So if poor people want to meet their extended families could they just club together to hire some land and claim they are chasing foxes followed by a nice pub lunch after? Would they be fined?

"HuffPost UK has learned that the Cabinet Office’s special Covid-19 Operations ministerial committee – chaired by Michael Gove – scheduled a meeting on Saturday, with one agenda item titled: “Exemption: hunting and shooting.” "

If they honestly felt they needed a specific meeting to exempt hunting and shooting, that says more about the ineptness of the government than anything else.

Florencex · 15/09/2020 10:16

What a surprise that a headline in the Guardian focuses on those particular activities from a long list of exemptions. 🙄

GetOffYourHighHorse · 15/09/2020 10:19

'It's a bit of a misleading headline which as it's the Guardian is to be expected. This is the wording from the government that allows this: Organised sport or exercises classes or licensed outdoor physical activity. This does not include informal sport or fitness activity with family or friends – this must be limited to a group of 6. Elite sporting competition and training So this covers all organized sports such as football, rugby, cricket as well as the licensed outdoor shooting events.'

This!! It is classed as a sport that's all. It isnt as if they are saying only grouse hunting is allowed that is all, the plebs must stay inside.

That said it is a shit and cruel sport and should be banned as should all hunting

merrymouse · 15/09/2020 10:21

Pro-hunting and shooting groups can continue to hold gatherings of between six and 30 people because they are covered by a loophole that permits licensed “outdoor activity”.

The Huffington Post article is inept too.

While people may be allowed to go hunting and shooting, people can't just meet up inside to talk about being 'pro-hunting'.

There is no 'loophole' that allows licensed outdoor activity. People are deliberately allowed to do organised outdoor activities, and hunting and shooting are organised outdoor activities.

@ameliajoan

Of course they’re sports. You just don’t like them so don’t want them to be, but it doesn’t change the fact that they are.

Calm yourself down and stop trying to turn this into something it’s not.

I am stealing this from another poster. You badly need to read this:

Separately, fuck anyone defending bloodsports. There's no excuse that justifies killing animals merely for that oh-so-wonderful hit of pleasure that it gives you as you watch them die. Mmm, does that get you hot? Does it make you feel powerful? You sick fuck.

Totickleamockingbird · 15/09/2020 10:26

@Lasttraintolondon

Ahh another thread trying to create a them vs us narrative out of a spurious story. If you hate hunting OP, why not try a more honest post: 'I hate hunting AIBU?'
Yes again hunting apologist! Here you go: Separately, fuck anyone defending bloodsports. There's no excuse that justifies killing animals merely for that oh-so-wonderful hit of pleasure that it gives you as you watch them die. Mmm, does that get you hot? Does it make you feel powerful? chomalungma · 15/09/2020 10:27

It's not just the Guardian. People's prejudices are showing.

Totickleamockingbird · 15/09/2020 10:30

@pandafunfactory

It never fails to surprise me just how ignorant of country sports people can be whilst still holding terribly strong views about how vile it all is. The lack of understanding of the industry under discussion on this thread is embarrassing.
It is not a sport, country or not. It is killing. Full stop. Calling people ignorant might make you feel good about yourself but it doesn’t change the fact that hunters and their apologists are sick at heart.
merrymouse · 15/09/2020 10:32

It is not a sport, country or not. It is killing. Full stop.

However it is currently legal.

I don't know enough about grouse shooting to comment on it one way or the other.

However, if you want grouse shooting to be banned, using covid restrictions isn't the way to do it.

Totickleamockingbird · 15/09/2020 10:32

@MagicSummer

This is not killing for fun - it is killing for food. Have you tried grouse and pheasant? They are very tasty.
They will be as tasty if grown on a farm. Why hunting? There is no way you can apologise this sickening crime which is not even a sport (someone posted a definition of sports up thread).

What do you need to know about grouse shooting to figure out that it is animal cruelty? I used to see those pictures of British and Indian elite in books, standing proud and man-like, with a foot on the beautiful beautiful body of a magnificent lion. Used to make me feel sick. And these hunters had some balls you know. A rifle, a while platoon of servants and shooters to back them up. All of them against one animal. SOBs. How sick at heart you have to be to count animal killing as a day out?

"Covid protections in place as Glorious Twelfth grouse shoots get under way in Scotland".

"Sporting estates across Scotland hope the shooting season will bring a much-needed boost for rural businesses at this time of major economic uncertainty.The grouse season in Scotland, which runs for 16 weeks from 12 August to 10 December, is estimated to be worth around £32 million a year–part of the £350 million overall value of game and country sports to the nation. Sporting shooting supports 11,000 full time jobs north of the border, of which 2,640 are in the grouse sector."

For those who continually throw down the hunting = Entitled toffs card- bore off will you.

I was dragged up in a single parent on the poverty line household and I can usually afford to attend a few meets a year with my horse, often in borrowed gear.

And those folk are 100x more accepting and encouraging of me than anyone ever has been in any of the other sports I tried growing up - where I was often bullied by people of the same class for whatever reasons. I’ve been given free days out because they know how expensive it is to transport there, and they’d rather see us out an extra day than not. Hunting is a way of life in rural communities, it provides jobs, funds community initiatives, and draws in people from all walks of life.

Regardless of your views on the ACTUAL sport - folk really need to realise it’s not the toff sport of yesteryear and stop throwing down the class card.

This is a horrible post.
What are you trying to prove? That human cruelty creates jobs? Do we not know that already? From weapons industry to the toppling of regimes abroad, what do you think has been keeping this country going for the last few centuries while others, the manipulated ones, succumb? How long will it take to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan? How many jobs those wars created and maintained here? Should we keep on doing that?
You are an apologist at best. Nothing else.

Totickleamockingbird · 15/09/2020 10:47

@Vieve1325
It is NOT a sport FFS. Stop using that word. How bullied will you feel if I drop you in a jungle, weapons-less and tiny, and then hunt you down with a gun? Ever sat down to try and imagine being at the receiving end of the bullet? Try it.

Totickleamockingbird · 15/09/2020 10:49

Also, if your need for validation and acceptance coincides with hunting animals, you must see a psychiatrist.

Amber0685 · 15/09/2020 10:51

Shoot lunches in pubs are cancelled though.

How sick at heart you have to be to count animal killing as a day out?

Because, if you are going to end up on somebody's plate, being humanely shot after a life in the wild doesn't seem too bad an end compared to the alternatives?

Of course there may be many arguments against grouse shooting, but as I said, I know nothing about grouse shooting.

merrymouse · 15/09/2020 10:55

Sorry - that last post accidentally quoted Clavinova!

merrymouse · 15/09/2020 10:56

Ever sat down to try and imagine being at the receiving end of the bullet? Try it.

This is an argument for vegetarianism, not an argument against hunting.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 15/09/2020 10:57

My sister is toying with the idea of dressing her smallest grandchild up as a grouse and giving the other 5 water pistols to chase them with. "No officer they're on a grouse shoot...perfectly legal according to Boris."

You appear to be bullying most of the posters on this thread without a gun.

No they won't. Same as eggs from caged hens taste like shit.

So killing animals at a slaughter house is OK and killing animals in the wild is unacceptable?

Hypocrite.

Unless you're vegan you have fuck all argument about how an animal is killed.
