This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

I wonder how the Tories generally would react to any other twice married, father of 6/7, complaining that they’d given up opportunities to do their dream job, but didn’t think it paid enough...

They certainly wouldn’t see fit to raise UC. In fact they’d likely sanction him for taking a lower paid job in the first place

Wealth buys choices. He’s made his choices. If he doesn’t like it he can resign and get a better paid job

derxa · 20/09/2020 04:37

I want a prime minister who does the job out of a sense of public duty. Not for the dosh. Would you do it?

justfinefornow · 20/09/2020 05:25

I think complaining that your salary isn’t sufficient is a bit rich coming from a Tory - the party that wanted people to take responsibility for family planning - only have the kids if you can afford them! Also it’s not that it’s a secret - the salary is not the main attraction - it’s power, influence and the ability to sell yourself out at an obscene rate when you leave office.
I think of bigger concern is MPs not getting paid enough and doing quite a few side jobs to supplement their income - I think that should be stopped.
Our MP is bloody useless and I’m sure his part time jobs don’t help - his side hustles are currently making him £81k extra a year on top of his MPs salary. How does he find the time? He’s allowed to claim office support - someone else answers our emails freeing up time for him to earn more money elsewhere!

Shiverywinterbottom · 20/09/2020 05:34

He’s welcome to quit and get himself a higher paid job......

I’m sure there are plenty who could do a far superior job of running the country. Maybe he shouldn’t have had more kids than he can afford......

SmokeMirrors · 20/09/2020 05:43

But he can only afford a nanny and not a housekeeper, and, and, the government won't pay for food when they have people over for dinner.

Poor Boris it must be hell.

lyralalala · 20/09/2020 05:59

Also, given that he has Downing St and Chequers, he could stick one of his three owned homes on AirBnB if things get really tight...

shotby3armedbastards · 20/09/2020 06:17

@TheVamoosh

Boris is rich. He hardly relies on his salary, does he? This is some kind of strategy to make him seem relatable.
This with bells on! Mr Johnson is from a 'money' family. There will be trust funds, grubby pots squirrelled away by innovative accountants, properties, stocks and shares, investments etc etc etc. Nothing hits the press about this PM without a reason, not the reason we are reading about, there's always another agenda at play, some smoke and mirrors with Cummings in the background. Any decent fully functioning PM would have more dignity than to have such rubbish printed about them (even if they were finding the salary hard to manage on). I don't actually think it is enough for the job generally but the current encumbrance in post doesn't deserve even that. Lest face it he's part time at best and at worst he's job sharing with the above named unelected advisor. If MP's salaries were very low it would become the job of the rich only. There are many examples of MP's from ordinary backgrounds who would have no chance of being able to take on the roll without a reasonable salary to support themselves and their family on. Unless you are a London or Home Counties MP the time away from home means their is often another parent having to run the show at home. There are some fantastic MP's, there are some terrible ones and a lot of mediocre in between. Mine is a terrible one and he is also still working in another job at the same time so can't be doing either effectively. He's not doing it because he is skint though, he's doing it because he is a narcissistic dick!
KetoPenguin · 20/09/2020 06:21

No pay by performance! He owes the country £10M at least on that scale.

shotby3armedbastards · 20/09/2020 06:23

@lyralalala

Boris doesn’t get taxed on Downing St as a benefit in kind here, but given his American citizenship and tax issues there it’s possible the Americans do see it as benefit in kind and taxable

If so that’s his own fault for being lax with his tax affairs until now and not knowing

He relinquished his US citizenship when they started chasing him for tax so he doesn't even have that as ana excuse.
larrygrylls · 20/09/2020 06:28

It is pocket money. He has virtually zero personal expenses when in office.

And when they leave office PMs walk into jobs that pay millions for a few days of work a month.

If they stopped the way in which PMs pass friendly legislation to bankers et al and then get paid the moment they leave Downing Street, I would be open to a pay increase.

In the interim I think he can struggle on with his 8k per month Ish post tax pocket money.

Tellmetruth4 · 20/09/2020 06:32

He’s aware that the perks of being a PM kick in the minute you become an ex-PM. He is guaranteed to make millions on the speaking circuit, sitting on boards of companies he’s given favours to during his regime, book deals etc.

There are at least 64 million other people living in the U.K. who you should worry about before Johnson. He will be more than fine.

KetoPenguin · 20/09/2020 06:35

Think how much he will make for his autobiography Lockdown PM, the Boris diaries.

girlcrushonvillanelle · 20/09/2020 06:50

I've wondered if the pay was more that the job may attract a better calibre of applicant.

There must be better people out there who can run big multi national businesses well?

Politicians are a shower of shite!!

longwayoff · 20/09/2020 06:50

What? Neither Downing St nor Chequers has a housekeeper? Are we expected to believe that Bozo does his own dusting, housekeeping, food ordering? Has he got a French maid's outfit? BS, BS and BS.

Wanderings · 20/09/2020 07:03

No fucking way. The PM should be paid LESS, and I agree with those who think MPs should be paid less too, that it should be about truly wanting to make the country better, rather than money; and I think there should be five years mandatory work in a “proper”, customer-facing job before going anywhere near parliament, so we don’t keep having Eton/Oxbridge/isolation from real world prime ministers. And they should get some proper consequences when they mess things up, like people in real jobs do. As for mass-murdering Tony Bliar, beheading would be too good for him.

Indoctro · 20/09/2020 07:04

Wow I'm shocked I thought it would be about a million pounds Confused

That's a very low salary for what his job is I think personally

He would get more than that working in the oil industry .

notdaddycool · 20/09/2020 07:09

I read the other day the flat at 10 Downing Street is taxable, any food sent up from the kitchen is charged. If people visit him at chequers and stats he is charged. It definitely is charged. As for the it should be 30-40k comments you’ll increase the number of people with inherited wealth or second jobs, neither of which is desirable.

Porridgeoat · 20/09/2020 07:15

I think it’s fine particularly in light of free accommodation and other perks while leader and when he’s stopped being leader. Long term he will also make millions from memoirs and speeches.

Also other roles are far more deserving of an increase. People in the caring profession and nurses for a start.

Porridgeoat · 20/09/2020 07:18

I hope the security fo all the cleaning 😂

Binkybix · 20/09/2020 07:18

Putting aside the particular PM we have today, I think they should get more.

Lots of jobs in banking etc (not even very senior) get paid more than that. Not suggesting exact benchmarking, but it is a hell of a job.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 20/09/2020 07:23

@Graphista

Another amount of money to consider...

£342.72 per month!

That’s £4112.64 a YEAR

That’s how much a single claimant on UC gets!

That’s around (I think) 36 TIMES LESS than Johnson gets!
What does the single claimant do to get paid that amount in UC?

I think £150k per year for the role of Prime Minister is ridiculously inadequate. As a PP said, a HT of a secondary school can be on £120k.

Compare it to the role of a senior management of major companies and you can see how the salary for the role is extremely low for the responsibilities involved.

Jazzybeats · 20/09/2020 07:26

No. Perks of being PM significantly outweigh base salary.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 20/09/2020 07:27

He comes from a VERY wealthy and privileged family, has lead a VERY wealthy and privileged adult life and has fingers in many pies! Carrie for that matter is hardly taking bottles to the corner shop for pennies either!!
You seem to think you know a lot.

What pies does he have his fingers in?
What is Carrie's income?

Toontown · 20/09/2020 07:36

Once he is fired or resigns (for incompetence) he will be able to do short dinner speech's at about about 60k a speech. He was already on £30k a speech before.

Blair is worth millions now. And he was a cunt as well.

itsgettingweird · 20/09/2020 07:36

@gluteustothemaximus

150k is incredibly low for what he does.

What does he do? Grin

🤣🤣
