Furlough holiday

MrsQGinglass · 18/09/2020 11:47

I am furloughed still and work for a large international company. There are only a few off us still furloughed 2 in my office only.

I received an informing me that all holiday from last year that was carried over would have to be used in the October. I know the reason why it is cheaper for them to get part of the government to pay it.
My issue is that those that have not been furloughed are allowed to carry over their holiday for the next 2 years.
I really do not think this is fair as they are treating us differently.
I have contacted HR for clarification but they have not answered my emails.
Is this lawful.
AIBUto think that they are treating us unfairly.

@MrsQGinglass Where does any employment law state this?

friendlycat · 18/09/2020 18:06

The thing is that you’re arguing with everyone on here and people are trying to help you see sense and change your attitude but you’re having none of it. These are very difficult times and those employees demonstrating a positive helpful and flexible attitude will be those that keep their jobs if the business can support the level of staff. There are going to be redundancies everywhere and the fact you haven’t been brought back in indicates the business can run without you possibly. All companies are going to be re looking at staffing levels. You really are going to be first in line for reducing staff options with this attitude. Businesses can’t afford for all of those who have been on furlough to carry forward holiday time.

NancyBotwinBloom · 18/09/2020 18:16

Wrap your job in then and get another one.

I wasn't furloughed and I feel burnt out. I'm wiped out. My mental health is suffering because of this.

My colleagues are back and they feel fucking guilty that we've been so overworked. But you know what, it is what it is.

At the end of the day I couldn't give a shit if they can carry their holiday or not. Neither can they. We are all grateful we've still got jobs. We are all pulling together because we have to.

I know you didn't want to be furloughed but listen to people when they are telling you that your role is under risk of redundancy. If that's the case who will be let go first? Team players or people not getting this and still wanting more after all this is over??

SantaClaritaDiet · 18/09/2020 18:21

@MrsQGinglass

I think people need to stop thinking that being furloughed is a great big holiday.
It is what you decide to make of it. It's not your employer's concern if you don't make the most of it and don't treat it as paid leave. How else do you call being paid to not work? Hmm

You still don't get that it was the only alternative of making you redundant, do you?

SantaClaritaDiet · 18/09/2020 18:23

I also am not aware of a single business that genuinely needed to furlough as many employees as it did - many companies just took advantage of making savings on the wage bill

HAHAHA
you might want to have a look at the wave of redundancies and businesses going under and you get back to us why don't you

Pobblebonk · 18/09/2020 18:27

I have not had it easy I have lost over 20% of my salary funnily enough my bills did not go down.

Didn't they? I saved a lot of money on travel to work, things like buying sandwiches for lunches, make-up, hairdressing, tights etc.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/09/2020 18:29

It's not irrelevant if employers use it as an excuse to get rid of women Confused

There is very definite reporting of this

tigger1001 · 18/09/2020 18:32

Holidays have to be paid at 100% when on furlough I believe, so if your wages have been restricted then I would be grabbing holiday with two hands so could have a couple of weeks at full pay.

But employers can insist on holidays being taken when on furlough. I was supposed to have two weeks when I was furloughed but ended back at work before my holiday dates.

Employers won't want everyone to have a load of holidays carried forward as that becomes a nightmare to manage.

Wonkydonkey44 · 18/09/2020 18:33

I’m really glad your not one of my work colleagues moaning about all the furlough you’ve had , all that chance to stay safe at home from the virus whilst your colleagues came to work and did your work as well . If you started moaning about not being able to move your holidays and keep some over for next year after being sat on your backside for 6 months I can assure you you wouldn’t be welcome back !

KrisAkabusi · 18/09/2020 18:35

Where have I said it has to be taken in a lump, we all agreed that we would have to take 25% of our holiday over a quarter at the employers approval.
This is now changed and the only ones not allowed this are those on furlough.

When was this agreed! You haven't taken those holidays each quarter over the last six months have you? Otherwise you wouldn't have anything to carry over.

August and it was from the 31st August once back at work. I can't help it that the government have said that I incur holiday whilst on furlough.

I have never in my life seen someone cling so tightly to being so wrong. I'm almost impressed by it. It's incredible.

Yes!! 😂
SueEllenMishke · 18/09/2020 18:50

I've noticed that this situation has seen whole swathes of people lose perspective and a connection with the real world.

Dozens of people have told you you're wrong yet you're still acting all hard done by.

ameliajoan · 18/09/2020 18:51

I can't help it that the government have said that I incur holiday whilst on furlough.

You also can’t help it that your employer can dictate when you take your holiday.

tigger1001 · 18/09/2020 18:51

@MrsQGinglass

It is funny how everyone is attacking the furloughed employee, if people are so busy at work take it up with your employer and ask for those remaining on furlough to come back to work. Those on furlough did not ask to be furloughed I would have rather been made redundant, than hanging on for a job I may not return to. Would you think the same about someone wanting their holiday entitlement if they were sick?
But you are getting your holiday entitlement. Your argument is that you can't carry that entitlement over to another holiday year.

I was furloughed. I know how rubbish it is. But I also understand that these who were not furloughed had their own struggles and stresses. It's been a rubbish time for us all, for different reasons. I also understood why, once I was back to work why holidays and time off were for these who worked through first and foremost.

And it's not all sunshine and roses for thee carrying holidays forward either - it shows that they haven't had enough time off and stress and burnout are real issues there. Time off is important, especially in stressful times

This a billion percent

Scones13 · 18/09/2020 18:54

Did you not apply for a mortgage holiday surely that would help with your monthly outgoings. I have worked throughout and been denied any holiday as short staffed. All must be carried over to next year. Would love some time off...

CMOTDibbler · 18/09/2020 18:58

I've worked FT throughout, but the company decided that everyone had to use all their leave this year and the best way to do it was to insist on people being all in defined weeks - so a total of 3 weeks was compulsory and none of that was in UK school holidays, or indeed when we could go anywhere.
But much as I am annoyed by it not leaving me time, I recognise that all the leave has to be on the books at your hourly rate so it really helps the company for us all to have drawn it down through the year.

dontdisturbmenow · 18/09/2020 19:01

The problem is that you are only focussing on treating people the same when you lose out.

Did you beg your employer not to be furloughed whilst a colleague desperate for furlough was told they had to work? Or did you think that bring furloughed wasn't do bad then, but you're now kicking of because you're not getting the same benefits.

Have you considered that many people working were actually told they couldn't carry over any holidays, so they had to take that time off during that time, doing exactly the same as you were, but theirs was a supposed holiday?

You are so narrow-minded and entitled, it's sickening. It's hard not to wonder whether there's a reason they picked you to be furloughed.

RaspberryToupee · 18/09/2020 19:04

I can't help it that the government have said that I incur holiday whilst on furlough.

What don’t you get? Nobody is saying you should accrue holiday. They are saying that your employer is entitled to make you take it. And your circumstances are different than those who are still working.

Wow
My colleagues are actually in agreement with me and so is my line manager.

Yeh, I’m not surprised based on how you are in this thread. They’re probably just agreeing because they do not have the energy to argue with someone who will not accept their wrong.

lockeddownandcrazy · 18/09/2020 19:37

You have had six months holiday and you are moaning because you want more? FFS!

LouHotel · 18/09/2020 19:41

OP if only 10% of you and your colleagues are still on furlough I would be preparing yourself for redundancy not worrying about when your getting your holiday pay.
