"Sanitisethat

Safe spaces are not segregation.

It isn’t segregation for women to want women-only spaces. It isn’t segregation for gay people to want gay bars. It isn’t segregation for welsh male voice choirs to only have male voices. It isn’t segregation to have a ‘ladies in finance’ networking organisation. It isn’t segregation to have BAME working groups in political parties.

Any group has a right to seek out spaces where they can share their experiences with other groups who share the same background as them. This is not a new, controversial or unusual thing. My work has twenty different committees - a women’s network, an LGBT network, a BAME network, a parents’ network. None of this is remotely comparable to segregation.

Segregation was a specific act of oppression forced upon Black people by white people for the specific purpose of limiting their power, reducing their opportunities, preventing them from accessing wealth and depriving them of a range of basic civil liberties. It was one of the most unjustifiable atrocities ever wrought on any group of people in the history of the world.

So please, just stop. Stop watering it down and claiming you’re a victim of segregation thanks to the mere existence of a board which doesn’t cater to your particular experience. Stop acting as if this board sets a new and dangerous precedent when mumsnet is filled with specific boards catering to different groups already, none of which are the cause of any controversy whatsoever. Stop with this painful ignorance and entitlement."

@EDSGFC I've just seen your post on the other thread where you say a black couple sending their kids to private school have more privilege than poor white people.

Do you not see that just because there are a minority of black people who have become successful doesn't mean there is a level playing field for most black people?

Calling people Karen is very immature.

I'm personally glad to know a safe space is allowed to exist on MN, as it makes clear the utter hypocrisy with which FWR is treated.

Interestingly, society increasingly disallows women any safe spaces, unless of course, they share an axis of oppression with men.

White women are the only group in society who do not share an oppression with men. It's interesting that they are not allowed safe space with other women, but are forced at all turns to allow men into their space.

Havaiana · 16/09/2020 22:31

@EDSGFC 'Karen' was a term coined by black women in the US to describe white women who use their privilege against black people.

The term was hijacked by men but its origin is not misogynistic.

@Butterer yes it was I posted and re-read and just wanted to crawl under a rock 🤦🏼‍♀️ Tried to make my post as genuine sounding as possible and end up with the word ‘blacks in it’ I could just die.

Can you post the context of that post ie a poster telling another specific poster that they have the privilege of sleeping in a safe place every night and so from that privilege they need to challenge racism wherever they see it. I asked how anyone knew the circumstances of any individual on MN eg that any particular poster had the safety of a safe place to sleep and that expecting say, a wife to challenge her bullying, abusive husband for his racist comments or the white worker on the bottom rung of the ladder to challenge his boss was really missing the point and did anyone expect people like that couple - son at public school, parents both privately educated - to also challenge racism everyone they see it.

Why not post the context?

Happylittlethoughts · 16/09/2020 22:36

You know I waded through 4 threads on this topic and at no point did I feel that the tone was anti- white and at no point did I read I was banned from being on the Black Forum. Some of you are twisting words and gleefully waving them in the air as reverse racism.
Patrick's Rum was fuckin stoic and single minded and under extreme pressure and abuse was nicer than a lot of posters deserved.
Fuck me I am embarrassed for so fucking many of you!

@EDSGFC I think it might be TAAT territory, will get deleted. Ignore me.

WhatDoIDooDIoDtahW · 16/09/2020 22:38

Are people actually fighting over whether black people or white people coined the ‘Karen’

My question on why you all wanted your own board has been answered. 🤦🏼‍♀️

BlackWaveComing · 16/09/2020 22:39

Nah, it originated in Reddit, that famously civil, pro-woman website.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/09/2020 22:39

I showed my white DH this thread as I was laughing at some of the racist posts. They actually think they’re hurting people’s feelings rather than making themselves look stupid. He was flabbergasted by the numbers of them as he didn’t think MN was a hotbed of racism. Anyway, he asked whether the racists saw the irony in complaining about a sub board focusing on black womens issues on a board focused on women’s issues which could be seen as excluding men. I just shrugged.

Anyway isn’t it time racism was classified as a form of disorder or illness? The racists are OBSESSED with what minorities are up to on stalkerish levels. I swear that if all the minorities left the U.K. and they achieved their lillywhite fantasy, within about a week they’d put up a satellite to watch, stalk and obsess about minorities and then find a way to involve themselves.

cabingirl · 16/09/2020 22:39

Fellow white people:

  1. This board existing doesn't harm you or hurt your experience on Mumsnet.
  1. This is not a board which promotes hate speech or free speech and therefore has wider implications for hurting anyone in our society.

For people interested in other minority subthreads being created:

  1. It's not an either / or situation. There wasn't just one spot and the black mumsnetters grabbed it. It's a movement towards the awareness of how useful/needed specialist spaces can be. It's the spearhead of YOUR campaign to create the subthread you need. I would see it as a benefit to all, not a negative thing.

No one is being forced to ONLY post in this new thread, and no one is being told they can't post there because of their race.

It's an expansion of the Mumsnet site.

Again - if it's not something you are interested in contributing to, it doesn't affect your Mumsnet experience AT ALL.

babyb2nd · 16/09/2020 22:41

Was that not clear enough? @EDSGFC I was talking to you!!!

Same as yesterday, you came here to be divisive not supportive. Why do you always ignore the main question I asked, why are you here?

You seek out posts on black women and say unnecessary things. It's so beyond weird! Yesterday and today, I can only imagine how many other times a day you do this.

Why did you post on this thread. Stop diverting. Answer the question!!

Like I said you gave the example of travellers and I said, you're right they shouldn't be treated like that, I want to be their ally, why can't you offer the same understanding to black people?

@BlackWaveComing - Do you think it's acceptable this person seeks out posts on black people only to come and be divisive?

cabingirl · 16/09/2020 22:42

*edit

This is not a board which promotes hate speech or discourages free speech

Havaiana · 16/09/2020 22:43

So its origin is racist then?

It's not racist, it's a term for racist white women, not all white women. There was also "BBQ Becky"s and "Corner Store Carolines" etc.

WhatDoIDooDIoDtahW · 16/09/2020 22:43

Would be interesting to have a database of everyone’s ages here and see in what age group are white people offended by black people having their own board.

Or is it just me that finds that sort of thing interesting..

Havaiana · 16/09/2020 22:44

My question on why you all wanted your own board has been answered. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Who's 'you'? I'm not black.

Havaiana · 16/09/2020 22:46

@BlackWaveComing

Nah, it originated in Reddit, that famously civil, pro-woman website.
No, that's not true. It was invented by black women. There's a whole host of videos on YouTube that show why (appalling treatment of black women).
cabingirl · 16/09/2020 22:46

Also, everyone's going to post on AIBU 75% of the time anyway for the views, so it's really weird how triggering this is for some of you!
