Jut curious.

OP posts:

Yes, 3 schools in my city have had cases & schools haven't been back a week, will take a miracle for them to all make it to half term. In the news tonight confirmed cases have gone up again, may be just a blip or is this the second wave starting?

SeekingCoffee33 · 07/09/2020 00:22

I doubt it. If you take the poorly organised (on the governments behalf - not bashing schools at all) return to school and office workers being told to go back to work... looks like we are going for the original plan which was herd immunity.

BilboBercow · 07/09/2020 00:23

I'm in Scotland and I think NS will now close as a last resort, after pubs, gyms etc.

What will happen do you reckon with furlough etc ending and pubs closing if they do?
Planetaryexplorer · 07/09/2020 00:30

They won't close all schools again. It will be down to individual schools and cases.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 07/09/2020 00:33

I’m not sure how anyone is going to do any work if they do!

Staffy1 · 07/09/2020 00:33

3000 cases and 2 deaths...but the deaths from the 3000 cases will only be seen in at least a couple of weeks time or more. The 2 deaths recorded today relate to the number of cases weeks ago, which were probably a lot less, I haven't been following it lately. Cases seem to be rising sharply. I don't think schools will be shut nationwide though as the economy is being put first now.

Yes, it seems that's the plan now.
Intrepidintrovert · 07/09/2020 00:42

They'll have to be - what has changed? I mean, except for the fact we are heading into winter and flu season...?

The government will hang on grimly for far too long, though, in a desperate attempt to keep the economy going and because they don't want to admit that, oh yeah, kids do actually spread viruses actually.

SeekingCoffee33 · 07/09/2020 00:45

@Intrepidintrovert that’s what I’m worried about. If it gets bad and they do that it’ll terrible. Add in Brexit and it gives me the chills!

WhoAmIWhoAreYou · 07/09/2020 00:51

@Iggly

Yes. As winter approaches, the NHS will struggle again. That was the original reason for lockdown - to help manage the demand in the NHS.
They are preparing for a second wave. my SIL is an NHS worker. So should be more prepared come autumn/winter.
Kljnmw3459 · 07/09/2020 01:02

I really hope schools won't close, until as a last resort. I hope they go through all the other options first.

doubleshotespresso · 07/09/2020 01:05

Yes OP I think it's very likely.,.
I'm also hoping they do too

ElizabethMainwaring · 07/09/2020 01:12

@BlippiToys
Whereabouts are you, if you don't mind me asking?
(I'm also going to have to Google Hancock's constituency.)

TheSunIsStillShining · 07/09/2020 01:30

We have a bingo in our house for year group and full school closure.
On another note.. my son just got an email from school with the following:

"Fourth form will be resuming Games with touch rugby this term"

Congratulation for missing the point by miles. They also promise to bring back other team sports within weeks, like basketball, swimming,...
But they want me to go in tomorrow to talk about why I'm not sending my son back. They know that I am in the vulnerable category, and yet....

Whatdowehaveherethen · 07/09/2020 01:41

My 2 DS's went back last week. DS1 developed a persistent cough by Friday evening. DS2's cough came Saturday evening. No tests available despite checking every other hour. I don't drive.

I'll inform the school first thing in the morning. What that means, I don't know.

I'm more worried about working from home with them both here!

Augustbreeze · 07/09/2020 07:33

@Whatdowehaveherethen apparently more tests/slots get released at 8am daily (and 8pm). Hope you can get some.

boredboredboredboredbored · 07/09/2020 07:34

No. Although infection rate is going up, hospital admission are down as is the death rate. Hopefully it'll remain a weaker strain similar to flu / cold and we can all carry on with our lives as normal.

School closures will be an absolute last resort imo.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 07/09/2020 07:46

This.

I expect lots of individual, repeat closures, as and when cases come to light, to the point that at some point most schools are closed. I don't expect a blanket closure.

I am lucky that I can work from home and have an understanding manager - I can change hours and take time off at short notice and do my hours at antisocial times if I need to. I don't see how people who can't work from home, and have to give notice of changes will be able to manage individual, short-notice closures. Not to mention the impact on education.

Oh and bubbles of 90 and 180 are a bloody joke.

Redlocks28 · 07/09/2020 07:48

Yes, this is true.

Most people didn’t think schools would close in March, but they did. I think November is going to be very difficult and schools may well end up closing.

Beamur · 07/09/2020 07:48

I don't think we will see a blanket closure. But I think bubbles will be sent home to isolate.

SummerSummerSummertime · 07/09/2020 07:51

Yes of course they will 😔

Sheknowsaboutme · 07/09/2020 07:53

Yes i am. I was talking to my friend yesterday and parents at the school she works at have been pre-warned about closing at half term and not reopening.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 07/09/2020 07:55

Forgot to add - the death rate is very low right now and most cases are in younger people who are less likely to get critically ill.

However as around half of cases show no symptoms I expect there are a lot of people out there unaware that they are infected, and infecting others. Eventually this will hit older, more vulnerable people. Then, as seen in other countries, you get infection chains involving young, asymptomatic young people with lots of contacts - these are a nightmare to track and trace.

Herd immunity by the backdoor.

SarahBellam · 07/09/2020 07:56

I don’t understand how they haven’t thought this through in a much more creative way, and used church/village halls, outside teaching, mixed teaching for secondary schools (e.g. 10 hours a week face to face teaching with another 15 on remote activities - coursework, reading, homework, etc.). The government have thrown money at everything else so I’m surprised they haven’t thrown money at education to make it more sustainable. We’re doggedly trying to do ‘same old, same old’ in a world where ‘same old’ is possibly the least good option.
