I’m fat and I don’t care
I drink too much and I don’t care
I just don’t care

Im a lazy cow and I don’t care

I’m not depressed any more than anybody else is in this shitshow of 2020

So; which book jolted you out of inertia and into self care?
Because I need a massive kick up the arse ... I used to have so much willpower and it’s gone! and I still ... don’t care

I’ve got amazon at the ready.
HELP me oh Vipers!!

Alcohol lied to me by Craig Beck

bellinique · 10/09/2020 20:49

Not sure it's quite what you're looking for but A Thousand Splendid Suns made me realise how unbelievably lucky I am with my lot and how I should make the most of it.

toomanyspiderplants · 10/09/2020 20:50

You must care a bit..otherwise why post?

feel better in 5. dr chatterjee

LunaNorth · 10/09/2020 20:53

If you mean self-help, these were actually life-changing.

In no particular order...

The Alcohol Experiment by Annie Grace.
The Road Less Travelled by M.Scott Peck.
The Joy Diet by Martha Beck.
Warming The Stone Child by Clarissa Pinkola Estes.
Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes.

The Power of Now.

KrabbyPatties · 10/09/2020 20:58

Brilliant thankyou

When I say I drink too much, I haven’t got an alcohol problem but I normally drink a bottle of wine a week with my husband. In the past few weeks I’ve been having a drink every day. For lots of folk it’s normal but for me it’s just too much compared my my usual amount.

I’m greedy and hedonistic and probably a compulsive eater more than anything else

A Thousand Splendid Suns is truly humbling and harrowing. Meeting a really fit bloke was my inspo to sort my shit out, we're still at the eyeing each other up and having amazing sexual chemistry and at the early days of talking, but even if he turns out to be a non starter I'm forever grateful to him for kicking my fat arse into touch Grin

Body Positive Power by Megan Jayne Crabbe
Atomic Habits by James Clear
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson

I have read A LOT of self help, but these my faves from during lock down.

Gladgreengrass · 10/09/2020 21:08

Is a book the right tool?

How about some mindfulness? Makes you aware of the negative dialogue constantly running through our heads.

purplefig · 10/09/2020 21:11

Another vote for The Power of Now.

Egghead68 · 10/09/2020 21:12

I don’t think half a bottle of wine a week is going to kill you.

Egghead68 · 10/09/2020 21:14

Oh misread - a drink a day for a short period’s not going to kill you either.

stoneysongs · 10/09/2020 21:15

For over eating try Eating Less by Gillian Riley (it's a game changer)

LittleRa · 10/09/2020 21:15

@Egghead68 She said she normally shares a bottle of wine with husband across a week but recently this has changed and she is drinking more- every day, and feels this is too now much.

LittleRa · 10/09/2020 21:16

@Egghead68 Cross with your edit

Brain over binge - Kathryn Hansen. Having been a binge eater for over 20 years this book has given me hope.

MsStillwell · 10/09/2020 21:20

Four Pillar Plan by Dr Rangan Chatterjee.

RoseCaterpillar · 10/09/2020 21:21

Not a self help book, but the story in Eat Pray Love was so lovely (book is a million times better than the film) Also, some mindfulness like Headspace might help you feel more positive

SuddenArborealStop · 10/09/2020 21:28

Delay, don't deny, a guide to intermittent fasting.. I don't do self help books usually I started this to lose weight but got more energy and clarity and started to gradually change other aspects of my life without really trying, which is great cos I'm lazy. I can eat what I want but only during certain times of the day, which is great cos I'm greedy too

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 10/09/2020 21:37

God, a thousand splendid suns is harrowing. I’m not sure I could cope with reading it again now!

I don’t have any helpful book suggestions. I’ve been a bit like you food wise, but I’ve been doing C25K which has helped with counteracting that and getting into exercise.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 10/09/2020 21:38

I’m doing 16:8 too SuddenArborealStop

KrabbyPatties · 10/09/2020 21:40

@Egghead68

Yeah but it’s just symptomatic of how much I am indulging .... like even the booze is ramping up

Main problem is eating
Downloaded a book on willlppwer this morning and was scoffing toast before I eve finished the first chapter

I am suffering from entrenched sense of entitlement. If I want it, I have it.

So ridiculous at my age
