I work in the charity sector and think I'm ok for at least 12 months, although another department of the same organisation will be making redundancies soon.

My mate is in the pharmaceutical sector and they're going to be hit quite hard soon too.

How safe do you think your job is?

My post is secure until April. I'm part-time, and my hours were funded through 3 different projects. One of them came to an end, unexpectedly, at the end of June but they managed to find some money somewhere to cover the unfunded hours.

The organisation doesn't like having people in posts for less than 17 hours (which is what I do) and as a couple of other big projects are being recommissioned, but probably reduced, from next April, no-one knows wtf is going to happen. I suspect they will try and reallocate my funded hours among 2 colleagues who do less than f/t hours.

All of which may work out splendidly for me. I'm retiring at the end of July and have already told them this. If I get made redundant in April, my redundancy pay will be equal to my net pay for April-July, so I'll be no worse off but will retire 4 months earlier.

I'm in finance.
We've been told our jobs are secure but that in future they may slow down the recruiting eg if a person leaves the company, they may not be replaced.
No sign of that happening yet though, we have new joiners monthly

Meruem · 11/09/2020 18:18

I work in the criminal justice system. It’s been quieter during covid but my job is 99.9% secure. Crime is always going to be around! I sometimes regretted not working for the private sector and potentially earning more money but I realise now how much job security is worth.

tsmainsqueeze · 11/09/2020 18:22

Very secure , but i'm not complacent .

Confuzzlediddled · 11/09/2020 18:25

Waste water here, I've just doubled the size of my team so very secure!

Boulshired · 11/09/2020 18:30

Part time self employed and secure, DPs firm just made 30% redundant, it was clear it was going to be those the company furloughed so he know he was safe. It’s still been very miserable for him as some where good friends he’s known 15 years plus.

notcycling · 11/09/2020 18:35

Very secure, I have no worries.

EUnamechange · 11/09/2020 18:36

Civil Service, already swamped with Brexit work, now working on pandemic response too. Given we have a 25% vacancy rate and our skills are rare, we should be ok for a few years. I'm not looking forward to 5+ years time, another austerity budget to try to claw back, accusations of a bloated civil service etc.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 18:39

Lost my job already due to covid and haven't been able to get another one yet despite applying , recruitment ages say they have hardly anything as well and lots of redundancies around
Now dh job is up in the air due to a company re-structure he will find out next week if has a different job , the same one or not one at all

Notfeelinggreattoday · 11/09/2020 18:41

My friend has kept her job but had to take a 15 % pay cut

Ashdownstar · 11/09/2020 18:42

I'm a carer, so very secure. It's interesting to see what jobs seem secure and which are less so.

QuestionableDanceMoves · 11/09/2020 18:44

About as non secure as they come- travel industry, specialist destination with borders firmly shut
As a lone parent to 2 kids I am shitting myself as it’s not as simple as just finding another job- I need one that fits around the kids as there is literally only me to care for them. I am terrified for our future

isseywith4vampirecats · 11/09/2020 18:45

2 jobs one hospitality large chain restaurant managed to survive lockdown and furloughing but have said if theres another lockdown and they have to shut they wont open up again,
2nd job fundraising online for a cat charity so far my job is safe as long as they can stay operating and i can carry on raising money at the rate i currently do
am counting down the next two years to retirement so hopefully i will still have both of my jobs for those two years as at my age i wont get another job easily and OHS pension is above UC levels hes retired already

CatBatCat · 11/09/2020 18:45

Private mental health. Pretty secure. In fact my company has since recruited another 60 people since it started.

CeibaTree · 11/09/2020 18:50

My job and my husband's job are both pretty secure - maybe his slightly more than mine but I am confident that mine is going to be ok. We have always earned a bit less than some of our friends as we both have jobs we love rather than chasing the big bucks, but this seems like it will pay off long term as I know a fair few people whose jobs are sadly in jeopardy.

Sideorderofchips · 11/09/2020 18:51

Very secure as we are needed. I'm a secondary science tech

blue25 · 11/09/2020 18:52

Very secure.

miyhh · 11/09/2020 18:55

Omg! ameliajoan what do you do?

Bagadverts · 11/09/2020 18:56

Not secure, on government contract in charity sector has to be renewed every year. Very worried.

MadameBlobby · 11/09/2020 19:00

At the start of all this I was absolutely certain my job would be safe. It honestly never even crossed my mind I would lose my job as we were all so busy all the time.

7 weeks into lockdown I was let go. It was a complete shock.

Thankfully I have started somewhere else and I hope that will be secure but who knows.

wilde85 · 11/09/2020 19:01

I've just been made redundant. From a very well needed service to the vulnerable. It's heartbreaking

BetterEatCheese · 11/09/2020 19:18

I'm self employed and I'm very busy. I always feel pretty insecure when relying purely on self employment so this isn't much different for me

Babyroobs · 11/09/2020 19:23

Same here. I am funded by a large charity and they have renewed our contract until Dec 2021. I think they did this in anticipation of the massive financial impact that covid could potentially have on the type of patients we assist. However the charity is set to lose up to half of their fund raised income so I am not very optimistic of the longer term chances of staying employed. They are a charity who waste huge amounts of money ordinarily on constantly rebranding themselves and on complete non jobs, so maybe this will show them they need to have some decent restructuring for once. It's hard to know whether to look for other work or stick with the job I love even if I detest the funder/ charity.
Nogoodusername · 11/09/2020 19:26

Secure for the next 6 months, after that unsure - cut backs in my sector are inevitable in a recession.
DH was highly paid private sector - made redundant this month due to Covid financial pressures

Poppadumpony · 11/09/2020 19:30

I work in a local authority education team. I think I’m pretty secure. However in a situation where LAs had ti start cutting skilled central stagg, I’d be the first out.
So if things don’t get worse or only get a bit worse - I’m ok.
If things get a lot worse - I’m at risk.
