@GetThatHelmetOn, I know! It's infuriating. To be fair on us the opposition wasn't great either. It was a case of the lesser of two evils, or so we thought.

Are any of the reported schools Covid cases in central London? My child's school is located in London in very close walking proximity to a major transportation hub. Most families sensibly avoid mass public transport like the plague. The school is relatively relaxed (compared to others I know in the area) on Covid risk mitigation measures. I am both concerned for more UK Covid fatalities and savaging any resemblance of Christmas and new year festivities. I rather have a serious month of new emergency behavioural instructions (even Belgium style curfew) if we can save lives, livelihood (in the medium term) and the festivities. Otherwise a really sad and challenging year with no festive or any other joy to behold but constant bad to worst news with more lost to Covid!

Rowgtfc72 · 09/09/2020 18:06

Just had a message from dds school today to say a teacher has tested positive.
No need to withdraw pupils as school has been deep cleaned overnight and they are practicing social distancing.
3rd school in my area.

Aridane · 09/09/2020 18:12

It depends on what everyone wants.. simply this.

What are you happy with

1. Are you all ok with kids in school and either not seeing grandparents/people with compromised immunity ?

I do think that works
Though (or the other bit my copy and paste failed to pick up) as there are 7 million in the vulnerable category and children live with tem! So what then?

HippyHappygal · 09/09/2020 20:35

As an absolute last resort, yes. I can't see it happening nationally though, only locally.

Harls1969 · 09/09/2020 21:13

Hopefully not. I think individual schools (especially smaller ones) may close briefly if need be but I think school closures will be last resort and things would have to be very, very bad for all schools to close again.

ResIpsa, a class in my next door neighbour’s child’s secondary school got sent home after a positive test today. This is zone 2 of London near a large station.

Thank you for the heads up. We are zone 1 near a major central London transport hub. So far nothing on the grapevine as yet. Although I do understand (from conversing with locals) there are acute supply and demand issues regarding free NHS Covid tests in central London. This obviously would mean less accurate data is recorded especially as most of community transmission is evidently asymptomatic. That is the worrying bit. Obviously until Covid is eradicated being so contagious it will spread in any mass gathering prolonged indoor setting. Particularly in one where the is no PPE used! This is the risk element that (unlike schools globally) I feel unease about in London for primary schools with say more than 30 adults and 300 children day in day out. I hope the school can stay safe for hopefully until half term before someone inadvertently harbour incubate and shreds asymptomatic Covid underfed. The school believes use of hand washing but no social distancing (as physically impossible) and no PPE in any shape or form is ideal and safe enough? There is staggered arrival and exit (but as per last few days) much mixing of families and friends from many households in groups catching up in person adjacent to school gates with probably over half wearing a mask.

Latest figure is 439 UK Schools infected with Coronavirus.

Taking a break now, this evening, from it but will update you if anything significant happens.

• Infections growing fastest in under-19s
• Increasing number of schools with multiple infections

millymollymoomoo · 10/09/2020 08:14

Was always naive to think Covid wouldn’t be in schools. Always expects it to. The issue is not with kids getting it - they will - it’s his to best stop them infecting elderly or vulnerable in a way that does not mean destruction of the economy by shutting everything !
Protect care homes, protect hospitals yes, but everything rise needs to get on with it

Downinthedumps99 · 10/09/2020 08:17

I thought no and at least not for schools in my area as we have minimally effected by covid by since schools went back last weeks there have been 6 cases in one school and 3 in another.
So now thinking its a possibility Sad

middleager · 10/09/2020 08:25

14 schools with cases in my area as of yeaterday. However, I know of others not reported and another announced this morning, including my own DC's school where a class was sent home. They have been back less than a week.

LadyofTheManners · 10/09/2020 09:48

The problem is you have to hope schools are following advice. A parent at our school has been told to send her children in, all in different secondary school year groups, despite them having a cough and fatigue. She was told unless they have a temperature they must come to school. That is totally against current advice. She has sensibly decided not to send them in and is instead trying to locate a test but has got nowhere so far.
I'm horrified frankly.

MadameBlobby · 10/09/2020 09:50

I hope not. It was ridiculous they were closed for so long in the first place and has caused more problems than it could ever have solved.

MadameBlobby · 10/09/2020 09:53

Thing is with people going on about the number of schools with it now. How many were rife with it before lockdown and no one gave a shit? If there were 100000 cases in the community then, and 3000 now and cases in school, there must have been loads then. Worth keeping an eye on of course but I don’t get the worry

MadameBlobby · 10/09/2020 09:53

Daily cases I mean

Aragog · 10/09/2020 17:38

MadameBlobby

It can be a worry when you're clinically vulnerable and teaching in crowded rooms with poor ventilation, no SDing and no masks, etc indoors with 30 children. If one of them tests positive then its a worry when you've been in a room with them - and for many teachers in both primary and secondary teaching staff are moving between more than one class each day.

MadameBlobby · 11/09/2020 01:01

I can imagine - the (Ex) shielded are being treated very badly.

Oblomov20 · 11/09/2020 01:52

Yep. Assume they will. So don't want that to happen. Can't see it going any other way.

Howslifenow · 11/09/2020 15:48

Around 550 schools impacted now. R between 1 to 1.2. What can go wrong.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 11/09/2020 22:14

Could you kindly direct me and all others to some information and data sources? Details would be ideal as otherwise it is both difficult to keep track and therefore hard to appreciate.

All sorts of numbers seemingly posted here but where is the corresponding reference? Again not saying it is fake news but frustrating to see numbers which is meaningless in isolation without at least a locality connection or other important missing data tag.

There are lots of hearsay and rumours but no verifiable facts. And please don't say google yourself or look at every school public website as that is equally not particularly helpful when one is very anxious and concerned already.

Otherwise I might as well say millions of schools are hit with Covid with some here too! Where is here? Earth, Europe, England, London, Westminster, St James etc etc etc.

Thanks!
