To call my baby this

m0mmy2be · 12/09/2020 08:29

So we decided this name in September 2017. We had been trying for a baby for a while and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.

Anyway, we have since found out we are having a baby girl and I am due very soon.

We decided to call her Cove.

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

I'm not too worried about people liking the name personally, but more worried about whether she'll be teased in future because of its association with Covid? Am I over thinking?

Might as well get the thread deleted.

@m0mmy2be

Update:

I know most, if not all, will think I'm a terrible mum for having made this decision, but we met our princess not even 24hrs ago and as soon as I saw her, I knew it was the right thing to do.

I love her name and I love her.

Thanks for everyone's input and advice Star

Looks like the sign says 'Love' and this is all a windup.

I hope for the child's sake that it is!

DrDetriment · 13/09/2020 18:47

Really hope this is a wind up. Otherwise, all I can say is poor little Cove Cleopatra.

claireyjs · 13/09/2020 18:53

Poor kid... she will get called Covid for sure at school 🤣🤣

pigsDOfly · 13/09/2020 18:53

Yeah that thing, whatever it is, that is being held up says 'love' not Cove.

That's a fancy lower case 'l' not a capital 'C'.

Yeah, a wind up.

MadMadaMim · 13/09/2020 18:53

Congratulations on the new arrival.

Any other year, I'd think call your child whatever you like and forget everyone else. This year though - if say definitely no. Also, I'd ve more worried about it sounding very like Gove. Terrible association.

Maybe you /she will rethink and call her Cleo. Or Patra. Both are kinder than Cove.

If I met someone who had a baby this year and called her Cove - I'd think how unimaginative and cruel it was. You're going to spend the next 5-10 years introducing her as 'this is Cove - and the name was chose before the pandemic'.

First impressions count and last.

Having said all that - welcome to Cove x

TeaChocKitKat · 13/09/2020 18:56

Did you already have the wooden plaque? This all happened very quickly otherwise...Hmm

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/09/2020 18:58

Happened to another poster, refusing a test before going into hospital. She had a baby the day after too.

spacewitch99 · 13/09/2020 19:07

Cove is used as a word for ‘friend’ in the Hebridean Isles.
Random fact.

Giraffey1 · 13/09/2020 19:13

Never heard of it as a name. It’s a place by the sea for me, or a derogatory term for someone. And yes it is way too close to COVID. I think it’s not a good idea.

Estheryan07 · 13/09/2020 19:17

At least it’s not Quarentina

Stonerosie67 · 13/09/2020 19:19

A cove is an old fashioned term for a unpleasant person....very Agatha Christie.

And what a ridiculous name to inflict upon a child... I too call bullshit!

Estheryan07 · 13/09/2020 19:24

Or lockie 😆

Retired65 · 13/09/2020 19:24

I would change the name if I was you. I think she would get teased with a name like that.

Pliudev · 13/09/2020 19:27

I once met a man whose parents had named him Hyacinth. He'd spent his life trying to explain it. Don't do it.

GOING AGAINST THE TIDE HERE
I think it would be fine.
Children have no concept of history! As a child I wouldn’t have thought “oh that kid was born during Covid”, I’d have had no concept of the timing of their birth.

Yes other parents may have negative opinions but they will keep them to themselves unless they’re absolute twonks.

It has a lovely connotation of a peaceful seaside cove.

Devora13 · 13/09/2020 19:30

I assume someone has mentioned this already, but...

noun A man; a person; a fellow: generally preceded by some adjective: as, an old cove; a rum cove; a flash cove, etc.

Welshmaenad · 13/09/2020 19:31

My first thought was actually the film that exposes the bloody and brutal hacking up of dolphins in Japan. Is that...better for you?

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 13/09/2020 19:35

Sorry didn’t RTFT
Congratulations OP

MyMorningHairHasItsOwnVlog · 13/09/2020 19:38

I would immediately associate it and 2020 will go down in history, so it’s not likely to be forgotten.

How about Clover? It’s just two more letters and is very pretty.

carly2803 · 13/09/2020 19:39

Cov-id/cove

awful name under normal circumstances. Horrific name now.

don't do that to your child!!

HoldTightandPretenditsaPlan · 13/09/2020 20:01

What about Ruby, Lily, Jade, Daisy, Robin etc?

cuckooplusone · 13/09/2020 20:04

Like Devora, I would use cove as a synonym for “geezer” or “bloke”, from old London thieves cant (read too many Georgette Heyer books). Sorry, not something I could use as a girl’s name due to this. However, there are loads of other names I wouldn’t use either (like Bronte) - so don’t worry what I think!

Congratulations

I’m so glad you did and I’m so sorry people are so downright horrible and rude. I can’t abide judgemental people and this thread is actually disgusting. 😕 it’s a shame people are so narrow minded. It’s a beautiful name and I’m a little jealous actually that I didn’t think of it 😂👍🏼 Maybe if I ever persuade my partner to have another x
