Baby on Board sign?

What is wrong with a baby on board sign?

I've seen this come a lot on another thread, that it annoys people.

Why?

OP posts:

I like them. Lots of people with babies also have toddlers or primary age kid. Toddlers and kids open car doors without a care for the tiny spaces and the car next to them.

If I have a choice I won't park next to a car with a BoB as I'm more likely to have my doors dinged

(That's not a dig, I have 6 kids, it's just fact kids are more careless with doors and if parents are juggling a baby they can be less observant to the bigger one for a second)

imdonenow · 17/09/2020 16:40

I had one until DH thought it was annoying and it didn't suit our car (our car is a typical masculine German car) 🤦🏻‍♀️ and I tried explaining to him about the accident and he simply said, if we were to be involved in a accident surely the emergency services would know there's a baby in a car because 1) the very visible humongous car seat and 2) the car having baby stuff such as toys in the rear.

I now drive without one but have been 10x more cautious since having dc

VenusClapTrap · 17/09/2020 16:45

Right, so people believing their own dc is more important than yours makes you angry? How do you manage to get through a si angle day without spiraling into a rage

No. It doesn’t make me angry. Because most people believe that. But what most people don’t generally do is wear a t-shirt with it emblazoned on the front / tattoo it on their forehead / hang it on a sign in their car. For the simple reason that it gets up people’s noses.

By the way, you do realise that “gives me the rage” is just an expression, don’t you? It doesn’t always mean people are actually furious about something. Often it’s just used as an exaggerated way of expressing annoyance with something. Especially on an online forum.

Legseleven1990 · 17/09/2020 16:55

Right, so the pp who said they wanted to deliberately rear end cars with these stickers was that angry because people are defending their decorating choices with nonsense about safety?

That clearly wasn't literal so you're reaching a bit but nice try. People who use them seem to have as much rage as those who don't and are getting all ragey and pedantic with their silly safety nonsense because people have called out their silly nonsense.

If you want one, fine. Knock yourself out. But its purely decoration. There is literally no need for them. None. Stop with the sillyness.

user15369525797567 · 17/09/2020 17:03

Haven't we very recently had a court case where the personalised clutter in the vehicle was held to be the reason the driver killed someone as it created a blindspot?

So I wouldn't consider the possibility of causing an accident by creating a blindspot with one of these stickers to be implausible.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 17/09/2020 17:12

A police officer told me it makes no difference at all. I always took it to mean "be extra careful - this driver hasn't slept in weeks".

When I was pregnant I wanted one to hang round my neck as I lumbered slowly across the road getting cut up by mothers in 4WD with "baby on board" signs.

EarthlyTent · 17/09/2020 17:16

What I find utterly baffling was the strength of feeling, which you appear to have, and also some others on here. It doesn't seen altogether healthy, but that really isn't my business. Just yours

Yep. Lots of people have strong negative feelings about the most innocuous of things. Sad really.

Anyone else seized by an irrational desire to rear end cars when you see they have a Baby on board sticker?

I won't, of course, but my goodness they are goady entitlement incarnate.

Sorry, this^ wasn't literal? Meaning it is what? A metaphor? Metaphor for what?

And for the fourth time, I don't have one and never have.

The word you’re looking for is ‘hyperbole’.

Baby on Board sign?
fishonabicycle · 17/09/2020 18:51

They are stupid and pointless. However, I did once have one that said 'Baby, I'm bored'.

Thanks for the grammar lesson!

Well then, it is pretty weird that someone works themselves up to this level of hyperbole over something so innocuous. But many of you still seem intent on engaging in this. I, on the other hand, am bowing out.

Some strange and unhinged posts on here.

I'll leave you to enjoy yourselves!

People getting enraged over a sign. 😂 Get a life!!!!

There's a car I pass frequently during dog walks that has a sticker in the back window saying: 'only speeding cos I need a poo'.

I wouldn't say it enrages me exactly, but it does make me mentally roll my eyes.

I assume the driver isn't a 5 year old boy.

(slightly off topic, I know)

Miljea · 17/09/2020 22:02

@Badger2033

A baby on board sign is to alert emergency services that there is, or was, or should he a young child in the vehicle - in the event of an accident emergency services know to look for that baby. I don’t know how to say this nicely - - -sometimes young children become displaced during accidents.

You need to RTFT, don't you?

Or are you so distracted by weeks of sleepless nights that you think your potentially dangerous and erratic driving should be excused, as others have suggested?

Rather than 'do not drive if you are in any way impaired'....

But, do RTFT.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 17/09/2020 22:09

I didn't like them until I found a Star Wars one. That's why I have one. Grin

Miljea · 17/09/2020 22:18

(Venus): "The reason they give people the rage is because the implication is ‘my PFB is more important than you and yours’."

Exactly. Or I might be driving like a 90 year old, erratic dementia patient (who should have had their car taken away before now) -,doing 15 in this busy 30 zone because I HAVE A BABY ON BOARD, an actual BABY which, to us, in this car, is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER, thus YOU MUST RESPECT THIS!!!! AND I MIGHT BE REALLY TIRED (thus, legally, shouldn't be driving at all). So ADAPT your DRIVING to meet my DEFICITS!

I, as a fellow driver, should not need to have any knowledge of your family status, vis a vis how you're driving; or how I alter my (already calm, measured and considerate) driving style to mitigate against yours.

Ditch the stickers. Police and paramedics don't take any notice; fellow drivers roll their eyes.

Fallada · 17/09/2020 22:26

It’s a twee decorating choice, like having eyelashes on your headlights. I can’t believe anyone still genuinely thinks it’s a safety alert to emergency services.

Spermysextowel · 17/09/2020 23:42

For the PPS who’ve asked why this topic has resurfaced; I thinks it’s on the back of a thread from yesterday ‘things that annoy you that are none of your business’. BOB signs were mentioned.
It isn’t worth the ire. Whether you have a reason to think it’s worth buying one, or you despise them it really doesn’t matter.

makingmammaries · 18/09/2020 09:33

Back in the 1970s, my self-important neighbour had one that said: “Pull back. Give my CHILD a CHANCE”. I don’t think “Baby on Board” has been around that long, but presumably comes from the same attitude - namely, that you might decide to drive carefully for the next 5 minutes because of my special sprog.
And then we got the proliferation of “Show Dogs in Transit” (which are presumably to be given priority over stray pedestrians) and so on.

SerenDippitty · 18/09/2020 09:38

I just remembered I have seen one which said Mother To Be on Board.

SecretSpAD · 18/09/2020 17:22

Mother To Be

Or, less romantically "a few months ago I had unprotected sex"

Apologies to those undergoing ivf etc.
