Good old Xenia never fails to make any thread about her.

@EDSGFC - just to clarify re moderation. There was a suggestion or indeed an ask to consider black moderators. This was based on experience of non black people often being blind to (wilful or not) of inherent racism in comments and posts. The suggestion/ask was focusing on informed nuanced moderation in a similar way to debates held on FWR. An informed moderator could perhaps see micro aggression in a poster re-setting a 'suggestion or ask' from a black woman into a 'demand' - feeding into a well worn racist trope. The concern, and I as a white woman recognise this, is that a less informed moderator could allow such micro-aggression to stand.

Excellent work by all who campaigned for the board!

@OnceUponAThimble

For a group who fights to be seen as equal, you really are contradicting yourselves imo. I notice that the black community (first generation immigrants) don't mix with white people either. They stick with their own only. And then they wonder why they don't integrate. I personally think that it's sad that you need a forum based on the colour of your skin. But if it's what you want, go for it.
I look forward to seeing you drop into the SN forums and tell them that it's sad they need a forum based on disabilities. Or into Infertility to tell them their shared struggle with conceiving doesn't require a board. Really they should all integrate, one world, one love...do tag me when you do that, I am all agog.
ArabellaScott · 16/09/2020 17:22

Good luck to the board and all who sail on her.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 16/09/2020 17:27

And the apartheid comments are beyond the pale.

As someone who lost relatives during Apartheid and has lived in SA and seen first hand the legacy of colonialism and Apartheid, and the tribal tensions and bigotry it whipped up. I have relatives that had to flee for their lives or risk losing their children to forced adoptions because their children were mixed race (and literally born as a result of a criminal offence) and others for fighting for the right to be recognised as human. It is not the same as having a board discussing black issues that you may not even have anything to contribute to.

I hope @MNHQ takes these comments seriously. You are comparing people being dehumanised and treated as sub human to having a board that is not relevant to your own life experience on an open forum. It's disgusting.

@AuntyPasta

If anyone wondered why posters wanted a section for black mumsnetters this thread should cover it.
😂 It's almost too perfect!
AuntyPasta · 16/09/2020 17:30

I’m off to the camping section. I’ve never been camping in my life and have no interest in sleeping outside but I’ll not be excluded.

OnceUponAThimble · 16/09/2020 17:31

I suppose I shouldn't venture onto the threads about carparking as I don't have a car, or the threads about legal issues as I'm not a lawyer, or the threads about divorce as I've never been divorced. You're choosing to segregate YOURSELVES based only on the colour of your skin - specifically black skin. If anyone else did that TO YOU, there would be holy unheavenly fucking war.

Havaiana · 16/09/2020 17:32

Can anyone link the thread where this was debated? Thanks!

Quaagars · 16/09/2020 17:32

Go in and tell them that camping is stupid, why are they excluding people who don't like camping and WHAT ABOUT THE HOTELS? DON'T THEY COUNT TOO?!

Or something lol

Good idea. I could go over and wank on about how I prefer cottages and how they are Doing Holidays All Wrong.
EarthlyTent · 16/09/2020 17:33

There's a camping section? That's so sad. Can't they just post in the same forum as everyone else? We're all humans after all.

BadBanana · 16/09/2020 17:33

I didn’t think you’d actually get it, so we’ll done! I’ll never use it, don’t see why I would segregate myself like that.

Hope you don’t get the tunbleweed though, I imagine most might feel the same.

Number 1. I’m mixed race so a black person definitely integrated for me to exist.

Number 2. I’m assuming you have mixed raced kids or are in a mixed raced relationship seeing as you are clearly such a massive advocate for integration?

Keep it coming, MN will be even more certain they made the correct decision and it will be the start of many more minority boards Wink

Well this is a calm and measured response to the idea of a sub forum based on shared experiences Grin Grin
Cassilis · 16/09/2020 17:35

As a BAME person who was earning £20k less than her colleagues for the same job until #BLM, thank you for the new section.

DysonDiva · 16/09/2020 17:35

@Havaiana, there were others, but this is one of them.

Thanks DysonDiva !

DumplingsAndStew · 16/09/2020 17:35

Ffs its not about segregating black posters, its about giving people a focused space for issues that pertain only to them.
For example, It's about being able to ask for advice on every day hair styling, without someone coming on and saying "Why can't you just run a comb through it and pop it in a ponytail? Why does it have to be more high maintenance than that,?"

DumplingsAndStew · 16/09/2020 17:36

Sorry I am aware there are much other issues than hair styling, but struggled to think of anything specific right now.

That’s it, isn’t it? MN as a site can only react to user needs and requests. They’ve reacted to this particular request, but not at the expense of any other group.
If a site needs to reflect diversity then members can point that out. It’s welcomed.

Can you not tell the difference people choosing to do something for themselves and people having something forced upon them? Genuinely?

Like, do you struggle to see how a person choosing to have sex is different to someone else forcing them to have sex? Do you find it hard to understand why people like to go out for dinner but don’t want to be force fed? Is it hard for you to appreciate the difference between a person choosing to smoke a joint and a person being roofied?
