Baby on Board sign?

What is wrong with a baby on board sign?

I've seen this come a lot on another thread, that it annoys people.

Why?

Entitled parents use them.

Entitled to what? They confer no privileges.

Caneloalvarez · 17/09/2020 14:01

I was thinking of ordering one of the yellow stickers this week and just saw this thread pop up. I had NO IDEA that so many people would be thinking such mean thoughts about it.. so weird!! Whenever I've seen one I'm like ok so maybe that's why they might be driving a little slower than the speed limit.. never would have crossed my mind to think anything more than that. God people are mean!!

kittenpeak · 17/09/2020 14:01

Exactly. I probably should have said "people who have children and therefore think they're above others, use them"

A BOB sign doesn't mean I won't plan to accidentally have a crash

Misswaleka · 17/09/2020 14:02

As I can see it angers ppl so much I'm definitely buying one and sticking it in my car 🤣🤣

bloodywhitecat · 17/09/2020 14:02

People who drive stupidly or recklessly don't care if you have a Baby on Board/Princess on Board/Elderly Granny on Board sign because they are arrogant enough to think their driving is spot on and they will never cause an accident until they do just that, often with life changing/fatal consequences.

AllPlayedOut · 17/09/2020 14:02

And if the back isn't that badly damaged then you can probably see the occupants, car seats or other child related paraphernalia. And if you're in the emergency services and can't see a car seat in a relatively undamaged rear of the car then with those powers of observation, or lack of, you really should not be in that role.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 17/09/2020 14:02

slightly less bloody irritating than Princess on board, etc.Hmm
I suppose it indicates the driver may not be paying as much attention to driving because they're focussed on child, so give them a wide berth?

StarchyStanley · 17/09/2020 14:02

Exactly @TheKeatingFive. There is almost something a bit primal that some people have, I think. An absolute hatred for other people having babies and possibly even being proud of them. It is not everyone thankfully, but there are always vocal few, frothing "who do they THINK THEY ARE??!!!! Showing off about HAVING A BABY!!!! AAAAAARGH! HULK SMASH" and so on.

As for the pp who says he / she wants to deliberately rear end cars because she sees baby on board stickers on them...Confused. Um...no. I can't say I've ever felt anything like that. Hope everything is ok with you otherwise?

Bloomburger · 17/09/2020 14:02

I wasn't aware it was anything to do with finding a baby which had been shot like a human cannon ball out of the car or asking me to moderate my driving because your cargo is obviously more precious than mine. I always thought it was an apology for the drivers shit driving. 😂

CharityDingle · 17/09/2020 14:02

@ChanklyBore

They are pointless and twee and often covered in glittery crap like “little princess on board”

No emergency service professional worth their salt would ignore the car seat and the other baby paraphernalia in the event of a catastrophic accident which would have to involve everyone else in the car being completely incapacitated, the infant thrown from the car seat but the baby on board sign being miraculously unscathed. If that were remotely true you’d have to removed the sign whenever you travelled without the baby.

Exactly.

And in some cases, I have seen the most careless driving imaginable by drivers sporting those stickers.
As though it's a magic formula which exempts them from taking care and driving properly. Hmm

SonjaMorgan · 17/09/2020 14:04

Do all those with these signs remove them when baby is not on board? I doubt it so I don't see them being much help in the accident situation.

I think they look tacky and my car is full of all sorts of crap without one of these which would undoubtedly fall off the window and into the abyss of said crap.

TheKeatingFive · 17/09/2020 14:04

I agree. It's very strange.

Yes, i'm a little bit worried for the mentality of a few people on this thread tbh.

AllPlayedOut · 17/09/2020 14:06

It annoys me so much because they are utterly pointless and people make up the most nonsensical BS excuses for having them. Just say that you like them and own it. The urban legends associated with them makes no sense. It's also rather depressing that people think so little of our emergency services that they believe that they rely on a 4 inch sticker and that without said sticker it wouldn't occur to them to do a thorough search of the crash site.

Badger2033 · 17/09/2020 14:07

A baby on board sign is to alert emergency services that there is, or was, or should he a young child in the vehicle - in the event of an accident emergency services know to look for that baby.
I don’t know how to say this nicely - - -sometimes young children become displaced during accidents.

TheKeatingFive · 17/09/2020 14:07

And if you're in the emergency services and can't see a car seat in a relatively undamaged rear of the car then with those powers of observation, or lack of, you really should not be in that role.

But why wouldn't you have an aid that may, in some specific circs help them?

Given that this aid hasn't any real downsides (except the bizarre reaction it evokes on here, for some reason).

And fwiw, I've never heard of anyone in RL having an issue. It's one of those MN 'things'

Blurp · 17/09/2020 14:07

If they were genuinely there to alert the emergency services to the presence of a child, surely they'd be stuck to the car's bodywork (inside or out)? And they'd be required by law, and you'd have to take them out when the child wasn't in the car.

If a car seat is installed correctly, it shouldn't be possible to eject it from the car in any but the most serious of accidents (eg the car would have to be flipped over a few times). Booster seats are different, obviously.

TheKeatingFive · 17/09/2020 14:08

Do other kinds of stickers people put on their cars annoy you this much?

If not, why do you think that is?

HelplessProcrastinator · 17/09/2020 14:08

My dad was in the police, always installed rear seatbelts before they came as standard and was very aware of road safety having attended plenty of RTAs. Baby on Board signs gave him the rage. They are pointless at best, at worst they restrict your rear vision and distract other drivers. Paramedics I know feel the same.

If I see one I think the driver is egotistical enough to think I care they have a baby or stupid enough to think the emergency services will need a tacky sign to do the job they are trained for, or both. If you need to warn people you can’t drive properly because you are tired or distracted you shouldn’t be on the road.

SerenDippitty · 17/09/2020 14:09

I’ve even seen “grandchildren on board” which I cannot take remotely seriously as a possible safety warning - what difference does it make whether the children are the driver’s grandchildren or children?

Sirzy · 17/09/2020 14:09

You would have thought parents that thought this was the case would also ensure that there is a proper car seat fitted for the child to make the chances of that happening be minimal!
StarchyStanley · 17/09/2020 14:10

I don't think anyone thinks that the emergency services can't do their job without the signs. But, in, maybe just a handful of cases, they might be helpful. Again, I don't have one, but I find the weird anger on this thread a lot weirder than someone having a sign, for a safety reason or otherwise.

I can think of many things people do to be extra safe, which I don't think are 100% necessary or even useful all the time. But it doesn't make me Angry.

Many do yes.

Perhaps they do both?

Which makes a sign a pretty daft pointer doesn’t it. I’m pretty sure the seat containing a child will give away the fact a child is in the car!

I'm not the only one I know who detests them and I'm pretty sure that those of us on this thread also exist in IRL too.
