I work in the charity sector and think I'm ok for at least 12 months, although another department of the same organisation will be making redundancies soon.

My mate is in the pharmaceutical sector and they're going to be hit quite hard soon too.

How safe do you think your job is?

I had two jobs .

Contract ended in the higher education job due to Covid . Thought this was very secure .

Teaching job hopefully secure but part of it is on fixed term , so you just never know .

Fartleking · 11/09/2020 23:23

Russell Group University employee here, doing admin. Very secure at the moment, we're so busy our heads are spinning. This may not be the case in 1 year's time but I feel positive I'll be OK. My role is pretty vital.
DH, on the other hand, works in pensions and life assurance. They're about to do a massive restructure and we're sweating. He earns 5 times my salary so it would be devastating if he was made redundant.

Sideorderofchips · 11/09/2020 23:28

@mrssnitchnose

Algal balls are crap 😂😂 there's two of us covering all three sciences. I love my job

MrsSnitchnose · 11/09/2020 23:35

@Sideorderofchips I love them and mine always work. Apparently I'm the first technician they've had that has got them to work. I grow it myself over the Summer. I love my job too, only been doing it 3 years

lioncitygirl · 11/09/2020 23:40

My job is secure fo the next 5-7 years at least, as its very project specific. We havent got a hiring freeze at all and as a company, we are doing very very well so i am not worried. No furlough or redundancies either.

HowFastIsTooFast · 11/09/2020 23:47

I work in travel so hanging on by a thread really.

Thankfully DPs job has only been positively affected by the pandemic, if anything. More overtime than he knows what to do with.

StormBaby · 11/09/2020 23:52

Logistics and distribution for a large home furnishing retailer. We are about to hit peak three months early. Can’t get the products out quick enough. Company has very healthy finances, millions in the bank. They really looked after us through lockdown.

Caplin · 12/09/2020 00:00

At start of lockdown I was furloughed and told there probably wouldn’t be a role for me. That was stressful. I knew if I waited out furlough I would be hitting the market with everyone else.

I managed to land a 12 month mat cover contract, better pay, less hours. Great job. Also negotiated an exit deal from my old job which made everyone’s life easier. So overall I did well and paid off a huge chunk of debt.

I still worry about spring next year, but by then I’ll be better financially. There is a small chance I could get a different job with the company I’m with now and either get an extended contract or perm role....fingers. Tossed!!!

DawnAnn · 12/09/2020 00:31

I work in education and think my job is pretty secure. Working from home and lock down have resulted in me spending a lot less than I would normally. I have also had the opportunity to work overtime. I have therefore been saving as much as possible in the rain day fund just in case job security ever does become an issue.

TeeBee · 14/09/2020 19:25

I think some sectors of the pharma industry will be affected since many clinical trials have been paused/terminated because of COVID but others are soaring because of it. If you can shift your skill base to another sector, you should be okay.

lazylinguist · 14/09/2020 19:51

I'm a teacher. I work in multiple schools, a few of whom have ditched me due to buget/covid etc. However, I've signed up to do supply locally - I expect there will be lots of demand due to staff falling ill, self-isolating due to track and trace etc. Obviously supply is an ad hoc job rather than a stabke, contracted one, but I doubt I'll be short of work.

Animum2 · 14/09/2020 20:36

Our company has decided to relocate our division so from next month various departments are being made redundant, my department will be there until at least February and I'm already struggling just to get a reply from the many jobs I've applied for

carlukefair · 14/09/2020 20:43

Public sector, LA education teams. Not secure at all but not particularly COVID related. We seem to be 'restructured' ( staffing cuts) every 5 minutes. This government just don't want local authorities and huge public spending cuts really do take away services.

WetdreamBeliever · 14/09/2020 20:45

I suspect that many of the WFH roles will be very insecure. Even if the work is essential ( if there is such a thing) companies will get someone from India with perfect English and a PhD to do it for a fraction of the cost.

RunningFromInsanity · 14/09/2020 20:47

As long as people abuse animals I’m safe Angry

One of those jobs where I wish I wasn’t needed.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 14/09/2020 20:49

@QuestionableDanceMoves I hear you Sad Also in the travel industry, in account management for a cruise line. I still have a job unlike most of my peers in other companies but I'd be amazed if I still have it after Christmas.

MaryShelley1818 · 14/09/2020 20:51

I'm a Student Social Worker in a Children's Safeguarding Team so very secure sadly.

parallax80 · 14/09/2020 21:35

Intensive care physician.

No chance of going out of business any time soon.

HelplessProcrastinator · 14/09/2020 21:57

I work in the research department for a large NHS hospital. My job is very safe. We are so busy we are taking on staff. COVID trials have added to an already hectic workload.

TheDuchessofMalfy · 14/09/2020 22:01

I’m a civil servant working for a government agency. It’s an agency that’s likely to be inundated with work coming up - not predominantly in my area, but some of the extra work will likely affect us - so I’m thinking I’m ok.
