fear because I don't want to restrict myself... but I hate them, they scare me. The lorries. The wind you feel sometimes when the car sways. Having to speed up when overtaking. My palms always have a thin film of sweat when it's over and I'm always so relieved to see that turn off. I didn't give a flying shite in my 20s but the older I get the more anxious I feel.

Is it just me?! Lighthearted...

I agree about middle lane hoggers though. They are also dangerous. If you do this you are making yourself into a dangerous obstacle that could cause a serious accident.

sst1234 · 19/09/2020 22:46

@MrsRogerLima I take it you don’t do much motorway driving. Just as well too.

wigglerose · 19/09/2020 22:48

I prefer motorway driving. Everyone going roughly the same speed and same direction. Even if it's unfamiliar... it's so easy.

Country roads have maniacs that drive far too fast like they're the only person in the county.

Town and city roads are full of chancers, distractions, even worse if it's unfamiliar.Town and city roads are a lot more dangerous. You're more likely to hit something (brick wall, lamppost, parked car, person) if things do go wrong but motorways you just roll or slide.

If you had rtft you would see that I do, regularly.

You on the other hand I assume haven't yet passed your test? As you don't seem to understand the rules of the road.

sst1234 · 19/09/2020 22:55

@MrsRogerLima calm down dear, you’ll get heartburn

MrsRogerLima · 19/09/2020 22:58
Hmm
Tattoocrazymum · 19/09/2020 22:59

I enjoy motorway driving (except joining the motorwat when its busy, that makes me nervous) but when im on i love it, straight roads, over taking easy.
I hate big roundabouts though, especially now i work in a small city and driving to patients homes

Veterinari · 19/09/2020 23:02
@sst1234 do you mean lane hogging or just doing 70? You can't go faster without breaking the law. You shouldn't be overtaking faster than that!
If you aren't overtaking you're lane hogging regardless of the speed you use. You should always be in the left hand lane unless you're overtaking or the lane signs indicate otherwise e.g. preparing for a junction.

Sooperdooper19 · 19/09/2020 23:06

I totally get it! I have only recently had to drive on motorways regularly (2 years) to get to work. Spend the whole time gripping the steering wheel thinking any small mistake by another driver (or me) will result in my untimely death. Quite happily pootled round the M25 in my twenties though! I keep thinking it will get easier....

emptyshelvesagain · 19/09/2020 23:09

To be clear I was going at 70 in the outside lane so they were obviously speeding to be able to overtake and then cut me up.

If you were in the outside lane how on earth did anyone overtake you? Did they drive along the central reservation Confused

InkInTheBottle · 19/09/2020 23:13

I’m the opposite, I much prefer motorway driving. Dropped son at uni today - M6, M6 toll, M42, M40, M25 - about 3.5 hours to get there. No delays, everyone going in the same direction, no roundabouts, only the occasional nutter, much easier than A roads and my nightmare - country roads.

Quarterback11 · 19/09/2020 23:17

You are not the only one, OP!

I know in theory they are safer...it's the heavy, fast moving traffic that terrifies me.

I have been in a few accidents when someone drove into me. No accidents on motorways, but motorways trigger me ever since.

TBHno · 19/09/2020 23:21

I don't mind the motorway itself, but I hate getting onto them via slip roads! Slip roads absolutely terrify me Sad

maybelaterdear · 19/09/2020 23:26

I'm terrified of motorways.Feel like I have no control of my car as everything is so fast.Find it really difficult joining a motorway.
To be honest, every time I drove on one my aim was to make it home alive!!
I avoid them now & rely on my husband or mother.Quite embarrassed about this.

NannyR · 19/09/2020 23:29

I'm the opposite - I like driving on motorways, don't mind city traffic but absolutely hate country lanes with a vengeance.

yikesanotherbooboo · 19/09/2020 23:29

Me too OP. I dread motorway journeys but have no qualms about other driving.

GachaBread · 19/09/2020 23:37

If it wasn't for the Pandemic I would not have conquered my fear of driving on the motorways. I would never have drove on them, would have took the train if I needed to go anywhere far out.
I am not a scaredy cat any more and just recently drove from Birmingham to Devon and back again majority of that in the fast lane.
The slip roads still give me the frighteners when joining but I'm hoping that fear will fade away the more motorway driving I do.

TheHighestSardine · 19/09/2020 23:40

I like motorways. I used to do about a thousand miles a week, but covid.

I'd suggest anyone who doesn't due to the speed and uncertainty of other traffic would probably feel more comfortable noodling along at about 58 in the first lane, keeping in speed sync with the lorries. I do that on occasion, it's very relaxing.

cyclingmad · 19/09/2020 23:44

Its not scary if you use it properly but kost people don't. You got those driving way under the speed limit and sitting in the middle lane forcing people into the overtaking lame unnecessarily.

Its as though peolle are scared to switch lanes. You go from first lane to overtake a lorry and once done unless there is another car you need to overtake move the feck over until you need to overtake again.

Its not hard.

As for breaking down why stress about that unless you don't have breakdown cover

And if your worried about what do you do if tyre blows out go do ab advanced driving course so you know what to do in different situations.

HeddaGarbled · 19/09/2020 23:53

You don’t have to overtake if you don’t want to. You can just toddle along at 50 in the inside lane with the lorries.

thecatsabsentcojones · 19/09/2020 23:58

I like the regimented nature of motorways but absolutely hate traffic jams and not being able to get off. If I could be guaranteed a traffic jam free journey I’d be fine!

cyclingmad · 20/09/2020 00:02

@HeddaGarbled except they dont tootle along at 50 in the first lane they do it in the middle lane cos they don't want to be stuck with a lorry infront of them

ladybird69 · 20/09/2020 00:06

Was scared stiff of motorway driving and avoided it for 25 years. One divorce later I couldn’t avoid it. I found a fantastic driving instructor for nervous drivers. One lesson with him and him explaining exactly how the motorway works and showing me and now I can drive anywhere. Up yours to my ex who made me so dependent on him!
Motorways aren’t the big bad monsters that we imagine. Go for it Op.

Kolsch · 20/09/2020 00:07

I love it, especially alone when I can ramp the volume of my music up and just go.
I love it even more in my home country where I can really put my foot down.
I don't mind driving on any road really.

Pobblebonk · 20/09/2020 00:18

I find it easier, mainly because you don't have to worry about junctions. My only concern is that, because it's so easy, I worry I could nod off. I therefore have music on very loud and loads of ventilation.
