To call my baby this

So we decided this name in September 2017. We had been trying for a baby for a while and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.

Anyway, we have since found out we are having a baby girl and I am due very soon.

We decided to call her Cove.

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

I'm not too worried about people liking the name personally, but more worried about whether she'll be teased in future because of its association with Covid? Am I over thinking?

I wouldn't.

m0mmy2be · 12/09/2020 10:27

@Polnm

Cleopatra isn’t an Egyptian name. It is the equivalent of calling g a child Boudicca and saying that commemorates your grandparents heritage
My granny's first name is Cleopatra.

@Toddlerteaplease

I thought Cove is another word for criminal.
It is in old English and was much used in Australia. I found the meanings and posted on a previous page.

I do wonder what possesses people to think up these 'names' for their poor kids when there are plenty of perfectly nice, classic names which will never cause their child embarrassment at school.

I once met someone who called their daughter, 'Antimony', one meaning of which is 'poison'. Then there is 'Jade' which sounds perfectly pretty if you are thinking of the semi precious stone but also means a woman of ill repute. I do think some people do not look up meanings of names but it is important to do so; a child will be saddled with it for life.

Blackdog19 · 12/09/2020 10:28

I think Cleo is a sweet name. I’d go with that.

SacreBleeurgh · 12/09/2020 10:29

First I thought of was the use of the word to mean ‘man’. Which is unfortunate for a girl of any age... I agree with suggestions to consider using Cleo instead - it’s really lovely and a beautiful tribute to her great grandparent,

Palavah · 12/09/2020 10:29

Don't call her Cove

Clover?
Cora?
Cleo as a first name?

Even without Covid she'd get teased.

Why would you even think of it now?

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 12/09/2020 10:30

It's not a name, and yes covid. Would you want to go through life being called Cove? Confused

Stompythedinosaur · 12/09/2020 10:32

I really like Cove as a name, it has a nice sound. But I think that the covid association is too strong.

What about Dove? It has a similar cadence.

jessstan2 · 12/09/2020 10:32

Cleo is OK but Cleopatra a bit long winded for nowadays.

How about Charmian if you want to honour your granny?

Charmion alternatively Charmian, was a trusted servant and advisor to Cleopatra VII of Egypt.

That's quite a charming name, connected to Cleopatra.

So is Desiree, the name of Napoleon's first love.

You don't have to be 'different' though.

Helen and Helena are lovely.

Pronounced as doughv
Racinglikeapronow · 12/09/2020 10:34

My god. Cove Cleopatra the poor child.

If you want to have a unusual second name pick a normal first name.

m0mmy2be · 12/09/2020 10:35

Thank you for all the positive comments, even from those who do NOT like the name but have offered a valid reason why, it's been really helpful.

I have posted here today because I did have doubts even though I really like the name, and obviously don't want my child to be teased and so this has really helped.

Other options were Evelyn, Evie, Juniper.

Ps, there are a few Cove's out there, hence where I got the idea from, I didn't just make it up and she wasn't conceived in a Cove either Grin

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/09/2020 10:35

Thats a ridiculous name, never mind covid.

Thatbliddywoman · 12/09/2020 10:35

I associate it with 'The Cove' which is a horrific documentary film about our barbaric treatment of dolphins.

Middle name?
It's quite a harsh sounding word and people may want to pronounce it like 'Dove'. The covid thing wouldn't put me off if it was me though. It's not an association I'd personally make and I'm not sure kids at school in 5 years time will either.

Twisique · 12/09/2020 10:36

Can you have Cleopatra as the first name?

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 12/09/2020 10:37

You will face grief for it but she probably won’t. There could be a Covid 26 or whatever then though.

MJMG2015 · 12/09/2020 10:39

@PablosHoney

Not as bad as this
Jesus fucking Christ.

I appreciate the countries where certain names are not permitted to be registered. People like this need social services checking up on them and quite possibly babies being adopted out. They cannot be fit to be parents.

@m0mmy2be. Just don't. It's (IMO) a noun & I think noun names are daft at the best of times. But right now it's particularly bad. As for the poster that says 5 year olds won't tease her- do they think she's going to stay 5?

Honest to god, naming a child is a responsibility, it's not a bloody contest to see how quirky you can be!!

Aloethere · 12/09/2020 10:39

Fauve has the same sound as Cove but without the Covid connotations.

Thatbliddywoman · 12/09/2020 10:39

Not clove. Clove of garlic. Cloven hoof.. just nope.

happylittlechick · 12/09/2020 10:40

I'd like to point out that no baby girls have been called cove in England and Wales ever. Very very few boys.

MJMG2015 · 12/09/2020 10:40

Evie is the best pick from your list.

Juniper - expect her NN to be Gin🤣

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 12/09/2020 10:41

Cleopatra as a nod to your granny is a lovely thing to do, and Cleo is a lovely shortening of it.

But no to Cove. I'm not a fan of geographical features as names anyway, but I agree totally that people are going to assume it's because of Covid for at least the next couple of year.

I tend to agree that it would be a better idea to have a slightly less "out there" name as a first name with Cleopatra as a middle name.

BlueSuffragette · 12/09/2020 10:41

No to Cove or Juniper, child will get teased. I think that Evelyn cut short to Evie is the best of the options you've suggested so far.

MJMG2015 · 12/09/2020 10:42

Have you actually asked your granny how she feels about her name? I know a few grannies who have put their kids straight on NOT using their dreadful names!

Cleo OTOH is nice!
