Baby on Board sign?

Mamawell · 17/09/2020 12:04

What is wrong with a baby on board sign?

I've seen this come a lot on another thread, that it annoys people.

Why?

OP posts:
StillCoughingandLaughing · 17/09/2020 12:06

In a car, or the badges women wear on the tube?

inappropriateraspberry · 17/09/2020 12:07

Because people should be driving safely whether or not there is a baby in the car in front.

newsyoucanuse · 17/09/2020 12:07

Smugness. They’re pointless, it’s not like I was going to ram your car before I knew you had procreated. And having one doesn’t make me less likely to hit you accidentally because I’m not planning on hitting anyone at anytime in my car.

sarge89 · 17/09/2020 12:08

A police officer told me they're useful if you're in a crash then they know there may have been a baby/child in the car too. That's why I have one 🤷‍♀️

pigsDOfly · 17/09/2020 12:09

The don't particularly annoy me but what is the point of them?

I think I find things like 'mum's/dad's taxi more annoying tbh.

Boulshired · 17/09/2020 12:10

I only ever notice them when a car decides to swerve into the safety gap I am leaving. If the message is for me to drive better it would help if they drive better themselves.

Somethingsnappy · 17/09/2020 12:11

I agree with other posters that they're a bit pointless simply as a request/warning to others to drive more safely, but on the other hand, sometimes people use them to to let others know that they may be driving more cautiously themselves because of the baby and so to have patience with them.

glastogal · 17/09/2020 12:11

"A police officer told me they're useful if you're in a crash then they know there may have been a baby/child in the car too. That's why I have one 🤷‍♀️ "

Surely just as useful as the car seats legally required to transport children?

Hingeandbracket · 17/09/2020 12:12

They are wank and pointless

pigsDOfly · 17/09/2020 12:13

I think that police officer has misinformed you sarge89.

If there's a child's seat in a car, emergency services will doubtless make sure they look for a child.

sarge89 · 17/09/2020 12:13

@glastogal He referenced a horrendous crash where the seat was ejected from the car 😩 I figured having a sign wouldn't do any harm. But clearly it's opened me up to judgement on my driving...!?

AllPlayedOut · 17/09/2020 12:14

Because WTF is the point of the bloody things? Am I supposed to prostate myself before them in awe at the beauty of their offspring/ability to conceive?

Should I think well I was planning on ramming into someone today, but now that I see you have a child on board I guess I'll decide to take out Fred and Edna in the green Polo over there.

It is a myth that it alerts the Emergency services who aren't so incompetent that they can't look for a child without a sticker alerting them to the fact. That also doesn't take into account that they are far more likely to see a car seat or child than a 4 inch stick affixed to a piece of material that's designed to shatter into tiny fragments in the event of a major impact. And I doubt that the majority take it out when the child isn't in the car.

pigsDOfly · 17/09/2020 12:14

*glastogal go there before me.

ChanklyBore · 17/09/2020 12:15

They are pointless and twee and often covered in glittery crap like “little princess on board”

No emergency service professional worth their salt would ignore the car seat and the other baby paraphernalia in the event of a catastrophic accident which would have to involve everyone else in the car being completely incapacitated, the infant thrown from the car seat but the baby on board sign being miraculously unscathed. If that were remotely true you’d have to removed the sign whenever you travelled without the baby.

RasberryRoyale · 17/09/2020 12:16

I can take baby on board. I hate Little Princess on board. Or “Mummy to be” on board.

magicalhello · 17/09/2020 12:17

I was told it's so if you are in an accident, the police can check if a car seat/child has been thrown from the vehicle, if you're not able to say there was a child with you

seayork2020 · 17/09/2020 12:17

What is the actual point of them?

There is a baby on board, ok and?

SerenDippitty · 17/09/2020 12:17

Only if you take them off when the baby/child is not in the car so they don’t waste time looking for a baby/child that isn’t there.
ErickBroch · 17/09/2020 12:21

I don't get the issue - if I see someone driving overly-cautious or slow with a sign I just assume it's cause of a baby and give them a bit more space/get less annoyed Grin

ancientgran · 17/09/2020 12:21

My husband (retired police officer, very cynical) wouldn't have one. He said they were like pinning a target on the car for psychopaths. I think he just didn't like them but it is hard to tell sometimes.

VinylDetective · 17/09/2020 12:23

I’ve heard that too. Babies can get overlooked in serious accidents.
TheRuleofStix · 17/09/2020 12:24

They’re absolutely not for the emergency services! They wouldn’t survive a crash Grin.

WheelOfMisfortune · 17/09/2020 12:24

@newsyoucanuse hits the nail on the head. Nobody is like ‘oh, I was about to ram that car, but wait! There’s a BABY on board!’

So stupid. They give me the rage so hard.

Tootletum · 17/09/2020 12:24

I used to get annoyed before I had kids. Then I realised what they're actually saying is "Sorry I'm a crap driver at the moment, my kid's just thrown up/screaming/poured juice everywhere, so I'm a bit distracted".

Having kids is not an excuse for shit driving and endangering other road users.
