@EDSGFC when I said “I” I meant me personally, I know nothing about curried goat.

You know you are on a site called Mumsnet, right? Are we expecting a legal challenge from men?

The strapline says something like "by parents for parents" or similar. It's made clear that all are welcome - women, men, parents, non parents. They've also set up dadsnet as a separate board.

@EDSGFC

it’s just that as a white person there is nothing of value I can add there!

Well, there's a thread about spice mix for curried goat available from Amazon being discussed - why couldn't white have something to contribute to that thread?

What makes you think you cannot contribute?

It’s a bit like not allowing disabled people in an area for non disabled people
As a disabled person, that’s total bullshit. And exactly explains the ridiculous outrage. It’s like not allowing able bodied people in an area for disabled people. Able bodied are both the majority and privileged. Rather like whites.

@PatricksRum well done and congratulations on achieving this.

I will lurk & learn Smile

That comment about income was vile. Not surprised it came from Xenia.

"It's a bit like not allowing disabled people into areas for non disabled."

Like disabled parking spaces and toilets you mean Hmm

Black people need a board to discuss their own stuff, they asked for it, mumsnet agreed. All good!

Disabled people, black people and women all need their own spaces to do their thing. Everyone else should butt out.

If other minorities want it they are free to ask too.

It's like the predictable "what about men's day" that always happens on international women's day.

@Phoenix21 well I had a look at the topics so far and there’s nothing I can add value to.

Curried goat (I’m a veggie but also know nothing about it), type 4 hair (mine is type 2-3).

I guess a post might come up I feel I have something to contribute but so far that is not the case, so I will just be pleased that the board now exists for the people who do want to post there.

Seeing the posts that said white people shouldn't post on there???

And quite a few of the replies show why the new board is needed...

I guess the thing to say is that anyone can, and should, post on any thread where they either have an interest, or a point to make in a polite manner, regardless of colour or creed.

I am glad the section has been set up if a majority think it is needed. I have my personal reservations, but if MN deems it acceptable then that is fine by me.

Regardless of whether anyone fits the targetted colour, I would say please post if any topic is of interest or you feel you can add to the discussion.

Those who would ( and did, very clearly) say differently, are not in control of who can or cannot post where.

I'm very pleased for you, because I know you battled.
I would never oppose any specific group, but have to agree that sometimes these things just create bigger divisions.
It's very sad that it is needed in the first place.

But why would you think that authors of posts in the black sub forum want your opinion? I mean, if they’ve posted in the black sub forum, they surely want the opinions of other black people. They know the rest of the forum exists, and if they wanted recipe ideas from all people, they would have posted it in the general forums. They’re still allowed to post elsewhere. It’s kind of arrogant to think that people might be missing out on your expertise because they’ve posted somewhere you won’t see it, when that’s where they’ve chosen to post.

@WiseOwl69 but if you want to you could contribute or ask right?

I know little about dogs. Yet I regularly lurk on that topic and have learnt quite a bit.

@DoubleDolphin

Where has that actually been said?

It might've been mentioned as an idea by 1 or 2 posters when people were talking about setting up the board but it doesn't seem to be an idea that has been taken on board by MN.

No one is banned from any section on MN. It's just some sections simply aren't of use to some individuals. I for one have never been on Scotsnet because it's just not relevant to me but if it became so I'd use it. Same goes for the Black Mnetters section.

Congratulations @patricksrum ⭐️
I'm really pleased that you got your section despite the cringy opposition to it.

With regards to boards for other ethnicities, it's up to those people to request a board so MN can gauge demand for such a space.

monkeyonthetable · 16/09/2020 15:47

Actually @ DoubleDolphin, there is a specialist board reserved only for people who have a particular issue. I won't say what because I don't want people tracking it down: it is well hidden for good reason and no one else is welcome on it, though I don;t think MN enforce that - they just hid it well on request. There were some furious complaints at first, but it is a really necessary board where people with a particular issue meet to discuss it without others constantly piling in with 'advice' that is so far of the mark it's exhausting to have to keep explaining. I get the impression a Black Only board is the same. Issues no one else has so no one else understands but everyone has opinions about. It does get tiring having to repeatedly explain or soothe ruffled egos when you just want to chat about your thing that no one who hasn't lived it gets through it. Where's the harm in that? Plenty of spaces for everyone to share. Apartheid would be: Black people can only post in this place and no other. This is just a specific chat room for specific issues.

@DoubleDolphinis it possible to get a response to my 15.21 post to you?

@mumsnet, can you comment please and clarify that the black section is not blacks only? And whether or not you have been asked for it to be such?
