AIBU?

to think that this woman was very selfish

This morning at the petrol station she was in the shop with her husband, they walked round several of the aisles without buying anything and then she went with him to pay for the petrol, he was wearing a mask and she didn't. He paid for the petrol and they didn't buy anything else.

She should have waited in the car, there was no reason for them both to be in the shop Angry

The best way to deal with this is to assume that everyone not wearing a mask has a valid reason not to, and get on with your life. Don’t worry about others.

My DH is exempt because he has asthma, thus is from Asthma UK guidance

I am not denying that, just puzzled that other countries confirm that it's perfectly fine - but maybe to stick to a 2 layers mask instead of 3 if you really have discomfort... as an example among others. Their sufferers are not said to be passing out.

Wow. Why are you so bothered?!

@fuandylp

Are you trying to start yet another mask fight on Mumsnet?
There seems little point in your post other than some kind of attempt to get people raging about the "selfish" woman in the shop with no mask on.

It's absolutely none of your damn business whatsoever. You have no idea why they were both in the shop and no idea why she wasn't wearing a mask - she's probably exempt.

The worst and possibly most dangerous thing about this pandemic is not the virus itself but this sort of behaviour - checking up and reporting others or stirring up bad feelings on the internet about mask wearing and whether people are breaking Corona regulations such as how many people can meet.

Yes it is my business, she is risking my health by not wearing a mask. I hate wearing them but I do because I'm not selfish to others in shops.

I’m surprised you didn’t dial 999 and have her put in solitary for 24 hours.

No, it really isn't.

@pigsDOfly

Yeah, I've walked around petrol station shops looking for things in the past that they haven't got and ended up coming out empty handed.

Didn't realise someone would be watching and judging me for my lack of purchase.

It's very noticeable when you want to go down an aisle and can't because somebody is not wearing a mask and is going to be within a metre of you.

I wear my mask, but seriously what is the point in these type of posts to get people frothing?
Everyone knows that they're supposed to wear a mask, if they're not wearing one, they're either exempt or don't give a shit.
Either way whinging and hoicking judy knickers on MN isn't going to change things and get them to is it?

Only if she coughed ,sneezed or licked you. As she did none of those then I'd say the risk to your health from her was the size of a gnats bollock.

If you’re so concerned about exemptions etc, why not go and do your mandatory chores at unusual hours - very early or late. Much less likely to encounter anyone.

I take the OP's point: the woman clearly didn't need to be in the petrol station as there was another grown up who could pay for the petrol and go.

I understand a tiny minority of people can't wear masks; but if they really are that much at risk and struggle with them, then they should avoid unnecessary trips into small enclosed shops when there are clearly viable alternatives as there was here.

Masks don't protect the wearer, they protect others. I was wearing one, she should have been too.

@ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore why should they? They’ve every right to be in a shop if they want to be, regardless of if another adult is there with them. Not everyone is terrified of a virus that’s currently got less chance of killing you than you being hit by a car.

BoggledBudgie · 19/09/2020 18:26

@littlemsattitude or maybe you should be locked away? Sounds a much better solution.

FFS. It is absolutely not your business. If she is not wearing a mask it's probably because she is exempt and not because she is selfish.
You've got a problem if you can't go down an aisle because someone isn't wearing a mask. The risk of infection is low if you are simply walking past someone. You're not going to stand next to her for 15 minutes while she talks at you and sprays aerosols at you.
Stay at home if you're that bothered - there are going to be people out and about without masks because they are allowed to do so.

I think you just came on here to wind people up.

Let’s not look for reasons why she wasn’t wearing a mask. It’s just ridiculous that it’s even being discussed. So she wasn’t wearing a mask, crime of the century, not.
