To call my baby this

m0mmy2be · 12/09/2020 08:29

So we decided this name in September 2017. We had been trying for a baby for a while and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.

Anyway, we have since found out we are having a baby girl and I am due very soon.

We decided to call her Cove.

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

I'm not too worried about people liking the name personally, but more worried about whether she'll be teased in future because of its association with Covid? Am I over thinking?

My mind actually didn't go straight to Covid. It's an unusual name and I thought.of old sailor types in novels calling one another 'you old cove.' No idea what it means x

Peridot1 · 12/09/2020 10:43

Glad you have changed your mind!

Cleo is a lovely name and would be a connection to your grandmother.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 12/09/2020 10:43

Sorry, missed your latest!

Evelyn is lovely and you can still have Evie as a short form of it.

Juniper - well the plant itself is quite prickly and it would get shortened to Juney or similar, which may be ok with you but I wouldn't like it.

cdtaylornats · 12/09/2020 10:44

Cove is a name of a village in Hampshire now subsumed by Farnborough.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 12/09/2020 10:45

Juniper is a really beautiful name, the one I know gets called June or Junie

Cleo (whether as a full name or as a nickname for Cleopatra) is also lovely

DragonPie · 12/09/2020 10:45

Call her Cleo, I love this.

Elmo230885 · 12/09/2020 10:46

Why not just use Cleo as the first name? Its honours your grandmother and heritage; and its actually a name.

"Names" like Clove set a child up for a lifetimes of eye rolls, not being taken seriously and having to constantly spell the name out because people don't believe someone could call their child Cove.
Also Cove Cleopatra sounds like a generated pornstar name from one of those ' take your street name and pets name' posts!

jessstan2 · 12/09/2020 10:46

Evelyn is lovely, it means 'wished for child'. Evie is just a diminutive; it's fashionable in some quarters to just give a child a diminutive nowadays but far better to give a full name which can be shortened to a nickname.

Juniper is alright if you don't mind your child named after a berry. It is used to flavour gin, juniper oil is detoxifying working on kidneys and alimentary canal (people used to take it mixed with sugar to bring on an abortion but that's another story).

Georgyporky · 12/09/2020 10:46

Cove is a word for a man.

Peridot1 · 12/09/2020 10:46

Evelyn is lovely out of your other ideas. Juniper is nice too. What about Juno? I love Evie too but think it’s fairly popular but if that doesn’t bother you it’s a really pretty name. Or just Eve. Although there is Killing Eve which might make it more or less popular.

nanbread · 12/09/2020 10:47

I'd go for Cleo, or Juno instead of Juniper. Or even Coco.

There are a million Evie's but if that doesn't bother you, go for it.

Cove isn't a great name at the best of times.

nanbread · 12/09/2020 10:48

I know it's a brand of margarine but I actually quite like Clover which is similar

OldEvilOwl · 12/09/2020 10:48

No!

Both of my grandparents were called Evelyn and they both hated it,

Brownthomas13 · 12/09/2020 10:54

@m0mmy2be I love both names!

Cove is a really pretty girls name - the pandemic will be over by the time she starts school.
I also LOVE cleopatra. I am jealous that you have a family reason to call your daughter that. Would you consider it as the first name as it sounds so beautiful said out loud?

My daughter has an unusual name. Trust your instincts.

In a world full of amelias, be a Cleopatra!!!

IndiaMay · 12/09/2020 10:58

I don't mind Cove but unfortunately I think there would be jokes about her being conceived during Covid.

Cleo and Juniper are nice but you cant go from Cove (a sweet, unusual name) to Evelyn/Evie (one of the most popular and over used names in the UK) it would be such a shame!

littleblackno · 12/09/2020 11:00

I like it, she wont be bullied at school for it as in 5 years time those kids wont connect it to Covid- if indeed they know the word by then.

I wanted to call my son a name that was not particularly common, I had chosen it years before I conceived, but due to someone in the news at the time for negative reasons when I was pregnant i went off it.
My son is now 14 and noone would ever connect the two for the time he was born i dont think so I do wish I had stuck with it (although seems strange to imagine DS with a different name now!).

bellinique · 12/09/2020 11:02

How about calling her Cleopatra as her first name but shortening it to Cleo day to day?

TempestHayes · 12/09/2020 11:03

Cove? Like, what, a beach? It's also an older word meaning "fellow". Weird choice for a name.

And yes, thanks to 2020 your baby has been saved from a lifetime of sighing and saying "yeah, er, my mum liked beaches or something."

ZoeTurtle · 12/09/2020 11:09

Ffs give your kid a proper name. She's not a doll or a puppy.

Purplepixiedust · 12/09/2020 11:10

@Violetroselily

My first thought was Gove, rather than Covid. Equally bad.
Me too.
Erinbeth02 · 12/09/2020 11:14

I like the name and didn't link it to covid. When I was expecting my son I wanted to call him Luca, people told me it was awful so I ended up going with Lucas.

12 years later I still wish I had gone with Luca.

Choose the name YOU want 💗

Butchyrestingface · 12/09/2020 11:19

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

Now that you mention it...

I hope your surname doesn't begin with D?

BluePeterVag · 12/09/2020 11:20

Go for it!

I am of the opinion all babies need to be called Dave. Boy or girl. Everyone knows a Dave but newborn name trends aren’t keeping up. What will happen when the world runs out of Daves?#SaveTheDaves.
