Quaagars

I think it's multicultural families board that already exists - from what people said on other threads. I don't think there's a BAME board

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 16/09/2020 16:50

Is Xenia a high earner? Christ, 11 years I've been on here and I never knew that.

AryaStarkWolf · 16/09/2020 16:50

People are idiots, enjoy your space

UndertheCedartree · 16/09/2020 16:51

@Michaelbaubles - absolutely! My reply is always 'it's children's day everyday!' (It's white people's day everyday!)

Quaagars · 16/09/2020 16:52

Now all I can think about is someone asking for a board where everyone' will be going "I'm considerably richer than YOW!" Harry Enfield style Grin
shows age

OhReallyThen · 16/09/2020 16:52

@EDSGFC

Your arguments would be more valid if MN agreed to let other minorities have their own board, if they want it though.

Given the report on here that it's been asked for, for some time, and hasn't happened why has it been granted only for black mumsnetters? Because that does, on first glance, suggest discrimination.

I don't think it's discrimination at all. I think it's a mix of 2 mains things.

  1. Going about it in different ways.

I and every other poster I've seen asking for an Indian/Chinese/Eastern European board has done it by asking for it in posts and tagging @MNHQ in these. Whether it appears that for the Black board a thread was started on site stuff asking for this so it caught the attention of MNHQ more. Hopefully we can get this started for other ethnic minorities now because before I just wasn't aware this was how to go about it.

  1. In light of everything that has been going on with BLM in recent months MNHQ are obviously more aware of black issues than other races because they've become front and centre in the media. This has meant that they're more on it with black posters requesting things recently so this has happened first.

I just hope this has paved the way for ethnic minorities to have safe spaces on MN and thanks to Patrickrums hard work it will now be easier to campaign and get an Indian Mumsnetters board.

Can't we all be together? We are all humans after all.

Newfornow · 16/09/2020 16:55

Totally agree with @OhReallyThen.

“Given the report on here that it's been asked for, for some time, and hasn't happened why has it been granted only for black mumsnetters? Because that does, on first glance, suggest discrimination”

EDSGFC · 16/09/2020 16:55

@OhReallyThen

It would be good if MN would respond and explain why and hopefully they will allow any group who wants it their own boards.

Arsewell · 16/09/2020 16:56

So now how about boards for the other Ethnic Minorities who get shouted down by "white middle aged women"

As has already been mentioned several times on this thread and elsewhere, there is nothing stopping anyone from requesting boards for people from other ethnic backgrounds if that's what they want and feel it would be useful.

Longtalljosie · 16/09/2020 16:57

Excellent. A good decision, Mumsnet. Well done @patricksrum!

Presume you're also against Craicnet, Gransnet and Scotsnet then? We are all humans after all...
Quaagars · 16/09/2020 16:58

Can't we all be together? We are all humans after all

We ARE still all together - everyone posts together on the main boards, that's not stopping

Saucery · 16/09/2020 16:58

@WhatifIfeellikeacat

Can't we all be together? We are all humans after all.
We are. We’re all on a parenting site. Which is split into topics to help us navigate it. I have no interest in, or experience of, keeping fish, chickens, living in Ireland, Overseas, conception, prams or lots of other stuff. The presence of those topics on the boards is not an affront to my existence or in any way exclusionary.
MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/09/2020 16:59

No, of course it isn't bloody racist. Any more than the FWR board is 'sexist'. But suggesting that it is would be ridiculous, right? So why would that be any different for black members?

With ill-disguised racism existing even on a site like this, and every thread raised by a PoC about race peppered with some responses that reek of white supremacy, is it any wonder black Mumsnetters have felt the need for their own space?

@Sanitisethat

Lots of things happened in apartheid, but the crux of it was that black people were segregated out and not allowed in certain white areas, which the whole world agrees is not right or fair. Which is why this not allowing white people in certain areas feels very similar.

Does it fuck. Similar? Seriously? There is one forum on mumsnet where you’ve been politely asked not to post unless you have experience of living as a black person and you think that’s ‘similar’ to being arrested for sitting in the wrong section or a bus, or being lynched for allegedly looking at a white woman the wrong way, or being forced to attend a segregated school where the resources and training were completely inadequate, or forced to use a separate entrance into businesses, or shot dead for protesting, or denied the right to vote?

You haven’t been banned from anywhere. You can bleat about it all you like, but it simply has not happened. Some black posters have simply expressed a view that they would prefer for white posters not to fill the board up with their opinions and experiences, since it’s about creating a community of people who specifically share the experience of being black.

You are no more banned from that board than you are from the LGBT board, but on both you should be refraining from sharing your views unless you actually have directly relevant experience. A black person saying to you that your opinions on racism aren’t relevant to them is NOT the same as you being banned. It’s just that you have nothing of value to add, so why not just move on?

Great post @Sanitisethat
Dyrne · 16/09/2020 16:59

@EDSGFC

As other have said, from the sounds of it the campaigns have gone a different way - by raising it on threads like this it smacks a bit of Whataboutery and posts get lost in the avalanche of arguments.

Raising a specific thread on Site Stuff seems like the way to go.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/09/2020 17:00

You learn something every day - didn't know these other boards existed.

Yep, all tucked away in "Other Stuff" Smile

I think we got fed up being called trolls for saying stuff about schools being back in August and being told that we didn't in fact know when the cut of dates for school were... :o

I think we were initially directed to the local boards but with a small population there was a lot of tumbleweed blowing in those.

I hope this new section works out for folks and that other groups get what they need too.

LizzieSiddal · 16/09/2020 17:00

Congrats!! Flowers I’m pleased you have some space.

yeOldeTrout · 16/09/2020 17:00

This thread is not kicking off nearly enough for entertainment value .

SionnachRua · 16/09/2020 17:01

And btw, well done to @patricksrum and all the other MNers who campaigned for this. As ever, this thread is a perfect example as to why the forum is needed...

Southernsoftie76 · 16/09/2020 17:02

Who is Xenia? Off to do an advanced search.

Dominicgoings · 16/09/2020 17:02

She tends not to mention it. Shy you see 🤪
