This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

Sounds like Marina is taking him to the cleaners.

I do hope so.

My heart bleeds...Hmm

Leaannb · 19/09/2020 20:59

to be a husband, to this particular wife
They’re not married are they?

Witchend · 19/09/2020 21:00

Hi Boris, nice to see you on MN.
I was beginning to wonder if you were on 50% furlough.

Hellomoonstar · 19/09/2020 21:00

No, I rather that money went to key workers or saved to spend on the nightingale hospitals. Boris don’t need anymore money. If Boris gets any pay rise then they need to reinstate tax credits and giving hard done by parents money to feed their third child. So many people will now lose their jobs and struggle to feed their families.

Jolly good show! I'm assuming you're not quite as inept in your role? (Or hoping).

JamieLeeCurtains · 19/09/2020 21:01

People, which would include Prime Ministers, shouldn't have children they can't afford.

Isn't that the Tory mantra of our age?

VinylDetective · 19/09/2020 21:01

@Lilybet1980

Plenty of jobs have way more responsibility that get less pay

Interested to hear your views on what they are @Gobbycop

There’s a reason why for a long time politics has mainly attracted people who are already wealthy.

A junior doctor on a night shift for a kick off.
HandfulofDust · 19/09/2020 21:01

Even a deeply unpopular prime minister is financially made up for life. After retiring they'll be paid thousands an hour for talking at events etc.

Travis1 · 19/09/2020 21:01

🤣🤣🤣🤣 thanks op i needed a laugh tonight 👍🏻

Sorry, I can't keep up with his marital status, and progeny. Apparently I'm not the only one, in my defence. . .
Swooningmonkey · 19/09/2020 21:02

Nope. Mp’s get a healthy expenses to top up their basic wage. Besides most of them have previously worked in the city and or have consultancy side gigs, family companies.

Lilybet1980 · 19/09/2020 21:02

IMHO being an MP (and by extension the pm) should be something that the best and brightest people aspire to do, not just something that only rich people can afford to do. We should pay them more.

Absolutely this @Rhayader. I’d earn about 1/4 of what I earn now as an MP. Why would I do that unless I have other sources of income?

Sparklesocks · 19/09/2020 21:03

Shall we do a crowdfunder for him? Wink

As a general rule it’s a good idea to weigh up if you can live on the salary of a new job. Not sure why he didn’t do the maths before now?

Bigsighall · 19/09/2020 21:03

I wouldn’t do it for that money. Maybe if we paid more then we might get someone better? It’s what generally happens in industry. I work with lots of IT people who are not far off that salary, do a nice 9-5 with none of that pressure.

Lilybet1980 · 19/09/2020 21:03

But that’s the problem. There’s a reason being an MP attracts people with family money!
mbosnz · 19/09/2020 21:05

Isn't it interesting how every other previous PM has managed?

Why can't this one?

I guess dear old Dad didn't teach money management - along with birth control, and a work ethic?

Lilybet1980 · 19/09/2020 21:05

@VinylDetective I disagree (and so does most of the country given they seem to hold him responsible for 40,000 plus deaths).

VinylDetective · 19/09/2020 21:06

You’re assuming everyone’s motivated by money. I don’t want people who are running the country. I want people who are motivated by making a difference and serving their country.

Cattenberg · 19/09/2020 21:08

And in relation to this prime minister in particular, if he can earn £250k a year as a newspaper columnist alone

Didn’t he describe that £250k as “chicken feed”?

mediumperiperi · 19/09/2020 21:11

£150k is not a lot for that level of responsibility but once he's left office he'll be making a shit tonne more so a short-term pay cut is fine imo.

Lemonylemony · 19/09/2020 21:11

Honestly, and I’m not meaning this as a personal dig - you do you - but I’m not sure I want my MPs to be people who would prioritise being very rich over following a calling to serve their community, to be honest. They still earn a very high wage in comparison to the average of their constituents.
