This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

No I think it’s fine and he knew the salary before fighting hard to get the job. Far more important things to worry about at the moment.

derxa · 20/09/2020 07:45

He comes from a VERY wealthy and privileged family I don't think they were particularly wealthy at all.

Pobblebonk · 20/09/2020 07:51

I think £150k per year for the role of Prime Minister is ridiculously inadequate. As a PP said, a HT of a secondary school can be on £120k.

But HTs of secondary schools don't get to live in a flat in central London plus a country mansion. Nor do they stand to earn a fortune when they retire from directorships, after dinner speaking, writing memoirs etc.

Plus, in Boris's case, there is bound to be a quid pro quo sorted out for all those mates currently receiving incredibly lucrative covid and Brexit-related contracts without any proper scrutiny or tendering processes.

@HoneysuckIejasmine

Being prime minister should not be something you do for the money.
Being prime minister should not be something you do for the money. I want people who are motivated by making a difference and serving their country.

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys which is exactly why the politicians in this country are all members of an old boys club. No-one else with the sufficient experience would want to take on such a high risk/responsibility role for a low amount.

It's all well and good not to be motivated by money, but you must be compensated well enough or when the times get really rough, there's no incentive to continue. Especially in what is essentially a really thankless job.

What's funny is it seems that most of the highest earners agree with the PM needing a payrise which I find quite interesting.

itsgettingweird · 20/09/2020 07:55

Boris has had plenty of penis wipers in his life 🤣🤣🤣

Now he's struggling to afford to pay for most of them Wink

derxa · 20/09/2020 07:55

One interesting thing I found out when looking up other leaders' salaries was that Donald Trump gives his to charity.

Banyantree1990 · 20/09/2020 07:59

Free housing and hols, no food bills, no bills of any kind including all travel, parliamentary expenses and a life ahead of you of Directorships and speech making at £100k a pop after you’ve done your 4/5 years at £150k?
I think PMs can probably manage on that given that they generally come from wealthy backgrounds or well paid careers.

Stinkyguineapig · 20/09/2020 08:00

I'm not a BJ fan by any stretch of the imagination but I'm slightly Confused about people suggesting wages of 30 or 40k for the responsibility of leading a country - making decisions about covid etc, dealing with terrorism, and in some cases, deciding whether to go to war.
I wasnt particularly a fan of Teresa May and thought she must have had a shit year having to deal with the terror attacks and Grenfell tower tragedy, but she probably feels she had a lucky escape compared to this year!

InMySpareTime · 20/09/2020 08:02

Maybe he'll make childcare a tax deductible expense now he has personal interest in it.

It’s not funny at all. High earners are motivated by money so it’s entirely logical they should think that. They (mistakenly) believe the more you pay, the better the performance. I don’t want politicians who worship money.

You didn't realise that?

He made a really big deal of that.

This is an interesting image. Trudea and Merkel do well.

‘One interesting thing I found out when looking up other leaders' salaries was that Donald Trump gives his to charity.’

Which one? He’s set up charities in his name before. I wouldn’t put it past him to ensure the money comes straight back to him and in any case the tax cuts cuts he gives to the rich probably mean he’s saved more than his salary would’ve been anyway. In addition he constantly expenses the state for his golfing trips to his own resorts. The guys a champion grifter that’s for sure!

Let me assure you I am by no means a high earner.

I work in a job where people are attracted more by the role than the money.

Back in 'the old days' MPs didn't get paid. So that excluded a lot of people and attracted people with money.

TBF - he has donated his salary to charity. But yes, he does have a lot of income and money from other sources.

@chomalungma

This really isn’t the top job in the country

What job do you think is the top job then?

Head of MI5 Head of MI6 Head of GCHQ CEO of the NHS

Probably one of his own, set up for tax avoidance purposes.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 20/09/2020 08:18

Graphista, nails and heads etc.

MPs (and members of the House of Lords) should need to declare vested interests which could restrict voting rights should it be deemed said MP stood to gain personally from influencing a vote in a particular way (by casting a vote, for instance). Please tell me this is happening in some way!?

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 20/09/2020 08:22

ItsGettingWeird, whoa, they're women who definitely do not deserve to be referred to as Boris' 'penis wipers'. Sorry to be po-faced about it.

MoistMolly · 20/09/2020 08:29

Why is being a PM high risk? Who suffers the fallout if the PM makes a mistake?

Tellmetruth4 · 20/09/2020 08:31

Apparently Trump often brags about not taking a salary’s His golfing trips which are paid for by the state to the Trump organisation. has cost the American taxpayer $134million and counting according to the article below.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5e4712b9c5b64d860fcab86c/amp

Forbes estimates the Trump organisation may be given as much as $340 million on expenses claims from the state by the time his current term is up. Personally I’d prefer it if he just took his salary and stopped getting taxpayers to pay his company for him to golf. It would be far better value for money.

thatone · 20/09/2020 08:34

No Boris should not be paid more. He is attempting (and succedding) to change the country away from at least trying to be meritocratic and is rewarding his own sycophants supporters (eg Dido Harding) not on the basis of skills or knowledge. He is already plundering the country and leading us towards much worse outcomes than are necessary.

Darker · 20/09/2020 08:38

I can’t comment on the PMs salary but I think MPs should be barred from doing other jobs while in post. Its a full time role.

I’m fine with the nice houses. It must be easier and cheaper for the security services to protect them there and also easier to track who has access to the PM.

rainkeepsfallingdown · 20/09/2020 08:39

I'd be prepared to pay more in exchange for basic qualifications and relevant experience, a series of gruelling assessment centre type tests, panel interviews and so on. As it stands, any idiot can become PM.

If it was a real job, where you were assessed on your competence before being able to take it up, sure.

Unfortunately, under my system, Boris wouldn't have been hired in the first place, let alone eligible for a pay rise.

crystaltips98 · 20/09/2020 08:44

Er, no! The PM is a civil servant. The perk of the job is power serving your country plus a generous if not overly zealous wage.
