Baby on Board sign?

What is wrong with a baby on board sign?

I've seen this come a lot on another thread, that it annoys people.

Why?

I have an emergency alert on my car, as it was a condition of my child’s made to order safety harness. It’s job is to alert so it’s not bright yellow, it’s not stuck to the back window obscuring the view it on the side window next to him.

SideAfries · 17/09/2020 13:10

@AllPlayedOut

yeah well you’d hope people wouldn't tail gate at all for that reason but they do, a baby on board sticker makes people think twice about doing it I think, that’s all I’m saying.

sarge89 · 17/09/2020 13:12

@Malin52 🤣🤦‍♀️ Would you like a broom with that sweeping statement?

Coulddowithanap · 17/09/2020 13:12

We in the emergency services are trained on giving the vehicles a proper 360 as scenes of accidents. We have done exercises where there have been no car seats or stickers in the windows but fake baby and car seat were found in a bush.

MidnightCitrus · 17/09/2020 13:13

@sarge89

A police officer told me they're useful if you're in a crash then they know there may have been a baby/child in the car too. That's why I have one 🤷‍♀️
Do you take it out when the child is not in the car though? I bet a lot dont
PhilCornwall1 · 17/09/2020 13:15

People are clearly in a hurry & like to bully you into driving faster by being 10 inches up your arse - maybe they’re less inclined to do so if they think they might kill a baby/toddler in the process.

The thought of someone being 10 inches up my arse would make me faster than Lewis Hamilton!!!

StarchyStanley · 17/09/2020 13:15

I also thought they were a safety thing; not to prevent people ramming your car on purpose or anything! As a pp said, most people wouldn't do that anyway.

But, because if you all get in a terrible crash and have to be cut out of the wreckage, it can be useful for emergency services to know how many people are in the car. It's easy to miss a small child or baby, as they are smaller.

movingonup20 · 17/09/2020 13:15

It's the little princess on board ones I particularly hate, though I did chuckle at "Thing 1 and Thing 2 on board" love dr Seuss

WetdreamBeliever · 17/09/2020 13:16

They make you more likely to be rear-ended. Look it up.
Apparently people see stickers and tend to drive much closer to read what they say. Talk about unintended consequences!

DuaneBenziesvoice · 17/09/2020 13:16

Can't stand them and they make no difference to the way I drive so they're pointless.

The worse one I saw was "perfect family on board" 🤮

AllPlayedOut · 17/09/2020 13:16

It's easy to miss a small child or baby, as they are smaller.

And a BOB sign in the midst of crumpled wreckage is even smaller.

Chickychickydodah · 17/09/2020 13:16

They don’t bother me to much I think they should make more like
“ knobhead driver “
“Twatty boy racer with a crap car but noisy exhaust”
“ arrogant prick that drives however fast I like “
🤣🤣🤣

Chickenfingers · 17/09/2020 13:17

I have 2 signs up. I think they should be taken notice of by other drivers. E.g I'm driving 30 in a 30, I'm driving safely as I normally would but I also have a baby on board so please stop flashing me to speed up or beep to try distract me. I have a baby on board so I won't drive carelessly just to suit you or let you pass.

StarchyStanley · 17/09/2020 13:18

I don't have one, because I avoid driving anyway. But, having one means they will look for a baby or child. If they don't find one that is no harm done. Better than them missing a baby because both parents are unconscious.

Better still to take the sign out when the DC isn't in the car though, obviously.

PhilCornwall1 · 17/09/2020 13:19

“Twatty boy racer with a crap car but noisy exhaust”
“ arrogant prick that drives however fast I like “
🤣🤣🤣

The noisy exhaust is good enough for people to think twat.

Arrogant prick that drives however fast I like? That's the BMW or Audi badge on the car. Hmm

changerr · 17/09/2020 13:20

They are vomit-inducing. And as for a plain yellow sign, have never seen such. They're usually stickers - so are in the car whether or not a baby is even there - adorned with little giraffes or other tweeness.

But plain sign or not, they make my flesh crawl.

movingonup20 · 17/09/2020 13:21

@FleshLiabilities

And it was before mandatory car seats hence being thrown from the vehicle.

Secure your children safely in a seat that is suitable for their height and weight and crucially fits your car (extended rear facing is useless if it can't be secured safely due to insufficient space I read only yesterday). Meanwhile please try not to worry parents there, my dd (now adult) was in a major accident at 2 and her basic graco forward facing seat meant she was absolutely fine, her dads neck not so much, whiplash is horrid! Cars are much safer than the 80's!

kittenpeak · 17/09/2020 13:24

Drivers shouldn't do that anyway (beep time get past that is). If a driver has it in them to do that, they will do it whether you have a BOB sign or not.

I'm sorry, what they say to drivers is "I've got a baby, please drive carefully to protect my baby" as if to say it's ok to drive badly around cars which don't have them. which is the most twattish entitled thing.

It also says to drivers "I'm a parent, I'm driving all over the place as I'm being distracted" which is normally the case

changerr · 17/09/2020 13:24

I actually thought this was all settled 20 years ago that these stickers are awful. Are they coming back in or something?

pigsDOfly · 17/09/2020 13:29

Those posters with their baby on board sticker are being incredibly naive if they think the sight of one is going to make tailgaters, boy racers and all the other inconsiderate idiot drivers on the road think about their driving and slow down in case they hit a car with a baby in it.

awsomer · 17/09/2020 13:29

@StarchyStanley read the thread: that isn’t what they’re for at all.

Porcupineinwaiting · 17/09/2020 13:30

@StarchyStanley I ask again. The car is so smashed up that you cant look inside and see a carseat/baby but the back window and BoB sticker are miraculously intact? How?

StarchyStanley · 17/09/2020 13:33
@StarchyStanley read the thread: that isn’t what they’re for at all.
Hmmmm I think it can be.

Car seats tend to be black or grey or a similar colour to the inside of the car. I know when I walk over to my car and discover that my DH has moved the car seat into his car and forgotten to out it back, it takes me getting quite near the car before I notice. But, a big, ugly sign, I would notice. If I had one that is, which I don't, so no skin in this fight as it were. Weird how angry they make people though Confused.

Henrysfakebarns · 17/09/2020 13:33

Wow I'm amazed so many . people feel this way about them! I get that you guys aren't about to drive dangerously but lots of people do, and a reminder that their stupid overtaking at a dangerous point might kill a kid surely doesn't hurt?

TidyDancer · 17/09/2020 13:35

I hate them, they are smug and serve no purpose, despite what a number of people on this thread have been lead to believe. They are no more useful than the headlight eyelashes and the 'powered by fairy dust' decals.
