This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

The problem we have really is career politicians, in other countries parliament is made up with people who have had huge success in industry etc and have earned their money already, they also bring a wealth of knowledge and experience.
I actually thought he earned less than that, I remember back in the nineties finding out Cherie Blair massively out earned Tony

Stinkyguineapig · 19/09/2020 22:41

Macron even had a penis wiper!! To protect him from covid.
😂😂😂😂😂

Witsend101 · 19/09/2020 22:42

Lucky for him the salary isn't performance related because he'd be getting sweet FA if it was

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/09/2020 22:42

A penis wiper, I’m saying nothing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

InkInTheBottle · 19/09/2020 22:44

Yanbu, I think it’s a very poor salary for the country’s PM. Obviously, everyone on here can’t see beyond Boris at the moment.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/09/2020 22:45

Oh great!!!That’s my night sleep snookered, now. Thanks to worrying about Boris Johnson.

tobee · 19/09/2020 22:47

I want a prime minister who does the job out of a sense of public duty. Not for the dosh.

When I read that he's supposedly having a miserable time as PM, I could only say "good" several times. I feel miserable having him and his appalling, incompetent, nasty cronies ruining the country. It's only fair.

tobee · 19/09/2020 22:49

@CherryPavlova

You do realise the £150k is the icing on the cake? They get a base salary of £150 plus a lovely London flat, a country pile, free luxury transport wherever they go, free food, caterers, security, free holidays, a clothes allowance plus a guaranteed income for life from various directorships, books and talks.

Most are multi millionaires when they take up post.

According to what I read they have to pay for meals from the Downing Street kitchen. However, he should cook his own food in the flat instead.

Port1aCastis · 19/09/2020 22:50

If he was paid per hour he'd be skint, but however much his salary is he still cannot buy morals health or decency.

VickySunshine · 19/09/2020 22:50

He gets paid about half of what other government heads do.

sst1234 · 19/09/2020 22:54

The salary is token gesture for the PM, deliberately paid that way, because they need to make it look like high office is a service. That said, it’s totally unfair to assume that being PM must be a walk in the park. The responsibility, political maneuvering, compromises and deals must come with a great deal of personal sacrifice.

PinkiOcelot · 19/09/2020 22:56

My heart bleeds. He should try living on NMW and see how he gets on.

lancaster · 19/09/2020 22:57

I agree, pay should be increased to reflect responsibility.

CherryPavlova · 19/09/2020 23:00

No, they don’t pay for meals taken as part of their work - neither do their partners. Most meals are part of work.

Net worth estimated st 3.7 million.

That was obviously a load of old tosh in the article then. Not too surprising

SunbathingDragon · 19/09/2020 23:09

Being a PM is usually a springboard to being paid very well in subsequent venues.

Whilst I think there are more important jobs in the country, the fact that some footballers are paid more per week than our PM is a year doesn’t feel right. I know many ardent fans will say that football is much more important but it really isn’t, especially not in the middle of a pandemic (and yes Brexit, but the Tories allowed the vote so can deal with the fallout).

movingonup20 · 19/09/2020 23:15

£150 k is a lot, 10x what i earn. Those who choose to overpopulate the planet I have no sympathy for. I have two kids at university, they have loans and their dad pays the rest

1Morewineplease · 19/09/2020 23:19

The PM doesn't pay rent or utilities at No10 or at Chequers. He could rent his central London pile for squillions a month too.
His expenses are dealt with and at Commons he'll want for nothing.
Most of what he dies will be charged to the taxpayer as 'expenses' even to the point of the infamous duck pond!

He can flip flop his private/public residence, like so many MPs so that he can claim for any decorating/modifications so that the taxpayer will fund it.

I think that the PM is probably laughing all the way to the bank!

ilovesooty · 19/09/2020 23:19

@lioncitygirl

150k is incredibly low for what he does.
No, it's possibly low for what he ought to be doing.
LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/09/2020 23:23

@Felifox after a google, looks like they reached a settlement earlier in the year. Maybe it's the superinjunction that's draining the coffers....

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/09/2020 23:24

If only it had been common knowledge what the salary was when he applied for the job...

Gladysthesphinx · 19/09/2020 23:25

Well, his occupancy of Downing Street is taxed as a benefit I believe. So he is paying for it. Plus has to pay if he uses Chequers, apparently, and for food.

Still: no sympathy. He knew the salary when he applied for the job. Being able to afford a nanny is not a human right. This is why it’s a good idea to think before you impregnate. I couldn’t afford that many children! That’s not my employer’a fault.

Lollypop701 · 19/09/2020 23:25

Don’t forget that we pretty much pay prime ministers for life.... they can claim up to 115,000 pa ... and most do, Boris will be costing us for a long time

lakesidefall · 19/09/2020 23:28

I think MP's are all underpaid the PM included.

That said my sympathy is very limited for any conservative who is poor because they keep on having dc with different women.
They have no sympathy for anyone else who has more dc than they can afford to keep.

Ideasplease322 · 19/09/2020 23:31

It is low when compared to other very senior public sector jobs. For example vice chancellors of universities can earn £500k or more.

I remember an article saying the head of network rail earns £750k.
