To call my baby this

So we decided this name in September 2017. We had been trying for a baby for a while and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.

Anyway, we have since found out we are having a baby girl and I am due very soon.

We decided to call her Cove.

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

I'm not too worried about people liking the name personally, but more worried about whether she'll be teased in future because of its association with Covid? Am I over thinking?

There are so many lovely and unusual names out there so you don’t have to use a really ‘out there’ name like Cove that will blight your child’s life.

Evelyn nickname Evie is a nice suggestion. Go with that one. :)

Monkeynuts18 · 12/09/2020 12:02

I didn’t immediately think ‘Covid’... but I did think ‘Clove’, ‘Coven’ (like a coven of witches) and ‘Gove’.

Evelyn is gorgeous though.

I do agree that obviously it is your baby and your choice... but equally I think it’s really important when naming your child to remember he or she is much more than just your baby. She’s going to grow up into a woman. Who will need to go to school. Apply for jobs. Make hotel and dinner reservations. Give presentations. And use her name for all those things and many many more.

Fallingdark · 12/09/2020 12:03

So, even worse...

I have a Covey, born in 2019! Pronounced ‘Cove-we’ too, not ‘Cuvvey’ as is more common. We call her Cove sometimes, and Coves.

I’ve only had comments from a few close friends, but am the first to admit it’s perhaps a little unfortunate now. Maybe people just don’t like to comment though.

I’ve had a few wobbles about it, but lockdown has been one of the hardest times of my life and I loved it when I chose it. I’m reluctant to let Covid ruin anything else for me.

Please don’t put off uncommon name choices by anybody. They won’t be to everybody’s taste, but that’s why there are so many names, more than enough to suit everybody!

Cove is also definitely a definitely a real name, though I’m not sure I’d recommend it right now.

Fallingdark · 12/09/2020 12:03

Er. Pronounced ‘Cove-ee’. Silly autocorrect.

tara66 · 12/09/2020 12:05

Hate it. Why?? There are so many decent names to choose from.

Ginkypig · 12/09/2020 12:09

To be honest I can imagine a scenario where as teens they are all in a classroom being taught about covid as part of a history class or it being mentioned in biology when learning about viruses or something and one cf kid in the class working out cove was born at the same time as covid and thinking he is so hilarious at getting all the kids to call her covid as her nickname from then on.

Fink · 12/09/2020 12:10

Cove as in the slang word for a boy or man?! Event without the covid associations that sounds like an odd choice for a girl. Equally Juniper. I know three Junipers personally (2 American, 1 Brit with American heritage) and know of a few others, and all are men. Named after Junípero Serra. Insofar as it's a name in English at all (which isn't very far, and mainly limited to American Catholics, and even then been tainted by the more recent furore over treatment of Native Americans), it's definitely a boy's name.

Evie and Evelyn are both standard names. I don't particularly like them but they're a million times better than random nouns repurposed as names.

@Aloethere 'Fauve' is the French word for a wild beast. It's not a great connotation.

Ginkypig · 12/09/2020 12:15

As for Cleopatra that's a family name and everyone on here should keep shut about it!

My opinion on cove is irrelevant my last post was just because I know from my own experience at school that you always get one (clever) twat in your year and It would be hard for her to end up with a nickname like that.

goldensummerhouse · 12/09/2020 12:15

Calling a person a cove historically meant crook or swindler. I saw it mentioned on a historical drama. Along with the Covid associations, I think it's one to avoid.

Derbee · 12/09/2020 12:16

😂 this has got to be a piss take.

LovelyLovelyMe · 12/09/2020 12:18

@CaptainAthena

May I suggest Balonz? Beautiful name
How would that be pronounced? Baloney?

How about Baluxz? I believe that's pronounced bollocks and is a very pretty and, most importantly, an unusual name.

Grobagsforever · 12/09/2020 12:19

It's not a name. Children deserve proper names, not to be repositories for parental whims. Don't do it OP

Joeyandpacey · 12/09/2020 12:20

It’s a lovely name and doesn’t remotely remind me of covid.

Idontlikeyoghurt · 12/09/2020 12:20

Sorry ,don't call her Cove.

BreatheAndFocus · 12/09/2020 12:23

I knew a girl called Juniper years ago. I don’t think it’s “definitely a boys name”. I see it as suitable for a boy or a girl. I like it.

As for Cove, I’m not so keen - sorry. If someone announced that as a name now, I’d think of Covid immediately or think I’d misheard them. But I mainly think of “old cove” as in “old man”. If you’re after a seaside type name, I prefer Bay (and can be Bay as in harbour, or as in the herb).

If you’re having doubts, listen to them. But don’t just settle for your ‘second choice’. Why not go back to the drawing board and have a fresh think, opening your mind to other options, and then draw up a new longer shortlist and narrow it down.

iano · 12/09/2020 12:26

I like juniper or Evelyn
Not a huge fan of cove. Tbh my mind sort of went to covid. Its sad for you though. Could you have two middle names cove and cleopatra? That way you've still used the name.

1forAll74 · 12/09/2020 12:26

It sounds odd for a baby name, especially a girls name.

Polnm · 12/09/2020 12:29

@MusicWithRocksIn1t

Juniper Cleo sounds lovely to me.

I gave my kids very normal names because they are functional and I liked them but I do actually like Cove but agree its probably a bad call right now.

Both my children have a grandparents name as a middle name but again they are quite plain names (think Jane and John).
I'm expecting my 3rd baby and want to incorporate my grandmothers name in some way but I really don't like the name (Patricia) if its a boy I think Pat would be OK as a middle name though. My sister suggested Cia as a middle name for a girl which my gran actually preferred to her name.

Maybe your gran would be OK with Cleo if you say we named her Cleo after you.

Juniper cleo sounds like an artisan gin
pepperpod28 · 12/09/2020 12:33

Do you have any Irish connections OP? There is an Irish girl's name Cobhla, pronounced cov-la (short o, so it's not said like cove-la or cove-id if you see what I mean) could be an alternative for you maybe?

Pemba · 12/09/2020 12:36

Not a name! Please don't OP. As pps have said, it's a bit of coastline similar to 'bay', old fashioned dodgy geezer and now of course the Covid-19 association.

I quite like Cleopatra, and I think it's use able, particularly with your family connection. Does no one else remember the late 90s girl group Cleopatra (coming at ya!)? They also had a kids TV show. I think it's a powerful name, plus 'Cleo' is pretty.

I also like your other selections of Juniper, Evelyn or Evie. The latter two are very popular of course. Actually Evie is a bit cutesy as a stand alone name, better as a diminutive of Evelyn, Eve or Eva.

CatSmith · 12/09/2020 12:54

Tbh, I’d have inwardly eyerolled at a child called Cove even if there hadn’t been a COVID outbreak. It’s not a name, no more than Cave or Beach is a name!

Durgasarrow · 12/09/2020 12:58

weird

blunderbird · 12/09/2020 13:02

Clover?

LittleTiger007 · 12/09/2020 13:04

If you like it then use it. Ignore other people. When a person likes or loves another person they will come to love the name as they will associate it with the person who bears the name.
But always really research an unusual name and find all the meanings and check that that sits well with you.

To call my baby this
BeTheHokeyMan · 12/09/2020 13:05

Cleo by itself would be a beautiful name
