to think that this woman was very selfish

This morning at the petrol station she was in the shop with her husband, they walked round several of the aisles without buying anything and then she went with him to pay for the petrol, he was wearing a mask and she didn't. He paid for the petrol and they didn't buy anything else.

She should have waited in the car, there was no reason for them both to be in the shop Angry

I'd assume that she couldn't wear a mask but had to go into the shop as driving off without paying for petrol is not acceptable

So why not just assume that she had a reason to be in there, and get over it already then 🤷‍♀️

Havaiana · 19/09/2020 20:43

Oh FFS maybe she was looking around in case there was something she wanted to eat.

I would stake my very last pound that YOU, OP have not worn a mask when you should have. You won't be honest here but be honest with yourself.

I can honestly say I have never been in a shop without a mask since it's been a requirement. I haven't been anywhere else where one is needed.

@littlemsattitude I don't believe you for a second. Be honest.

stretchedmarks · 19/09/2020 20:46

I am absolutely sick to the back teeth of all this bloody whining. I know it's been said before, but it really is no wonder the bloody Stasi was as effective as it was. People absolutely love to feel superior and tell tales. At least it's to Mumsnet this time... but still.

Give. Over.

SisterAgatha · 19/09/2020 20:47

I feel this way about men in women’s clothes shops clogging up the aisle when they are only there to either agree something looks nice, or pay.

stretchedmarks · 19/09/2020 20:50

Oh, another thing about these posts.

Why is the person whining always someone who "struggles" to wear a mask but does it anyway?

You clearly don't struggle to wear one if you can wear one for every single trip out of the house from the moment you set off. That's what you do, right? Because you said to a PP you've always wore one with no exceptions?

My eyes are nearly rolling out of my head.

Inkpaperstars · 19/09/2020 20:51

It's ridiculous how polarised this thread is when the reality is none of us know enough to either defend or criticise this woman.

OP you cannot reasonably conclude she was selfish because there are possible valid explanations such as dementia. However, it is more than possible that those didn't apply here and that it was just selfish or careless behaviour, so defending this woman as if she must have had good reason is not reasonable either. We don't know.

year5teacher · 19/09/2020 20:52

Jesus fucking Christ.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/09/2020 20:53

Covering my face causes me to hyperventilate easily. I'm using small shops more frequently because it's better to be in and out in a minimal few minutes to grab what I need than to risk breathing around a big shop for is longer than unnecessary and risk encountering a judgy know-it-all who concludes that a young, physically healthy woman couldn't possibly be exempt Hmm

The whole point of disability discrimination is that people with physical and mental difficulties have the same rights as the rest of the population. Somebody who is mask exempt has the right to look in a shop to see what the stock is, the same as their mask-wearimg partner.

You can't see that I have a physical reaction to stale humid air that triggers into an anxiety spiral.
You can't see DS1's ASD and sensory issues.
You can't see DS2's asthma.
One family. Three different, legitimate reasons why masks can cause physical and mental distress.

Inkpaperstars · 19/09/2020 20:56

I just want to add that it would be very easy for me to think crikey, is this what we've come to, let the poor woman browse the shop....that would be a natural response. But then I think of the little petrol station near by DM and a lot of her elderly friends, or younger but vulnerable neighbours. They sometimes have to go there and if they were exposed to the virus through an incident like this where it was in fact just selfishness or carelessness, it would seem unforgivable, not a minor 'mind your own' incident.

get a life op ffs

MomToTwoBabas · 19/09/2020 21:00

You are right the stupid woman should have waited in the car if she cannot wear a mask and isnt getting anything.

Inkpaperstars · 19/09/2020 21:01

Yes, you are right, but many of the mask naysayers and 'anti dementors' on here wouldn't agree, they think anyone with any vulnerabilities should be locked up while the fearlessly robust 'get on with it'. That's delusional anyway of course since they wouldn't be able to get on with it, but it has shown up some nasty attitudes.

Although anyway we have no particular reason to suspect the woman in this case was or wasn't exempt.

MomToTwoBabas · 19/09/2020 21:03

Don't want my elderly grandparents possibly getting sick because Karen wants to browse to see if she wants a twix.

A lot of people don’t seem to understand what these restrictions are doing to mental health. People should be able to come out of their homes/cars and experience the world if they need to do it, no question. The UK is not North Korea and people are free.

MomToTwoBabas · 19/09/2020 21:07

Tad dramatic not wanting your family to die doesn't mean you are like Hitler who killed all those innocent people. Really rude.

Ok :

There you go.

No, I said I wore one when required. It is not required whenever out of your house, it is required in shops.

OP posts:
SquirtleSquad · 19/09/2020 21:08

What the actual fuck? Are people really this nasty and small minded.

Why don't you go somewhere you can pay at pump next time OP? You think the non-masked woman should bugger off to a larger supermarket so why shouldn't you spend longer getting to a less convenient or different petrol station with that facility so no one has to suffer being around your misplaced judgement.

everythingisginandroses · 19/09/2020 21:09

Birmingham this week - I expect all the non-mask-wearers here were exempt Hmm:

OP, your thoughts are your own. There are a lot of spanners out there and no-one denouncing you on this thread ever judges other people, obvs...

I think that it should be OK to question someone (politely) why they aren’t wearing a mask.

No, it really isn't OK to ask strangers about their medical history. To think that we have got to this place in just six months. That's scary.
