This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

So should all the public service workers, but he doesn’t consider them so no.

winterisstillcoming · 19/09/2020 21:49

His salary is a moot point, as others have pointed out, the other benefits far exceed the salary.

I do wonder how it works though, eg. Performance review etc. I'd love to see the actual contract of employment, or equivalent.

CherryPavlova · 19/09/2020 21:49

@Rhayader

He doesn’t live rent free though. It’s a 3 bedroom flat in Westminster which would cost about 3500 a month to rent. He’s receiving it as a benefit in kind so he will have to pay the pay on it as if it was salary... which means it’s as if he is on 113k before tax (£6000 a month after tax).

The PMs salary over the decades has not risen with inflation/cost of living. Pre-war the PM was on an equivalent salary of half a mil today.

IMHO being an MP (and by extension the pm) should be something that the best and brightest people aspire to do, not just something that only rich people can afford to do. We should pay them more.

It’s not taxable either in Downing Street or Chequers. A requirement of the job to live there. Tax free.

As a good Tory, he’ll have been prudent enough to save while he was earning well, no?

Lazy, sexually incontinent fool probably pissed most of it up against the wall (and hoovered a load of it up his nose).

pineapplepalmtree · 19/09/2020 21:52

There are SO many jobs paying more than that, I would need a significant amount more to ever think it was worth stress of being pm.

TinkersTailor · 19/09/2020 21:54

Aw is he struggling for money? Bless him.
Karma's an absolute cunt isn't it?

Arthersleep · 19/09/2020 22:09

Possibly, if it meant attracting better candidates!

0gfhty · 19/09/2020 22:13

Anyone is deluded in thinking this is all he lives off

sst1234 · 19/09/2020 22:13

A PM’s earning power takes off after they leave office. That’s when they hit the big leagues. Time in office gives them what money can’t buy. Power and access.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 19/09/2020 22:18

He can have an extra £50k every time he and his government implement something that has a measurably positive effect on the country, e.g get the Trussell Trust to only give out 1million food parcels a year (as apposed to the 2million last year) or similar. But conversely he loses ten grand every time he tells a lie he’s then caught out on. Sounds fair to me.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 19/09/2020 22:23

But surely he gets long holidays when Parliament isn’t sitting or has been illegally prorogued ? In fact he barely shows up when Parliament is sitting. How many PMs questions has he actually done in 14 months? Has he even managed a dozen?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/09/2020 22:23

You’re wanting us to take pity on highly wealthy man because he’s only on 150k PA which works out at around 3K PW. Meanwhile there are people hungry homeless and suicidal due to extreme financial difficulties. You’ve got to be taking the piss, surely.

HollowTalk · 19/09/2020 22:24

When he was kicked out of the spectator, he did say that the £250,000 per year there was chickenfeed

Bulblasagne · 19/09/2020 22:25

Not read thread, but I was shocked when I read potus medical team on hand, always bags of potus blood, always a and e ready.

Our pm didn't even get doc visit? When he had covid? I found that pretty shocking.
Macron even had a penis wiper!! To protect him from covid.
Not sure about the salary.
But definitely more back up, provison... Maybe even larger house?

Bulblasagne · 19/09/2020 22:26
  • pen wiper!! Grin
KeepingPlain · 19/09/2020 22:29

I feel no sympathy. Hope he's suffering, the insufferable condescending stupid bastard that he is. Hope he suffers more in future for what he's done.

Lemonylemony · 19/09/2020 22:32

Best autocorrect ever @Bulblasagne

HoneysuckIejasmine · 19/09/2020 22:33

Being prime minister should not be something you do for the money.

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 19/09/2020 22:34

No way, he is a fucking shit show

UntamedShrew · 19/09/2020 22:37

Anyone else finding it quite fishy that the Times also has an article on the same day about ‘poor Boris’ and how poorly paid he is? Dom must have made a couple of calls 🙄

I agree it’s low for that level of seniority in many sectors but look how much they get for book deals etc afterwards. And it was ok for his predecessors, I don’t recall any of them moaning to multiple journalists about it.

VinylDetective · 19/09/2020 22:37

Penis wiper 🤣🤣🤣 Bet Boris would love that but I pity the poor bugger who got the job.

UntamedShrew · 19/09/2020 22:37

LOL at penis wiper Grin

TheDuchessofMalfy · 19/09/2020 22:38

It’s plenty of money for anyone.

Even if the prime minster wasn’t independently wealthy as most of them seem to be these days, and was actually living off that salary, it would be fine. It not so low that it would mean someone with no other means couldn’t stand to be prime minister. Not like the days when MPs weren’t paid for instance.

Stinkyguineapig · 19/09/2020 22:39

Regardless whether its BJ and however many kids he has I do think 150k is low for the responsibility compared to other high profile salaries. I'm pretty sure the CEO of Govia and some CEOs of major banks earn 7 figure salaries
However as PP have said they can cash in after they resign/stop being PM and write books and do after dinner speeches.

TheDuchessofMalfy · 19/09/2020 22:40

Also, isn’t the Tory mantra “don’t have more children than you can afford “?
