@Howslifenow

Do we know how many schools have been impacted till now?
Apparently 62

Individual closures yes, I think most schools will have the odd incidence of a bubble quarantining or even the whole school shutting for 2 weeks. But I don’t think we’ll go back to full lockdown again.

Eminybob · 07/09/2020 11:39

How, and why?

This country can not afford to keep children off school as this will mean parents staying off work.
Poverty and suicide as a result of job losses will be bigger killers than COVID could ever be.

Yes there have been an increase in confirmed cases, but that’s because more people are being tested. Many of the positive cases are symptom free. The virus isn’t any more deadly than it was.

That's not true. A higher proportion of people are testing positive It's not which is not surprising considering most things are open now. I think the country can afford to keep children off school as a fairly small portion of workers have primary school age children. I hope that schools don't close again but don't think it won't happen because it is possible.

How are symptom-free people accessing tests?

peacypops · 07/09/2020 12:18

My child has just been sent home this morning as case confirmed in his primary school. Whole year group bubble (90ish kids) and teachers have to self isolate for 2 weeks.

Just using us as an example - I've been unwell and have been tested and the tests were offered to all members of my household too - they don't have symptoms though so, were they to test positive, would be asymptomatic.
MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2020 12:20

God Peacy annoying.

One case isn’t meant to automatically send everyone home. But so many schools are doing it.

Is it up to schools though? I thought it was PHE who takes the decision to quarantine a bubble?
MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2020 12:23

ED it’s meant to be. No idea if they are even that fast.

But here school document states two it more cases then PHE notified

MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2020 12:23

Two or more

middleager · 07/09/2020 12:28

Echoing pps that this will involved local closures.
However, if staff become ill, what is the plan there?

UnaCorda · 07/09/2020 12:30

@louise4745

I have major anxiety issues and I hate change. I usually always have to know what's going on. Just a waiting game then.
But you won't know what's going to happen by asking a random bunch of mumsnetters what they "think" (i.e. guess). This is clear from the answers: yes, no, no, yes, no, yes...

(Sorry, these threads - asking a group of non-experts for their totally meaningless opinions on something about which they broadly have no specialist knowledge - really annoy me.)

Makes sense though. Many schools have a whole year bubble because of group work, lunch etc. Many posters have already stated teaching staff are attached to more than one class at primary.

This is what is on the gov website

Any members of staff who have helped someone with symptoms and any pupils who have been in close contact with them do not need to go home to self-isolate unless they develop symptoms themselves (in which case, they should arrange a test) or if the symptomatic person subsequently tests positive or they have been requested to do so by NHS Test and Trace.

It's under prevention. If parents haven't read it, please do so now and start making plans for when your child cannot go to school. For many schools, the "bubble" is 90+ people. Until rates start to drop, there will be disruptions.

MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2020 12:43

Can yes close contact can isolate. But a whole year this is unlikely? Maybe the class

Do PHE get involved?

Considering the shit advice they gave at the beginning of this academic I hope not. I would rather leave it to the head teachers.
mrpumblechook · 07/09/2020 12:46

academic epidemic!

MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2020 12:46

Tbh I doubt they have done given the speed of closures.

YenneferOfBattenberg · 07/09/2020 12:47

I really, really hope not.

Aragog · 07/09/2020 12:48

Individual classes/year groups - yes and it's already happening after less than a week of being back

Whole schools - in time, yes it's likely

Whole town /city - possibly in case if local lockdowns but will be last resort, and possibly only secondary

Whole country - unlikely regardless of what happens

How are you all coping if you have found news of positive case in your school

DonLewis · 07/09/2020 13:40

I've just had to pick my son up from school as one of the children in his year bubble has tested positive and PHE advised the school to send the whole bubble home. Late last night we had an email to say that the school was closed to year 8 for 2 weeks for the same reason. And my son said they were also sending year 10 home too.

3 days back at school and 3 years at home self isolating for 2 weeks.

Charliescar · 07/09/2020 13:49

I really hope not . It might be ok for younger kids at home , but definitely not older .

I think the kids have been hit hardest by the pandemic .

I'm sorry to hear that. Let's hope the schools procedures have worked and either no one else has been infected or that it is very mild.
