Can we have a whites only section or one only for women who work full time and earn over a certain amount?

Grow up - you sound pathetic

@DoubleDolphin

And is that not..well... a teeny bit racist?

Is the LGBT topic heterophobic?
Is Scotsnet anti-English?

No? Exactly.

"What happened in apartheid was that, amongst other things, police shot black schoolchildren who were protesting. Shot them dead.

So please stop comparing this to that."

Lots of things happened in apartheid, but the crux of it was that black people were segregated out and not allowed in certain white areas, which the whole world agrees is not right or fair. Which is why this not allowing white people in certain areas feels very similar. I'm thinking this is actually not the case here, but worrying that so many people on the thread were happy to jump to the "we dont want whites here" position.

Shouldn't black issues form a centre point of discussion on the main boards rather than being hidden away?

I think black people would enjoy having a safe space to discuss whichever issues they want, without white people jumping on and screaming about being ‘left out’ 🙄 or the usual ‘Not All White People Are Like That’.

I’m happy they are getting this space and hope all the white people will respect it and stay away.

Apartheid and segregation were about treating black people as subhuman, denying them fundamental human rights, basic freedoms and involvement in the democratic process. It was barbaric oppression. How anyone can be so mind-numbingly ignorant as to compare those hideous regimes to a sub-forum for black people beggars belief.

Report
Florencex · 16/09/2020 15:26

why is it racist for black people to have a board where they can talk to other black people about their own individual experiences

It is text book racist. Membership is defined by one of the protected characteristics. You only need to turn it around to see if it is racist or not, a board for white people only...?

I am shocked that it has been allowed. And I mean shocked in the sense that I am amazed mumsnet legal advisors have not advised against it as opposed to whether I personally mind (which I don’t).

Dolphin you clearly know absolutely nothing about the apartheid.

Please stop talking about it in this context.

You arent understanding. LGBT doesnt keep heterosexuals out of the group, saying "not welcome here". Neither does scotsnet.

I'm not opposed to having forums for different topics, it's the banning of other people or races that doesnt sit right.

@DoubleDolphin please just go look at the new board, look at the posts already there, and think about the function of the board.

It isn’t to “segregate” anyone, it’s to create a space where black posters know they can ask questions and get responses from those with similar life experiences.

You would also just hope that a big company like MN would have the common sense and intelligence to realise that racism goes beyond the black/white narrative and think 'hmmm, one ethnic minority has shown us why they need a safe space, would make sense that others would too, maybe we should look into this'

Agreed,

Also why are people presuming that black Mumsnetters will only post on the black board? I spend a lot of time on the feminist board because it is relevant to my life but I'm also frequently on the other boards, I mean a parking thread is of interest to all, isn't it!!

WiseOwl69 · 16/09/2020 15:30

And it’s not that this new board excludes white people, it’s just that as a white person there is nothing of value I can add there! Much like me heading over to the adoption board or step parent board, not my life experience so I won’t add anything.

I've had a peek.

One of the first threads is on curried goat recipes.

By all means if you are a White/Asian/Other person etc and can contribute info. on creating a fabulous meal, go knock yourself out*

If not, stay out of the kitchen, eh?

*I can't. Can help with offering fantastic Thai curry recipes if they should ask though.

Again, a lack of understanding. The crux of apartheid was the blacks only and whites only....keeping black people out of certain areas. No problem whatsoever with subforums, it's the banning of other races on it that doesnt sit right. Surely we are all meant to be all inclusive and welcoming? Again, I dont actually believe mn want to ban people and indeed we cant tell who is of what race unless we reveal it, but it's the other posters wanting this and not seeing the irony of it. It's a bit like not allowing disabled people into areas for non disabled.

I totally agree with OhReally. You can't just do this for Black people, they are not the only ethnic minority. If you are going to do it for one, then you should also set up boards for other minorities who feel they would benefit from a space too.

Well, there's a thread about spice mix for curried goat available from Amazon being discussed - why couldn't white have something to contribute to that thread?
