To think that if you are high risk you should prob not be on the bus?

Prepared to get lynched here but i get the bus to hospital placement every day. There is a young man on bus who normally wears a mask. Today he wasn't. He forgot.
A woman on the bus kicked off at him massively as she has cancer. Yes i do sympathise with her but if I had cancer I wouldnt be travelling by bus. Id go to chemo by taxi. The risk is just too great atm.
He should have worn a mask but she should be protecting herself. My mum died of cancer so I know how hard it us.

What this thread highlights is why it is important for those of us who can take measures like mask wearing to do so in order to help those who are vulnerable for whatever reason. Not criticising them for trying to access healthcare!

jojobar · 14/09/2020 08:06

She probably can't afford a taxi. Is that so hard to imagine?

I worked with a lady who came into work every day after her chemo sessions as she had used up her sick pay entitlement (15 days per rolling year) and couldn't afford time off unpaid. Thankfully she went on to make a full recovery.

Rosehip10 · 14/09/2020 08:06

You know, people who have cancer often have money issues depending on their job etc? As a trainee healthcare worker (presumably as you are on placement) you should hang your head in shame with your attitude.

PoppyFleur · 14/09/2020 08:07

OP your arguments are so vacuous and far from reality that it’s not even worth countering them. Suffice to say it must be bliss to be this ignorant.

Let’s hope one day we have a compassion vaccine. It’s clear some people really need it.

lljkk · 14/09/2020 08:09

She's allowed to make a choice to be on bus but she shouldn't kick off at him.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 14/09/2020 08:10

@malificent7

I know the taxi is expensive..But for the sake of my health then I would pay. I know I sound like an arse here but she genuinely sounded terrified...I just couldn't do it to myself ...and I am a skint student. Kids under 11 don't have to wear masks and there may be loads of them on the bus.
Yes, you do sound like an arse.
pastandpresent · 14/09/2020 08:11

I really don't get you, OP. Yes, you would pay. You are in the position to be able to pay if you wanted to. But not everyone else is in that same situation. You must be able to see that.

Spanielmadness · 14/09/2020 08:11

When I was on universal credit, unexpectedly due to a sudden, intensely painful condition, it didn’t even cover my loan repayments and my credit card bill. Let alone food, council tax, water, electric, oil, car insurance, phone bill, dog insurance and sundries.
How on earth do you think she would have money for a taxi when she literally couldn’t cover basics......I would imagine even the bus fare seems extortionate if she can’t work.

Illdealwithitinaminute · 14/09/2020 08:12

Regarding hospital transport, a lot of the volunteer drivers will be older people themselves so shielding.

You are really lacking in imagination here- do you think the lady with cancer going to horrible treatments which make her sick wants to travel by bus?

Emeraldshamrock · 14/09/2020 08:13

This thread is typical "Let them eat brioche cake"
Silly sick woman getting the bus what was she thinking not ordering a taxi? Wink

lucieinthesky · 14/09/2020 08:13

I would re-think that hospital placement OP.

The cost of a taxi once could be this woman’s entire food budget for a week. It may be that if “for the sake of her health she paid” then her health might suffer her not eating all week.

Never judge the poverty others might be in. You might be a skint student. But you might have 10 x the money she has.

And what would you pay with if you didn't have money? Come on, use your damn head!
DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 14/09/2020 08:21

I currently have cancer.

I am off work so my income is already down by around a grand a month.

A taxi to the hospital I need to go to would cost £90, the bus costs £15.

All very well and good saying "if I was at risk I would pay for a taxi for the sake of my health", in reality that taxi, for me, would mean not being able to feed my kids.

Stripedarmchair · 14/09/2020 08:22

Going by the state of some of the taxis round here, it would be just as germ ridden to get a taxi even if she could afford it. If the man forgot his mask and he isn’t exempt, he shouldn’t have been allowed on the bus. Even if masks aren’t magic, the rules are clear that forgetting isn’t an excuse.

Emeraldshamrock · 14/09/2020 08:23

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult I'm sorry I hope you get well soon. BrewCake

Angelina82 · 14/09/2020 08:24

So this poor woman’s supposed to pull money out of of her fucking arse for a taxi because dumb fuckers can’t remember to wear their mask. Christ, talk about victim blaming!

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 14/09/2020 08:25

My dad often spent two hours each way A DAY in packed traffic to get to his radiotherapy. Every fucking day. And he was in a car driven by his wife. Even if he had been eligible for patient transport to the hospital they pick you up when they can, as long as it is before your appointment time. So you could easily be waiting a few hours for your 15 minute radiotherapy appointment and a few hours after to be taken home. It's not a fucking Private chauffeur at your beck and call. Many cancer patients are in the process of dying. Their life being cut short. Do you think for one moment they should spend every day waiting round a hospital waiting room?!

I'm actually astounded at some people's fucking ignorance!

OhCaptain · 14/09/2020 08:25

@malificent7 do the world a favour and change careers.

I am 100% serious.

You clearly do not have the intelligence, emotional and otherwise, to be in any sort of medical profession.

I mean that with absolute sincerity. You shouldn’t be anywhere near people who require care than needs intelligence, morality, empathy, and basic human decency.

dottiedodah · 14/09/2020 08:25

Its very stressful to have to worry about transport when you are seriously ill! Taxis are very expensive and the bus is cheap and easily accessible for everyone .Sorry, but saying he "forgot" his mask in a major pandemic really doesnt wash! ,Well done to this lady ,she has enough to worry about without some selfish wanker to boot! I keep my mask in my bag and a spare one for DH as well .DH keeps his own one in his jeans pocket.Absolutely no sodding excuses ! Also why was Bus driver letting him on without a mask?

Lexilooo · 14/09/2020 08:27

Bus and Train companies could make some extra profit by carrying a supply of masks to sell to those who forget.

Lets face it, it is relatively easy to forget and if someone is on their way to work going back could make them very late. Obviously they should go back but you can see why someone might chance it.

Roselilly36 · 14/09/2020 08:28

My local hospital arranges hospital cars to take Cancer patients for Treatments as they do not recommend for cancer patients to travel n public transport, due to infection risk. Perhaps this lady has not been offered this and is doing her best. Not everyone has family who can help or cash for cabs etc.

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 14/09/2020 08:30

God I hope your placement at the hospital is as a fucking cleaner and not someone who has anything to do with actual people.

Brighterthansunflowers · 14/09/2020 08:30

YABU

The man who forgot the mask shouldn’t have got on the bus “forgot” is not one of the reasons people are exempt from wearing masks (neither is “can’t be arsed” or “don’t like them”)

And as everyone has said, not everyone has the option of taxis regularly. The lady with cancer had more of a right to be on the bus than the man, since he was choosing not to follow the rules required to travel on the bus

housemdwaswrong · 14/09/2020 08:30

It would cost me £40 to get a return taxi. He shouldn't have been on the bus.
