So if poor people want to meet their extended families could they just club together to hire some land and claim they are chasing foxes followed by a nice pub lunch after? Would they be fined?

Is hiking a sport then?
It takes skill and ability. The more you do it, the better you get at it.

Or is it just an outdoor activity?

What's the difference?

Hunting should be banned anyway so yanbu

@Tellmetruth4

Supporters are claiming hunting is a sport because they want it be. However, it doesn’t meet the textbook definition of sport.

In what way does it not meet the definition of sport?

I don't agree with hunting but it's a sport and allowed.
Just like the dance classes I run are a sport and allowed 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Gobbycop

Hahaha good old guardian whipping up class wars.

Wankers.

It's also in the Daily Mail

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8733867/Grouse-shooting-list-sports-exempt-Rule-Six.html

Why did they pick on that in their headline as well?

Are they trying to start a class war?
Some of the responses here speak volumes because it was in The Guardian - except the DM did EXACTLY the same thing.

Yep, the DM are wankers also. Along with every other trash tabloid.

No idea why people use them for their news.

I'm really surprised that fencing isn't on the approved list - it's essentially individual, you only get close to the other fencer whilst you're trying to stab them, and you wear a mask anyhow.

It's interesting that:

a) The headline is that grouse sporting has been included - even though many sports and activities are included but that's the one that gets the headline so people get annoyed by that

b) Even though many papers reported the same thing, it's the Guardian that is being 'picked on' for reporting it.

It's the same thing. Even though many things are 'included' or many papers 'report it' - just highlight one narrow example to get people to froth at the mouth and get angry and to divide people.

It never fails to surprise me just how ignorant of country sports people can be whilst still holding terribly strong views about how vile it all is. The lack of understanding of the industry under discussion on this thread is embarrassing.

The Guardian is being 'picked on' because it's the article that the opening post was about.

If OP had used a different one, I expect that would be the version which was predominant on the thread

Agree

I think the economy is in precarious enough a state without putting restrictions on events for any reasons other than Covid safety.

Whether hunting and shooting should be legal is a different issue, and not a reason to treat differently icw pandemic rules

There is NO excuse for killing for fun. None whatsoever.

Report
Florin · 15/09/2020 08:05

@Pobblebonk obviously not but how they cul them is they find them, pick which of the herd they think they need to cul to keep the herd balanced and shoot them. In my opinion that is hunting.

@pandafunfactory

Agreed.

I personally don't shoot pheasants or grouse but do pest control like pigeon and rabbit shooting.

The first thing people say in relation to game shooting is normally toffs or something relating to class.

I know for a fact there are people from all walks of life from every possible job that are involved in game shooting.

That doesn't fit the narrative though does it.

This is not killing for fun - it is killing for food. Have you tried grouse and pheasant? They are very tasty.

Florin · 15/09/2020 08:11

@tarasharp we eat everything dh shoots, we even do craft activities with the feathers with our ds and the dogs get the bits we don’t want to eat so is it ok if he goes off shooting then?

Probably Will and Kate demanded it - anything they want is government policy now since Boris "stole" their private secretary.

What's so wrong about not liking hunting for the sake of it? What's wrong about not liking people taking pleasure in killing innocent animals for sport? What's ignorant about doing research on animal issues for YEARS? What's silly about having a problem with people illegally shooting endangered animals under the guise of shooting legal ones?

First reported in Huffington post and then the Times.....Metro, sun, Mail, Mirror and the Guardian

Many sports require some sort of licence to compete but don't do to "train"

You need a licence to hold a shotgun licence not a licence to shoot birds like pigeons pheasants & Grouse or even rabbits, these are paid for events.

So why should shooting be exempt but i can't meet up with my club for training runs of more than 6?

Or is about providing privilege to the landowners (usually Tory backers) who run very profitable businesses running Grouse & Pheasant shoots?

Report
merrymouse · 15/09/2020 08:16

Whether or not you think grouse shooting should be legal, it is at the moment legal, therefore it is included in the list of organised sports that allow groups larger than 6.

If they had exempted grouse shooting from the list the papers would have been full of Nigel Farage et al complaining that the government were randomly targeting sports on ideological grounds.

On the face of it allowing sport may seem trivial, but many, many people's livelihoods depend on sport.

@MagicSummer

The group of hunters near where I used to live definitely shoot for fun. That is the kind of hunting that I cannot stand.

@Florin

There is a difference between culling and sport hunting. I know people who shoot deer to control overpopulation. They go home and cry afterwards. They don't laugh and joke about it in the pub.

Def killing for fun, Pheasants are driven to the 'guns where they are gunned down, by rows of twats with 12 bores, the birds have zero guile as they have been breed in pens.

Many fly off winged and die of infection/starvation

Disgusting "hobby"

Maybe because people usually fence in pairs?

Tennis isn't on the list either.
