To ask you to help me find this teddy bear for DD

My DD (age 5) has had a teddy bear since she was born (was a gift from one of her aunts) and she absolutely loves it to death. Sleeps with it every night, runs to cuddle it when she is sad.

Unbeknown to me or DH she decided to put it in her schoolbag yesterday morning and take it to school. She got home from school and it was gone, no longer in her bag. She swears blind she left it in her bag all day but the last time she can remember seeing it is lunchtime yesterday.

She was in floods of tears yesterday afternoon, we retraced our steps all the way back to the school, looked in all the surrounding streets, I have posted on local groups and asked the school but no-one has seen it. We asked again at the school office this morning and still nothing. I have searched ebay and all the usual second hand sites I can think of but nothing is coming up.

So, AIBU to ask you to help me find a replacement bear, or should I use this as a life lesson for DD and not replace it?

Fantastic news Grin
In my experience the fact that it appeared mysteriously means it was taken by someone, found by a parent and forced to be put back. Most parents would fess up but there's always one who wouldn't want to be seen to have the child who took it.

shreddednips · 14/09/2020 20:28

Hurrah!!!!!!!!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 14/09/2020 20:36

what a lovely ending!!

we had special teddies etc that were never allowed to leave the house.

Ever.

Other toys could be taken out but never the sleeping, cuddly special ones.

Dutchesss · 14/09/2020 20:39

Great news, I'd love to know the scandal behind this. I wonder if a parent thought of selling it then realised too many people would know.

iklboo · 14/09/2020 20:40

Hurray for Teddy! I suspect she'd gone on a Teddy Bear's rave picnic for the weekend. Glad it's home safe & sound. I've never quite got over the loss of a dog running off with my favourite teddy when I was 7. I'm 51 now.

Apparentlystillchilled · 14/09/2020 21:08

I'm so pleased Teddy turned up! My DD is now 11 and her favourite cuddly went missing around that age and we luckily got it back after a sleepless night. Since then it has had her name stitched onto it and it has never left the house since (other than holidays). So pleased for your DD and for you!

@pinkcarpet

WE HAVE FOUND TEDDY!!!!

Cannot begin to tell you how relieved DD is. She came home from her childminder with the biggest smile on her face ever.

Seems like all the pestering people and posting pictures everywhere did it. Although it is rather mysterious as DD "found" teddy in her bag at the end of the day with no explanation and no idea how it got in there. Teddy will now be confined to the house for the rest of her days.

Absolutely brilliant! I'm so delighted for her. The thought of her going to give Ted a kiss in her break, and then Ted's disappearance had me feeling so sad for her. I kept checking the thread. Brilliant!

Yay 😁

Rach000 · 14/09/2020 22:13

So pleased she has it back! I just started reading this and was upset for her then read it is found.
Was going to say that it could have been at school but frustrating you cant go in at the moment to check. We are going to loose so much this year as last year in reception I check for cardigans etc at pick up or drop off a few times a week. Sometimes she had 3 in her tray she didnt bring home. In the first week back we are missing a water bottle and a cardigan!! Both with her name on. They may come back but I cant look so relying on a 5 year old isnt great. But at least they are not sentimental so not a big issue just a annoying.

m0mmy2be · 14/09/2020 22:17

Grin Welcome home Teddy x

NataliaOsipova · 14/09/2020 22:23

Oh - thank goodness. Agree - someone took it and didn’t want to own up to it. Not nice, really, but at least your DD has it back. And you can rest assured that she’ll comply with your advice to leave things at home next time....!

Tavannach · 14/09/2020 22:35

That's wonderful. I'm so glad for your DD.

ProudMarys · 14/09/2020 22:47

Aw so glad she found it. This bought back memories or me taking my favourite teddy at school as it was like a (show and tell thing that day) putting it down just for a second hanging up my coat (the coats hooks where in like a big clock room/hall which was shared with all classes and any way in a second it disappeared. I cried like a baby I must of been like 7 or 8 though Blush and remember feeling really embrassed about crying but so sad my first ever teddy was gone. Anyway the next day the mystery was solved. A girl who was a bit of a bully a year older had quickly picked it up and put in a bin by the side of my coat hook, she was showing off to a friend and a dinner lady overheard. I remember being called out of class to witness with this bully looking sad being made to fishing out my bear from the bin by the head master and been made to apologize and get detention for the rest of the week! I'm so pleased Teddy is back! Never let that bear out of the house again!

SE13Mummy · 14/09/2020 23:21

Fabulous news! I'm so glad Teddy found her way back to your DD's bag. Nothing like a pester and poster campaign to make a kidnapped bear too hot to handle!

LavaSpider · 14/09/2020 23:37

Well done. We had a similar experience at a similar age - precious teddy had got dropped on the street and taken home by someone. I put posters up and we did thankfully get him home after a few sleepless days.

Serious suggestion - sew a label into your bear's dress and write "If found please call 07xxx xxxxxx) on it - or even get a pet tag engraved with your number and put it onto a piece of elastic for the bear to wear round her neck whenever she leaves the house. It will save you a lot of hassle in future!

mummumumumumumumumumum · 15/09/2020 08:48

I am so happy to hear Teddy is back where she belongs. xx

pinkcarpet · 15/09/2020 09:46

I think I'll be sewing a GPS tracker onto teddy, no way is that bear ever leaving the house again! DD literally held her teddy the whole evening, she even had it sitting next to the bath and was fast asleep in about 10 minutes. We have put a thank you message on the school and sent a note to the teacher to thank her for helping look too.

I am intruiged to know where teddy went for 4 days but guess it will just be one of those unsolved mysteries of life! Just so glad to have it returned and to see DD's face smiling again.

I have a Vodafone tracker that I got free with an upgrade if you'd like it? Happy to pop it in the post for you.

It's either this one or very similar

So pleased you found Teddy. It's cute when kids have a favourite soft toy, but in reality it's just stressful constantly making sure they don't lose it! I speak from experience, we have had a couple of close calls with dc beloved bear, he's not allowed to leave the house now!

BletheringHeights · 15/09/2020 10:19

There’s a good Julia Donaldson book about a class bear that goes on a crazy series of journeys that she might like to inspire her about teddy’s adventures? The Everywhere Bear.

So pleased you got it back!

My son has a jellycat bunny he takes to nursery, it was the one he took when he was struggling to settle at 9 months old, they told me to sleep with it for a few nights then take it as a comfort item for naptimes. They said it seemed to help.

We panicked and immediately bought a spare whilst we still could, but fortunately he's happier with a muslin. Any one will do, and thankfully he likes them straight out of the wash!

SwanShaped · 15/09/2020 10:51

That’s amazing! Really weird way to find it though. Someone must have taken it and felt guilty.

CharityDingle · 15/09/2020 13:06

Can only imagine how excited and happy she was when teddy reappeared in her bag.

Cheetahfajita · 15/09/2020 23:10

Teddy will have gone home with someone, the child will have taken a shine to it.

Parent will have suddenly realised their little angel is a bit of a magpie and will have been embarrassed to return it.

The posters will have helped and you've got a good teacher there who knows not to make a fuss but to just return it.

I've been a teacher for a long time Wink
