Jut curious.

OP posts:

Herd immunity by the backdoor.

Or slaughter of the vulnerable through the front door.

Still, if you deny the elderly treatment for covid / access to hospital (as per April) and let it decimate the vulnerable, I guess you’ve solved the problem of covid.

I exaggerate of course

WendyE · 08/09/2020 18:47

I'll give it until half term - and that's being optimistic🙄

Eminybob · 08/09/2020 18:50

Socialisation is another thing, as is child care for those who cannot work from home

And childcare for those who can work from home. Because I can’t see how it’s possible to work from home while caring for and homeschooling young children.
I have been wfh since lockdown but DH and I have still had to take time off between us to manage childcare as there is absolutely no way i could do my job with dc around.

Also, if the schools close they would likely close nursery too, which will cause even more issues for working parents.

Callingallskeletons · 08/09/2020 19:00

Work in education and we have been told “schools will remain open even in local lockdowns
If schools are then thought to be the reason for a spike we have been told mainstream schools would close but all SEN schools will remain open“ (which definitely was not the case previously where we lived)

HOWEVER it’ll be physically impossible keeping them all open if groups of staff are having to isolate for 2 weeks at a time every few weeks

cardibach · 08/09/2020 19:07

Staff isolating will be a problem. Everyone saying ‘but they haven’t fought it in school it’s too soon’ you’re missing the point. Any community case presenting in a school is going to spread to far more than it would have done without packed classrooms, no distancing and no masks. Look at this number, then look at the account on twitter to see how fast It’s growing. And this is from scouting the net for news reports. I’m sure there are some which have escaped the media.

Caught not fought!

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 08/09/2020 19:15

It depends on what everyone wants.. simply this.

What are you happy with

  1. Are you all ok with kids in school and either not seeing grandparents/people with compromised immunity ?
  1. Do you think that the the elderly /compromised should either stay indoors, for at least the next six months so that kids can go to school. ?
  1. Do you think schools /Universities should close to cut the spread and give everyone a life. ?

Those are the choices .

GameSetMatch · 08/09/2020 19:19

Primary school will stay open and won’t ever close again, the government can’t afford to let parents stay at home instead of working.

Donelurking · 08/09/2020 19:24

At a local level - yes.
Nationally - very much doubt it.

mylifestory · 08/09/2020 19:27

Primary schools are the last to close in the 4 point plan apparently. Google it for the whole info as I cant at the moment ....

CuckooCuckooClock · 08/09/2020 19:35

As many pp have said - there will be far too many staffing issues to keep schools open unless they sort out testing.
My primary aged dc get several coughs each winter and I doubt they’re unusual. If I have to isolate for 2 weeks every time I’ll hardly be in school at all! Schools will not have the money nor are there enough supply teachers to cover all the absences.

NurseNancyandDoctorDavid · 08/09/2020 19:38

Just had phone call from DD school, child in her class has just tested positive. Sad

CuckooCuckooClock · 08/09/2020 19:45

Oh no that’s rotten!
So disappointing for the poor dc who were excited to get back.

Sandfairy69 · 08/09/2020 19:50

Daughter is in an independent day/ boarding school. All overseas girls isolated 2 weeks prior, all girls returned to school yesterday. Suspected case this evening, now day girls sent home until case is confirmed. The girls are gutted. This is messing with their minds so much.

VerbenaGirl · 08/09/2020 20:33

My old School had to close yesterday due to a number of staff testing positive and a local Sixth form was sent home in its entirety today. Will be case by case or regional now though.

Sweettea1 · 08/09/2020 20:39

Our school already had a positive teacher today only bk yesterday so class was sent home to isolate for 2 weeks I think this will just be the case in future

Juststopswimming · 08/09/2020 20:50

I sincerely hope they won't shut. I think there will be lots of disruption with isolating from cases but I think schools will be the last thing they close.

TooManyDogsandChildren · 08/09/2020 20:52

At some point parents will start pulling their children from school if cases rise too much. My DS has to take a school bus so the secondary school year bubble is well and truly popped for him. Any cases at his school and I will be pulling him out as I did in March.

sallyfox · 08/09/2020 21:09

no

Vynalbob · 09/09/2020 00:05

Yes

Unless they change the definition again so infections you are only counted on a Thursday and deaths are counted if tested positive in the previous 48 hrs unless your name begins with a D or a B.

Staffy1 · 09/09/2020 14:26

I don't think they will if the government can help it. Apparently covid doesn't exist in offices or schools. It magically knows to stay away from them. How thick do they think everyone is?

GetThatHelmetOn · 09/09/2020 15:18

Apparently covid doesn't exist in offices or schools

Grin I have been thinking that when it comes to what the governments wants, you can be assured that it is not what is the best for the population but what serves their agenda better.

I am quite relieved to see so many companies and schools opting to follow SAGE advice and ignore whatever Boris is waffling about under the weather conditions of the day, the direction of the wind or whatever position the moon is at...

GetThatHelmetOn · 09/09/2020 15:20

... and yes, they work on the assumption that we plebes are thick, and we must be... that’s how they have a majority. 😕

Merlin3189 · 09/09/2020 15:56

I'd have thought they will close again.

It's the second cheapest option if govt wants to make a quick impact on the figures. (First cheapest is to reduce testing!)
