For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?

I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

I think it's weird NOT to celebrate a dog's birthday.

Aridane · 06/09/2020 17:56

Aw, that’s lovely

userxx · 06/09/2020 17:58

@BornLucky I love that! She looks proud as punch 🥳

CokeyCola · 06/09/2020 17:58

@DimplesToadfoot 😁. I love those photos.

EDSGFC · 06/09/2020 18:00

Our dogs have always had Christmas and birthday presents, wrapped up too. No one else's business really is it?

Madvixen · 06/09/2020 18:02

@FrangipaniBlue Happy Barkday to your pup!

JalapenoDave · 06/09/2020 18:03

How mean of you OP! It's her pet, her money. She can do as she pleases.

squeekums · 06/09/2020 18:07

We buy and wrap our dog presents for his birthday and christmas
We have had him since 6 weeks, well technically, me from birth as i lived with his mum, was my housemates dog, he now 13
We have had him longer than DD who is 10

All of our inlaws and friends with dogs do the same actually

I even buy my cat gifts for christmas and her adoption day. Her birthday isnt known, just estimated age, she a rescue

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/09/2020 18:07

@JesusInTheCabbageVan
One of her presents every year is allowing her to stare at a particular tree (one she's obsessed with) for as long as she likes.

That's so cute!

@AdaFromYorkshire
I know someone who had a 25th birthday party for their fridge 😂

Love it!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/09/2020 18:14

@wildcherries oh god I'm sorry!! Blush No, don't remember it, it genuinely is one of those trivial things that pedantic arseholes pick up on to annoy normal people.

Imapotato · 06/09/2020 18:14

I don’t give my dogs birthday presents ( I mostly forget their birthdays) but it’s not something I could care about someone else doing.

My dogs do get Christmas presents though. I don’t want to leave them out when everyone else has presents and they actually enjoy unwrapping them. Dd1s birthday is just after Christmas and my old collie used to sit right next to her on her birthday waiting for her own gifts. She was always a bit miffed when she didn’t get any.

SecretSpAD · 06/09/2020 18:46

I'll go to the garage on the corner and get it a card and a badge

That's the spirit! If you can't beat them, join them!

Seriously though, this year has been tough for everyone so maybe we all need to find joy in the small things and the little celebrations in life like a dogs birthday or a cats coming home day.

Join in, OP. You'll love it.

Our dog always had birthday presents and got a sock at Christmas! We all got presents from him as well.

Dogs are members of peoples families as well.

SecretSpAD · 06/09/2020 18:51

@DimplesToadfoot that is the cutest thing I've ever seen on MN or even real,life. You've made my day xx

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 06/09/2020 18:52

Our cat always gets a birthday present and you can't tell me I'm projecting his love of cat treats (duck cat jerky anyone?) and catnip filled Hessian toys. I also cook him something nice for dinner on his birthday, a piece of fish or something, does he know it's his birthday, no clearly not, does he know he's had an awesome day, yes of course. If I was struggling to pay my bills or put food on the table, I wouldn't, but I'm not, so I do.

gingerbeerandlemonade · 06/09/2020 18:56

Ffs. I wouldn't but why do you care?!

RedRiverHog · 06/09/2020 18:57

@DimplesToadfoot Tiny stockings on little bunny beds! I love it!

Life is short and often shit. If something gives you joy then embrace it!

daisypond · 06/09/2020 19:01

I’m not a dog person and I think it’s completely fine. My cat gets a Christmas present. Not a birthday one - not organised enough for that! The cat gives us all cards on our birthdays, though.

mrscatmad31 · 06/09/2020 19:03

Umm I buy my animals (I have 8) birthday and Christmas presents, I don't care what anyone else thinks, I like them more than most people

Doihavetogotoworkdotcom1 · 06/09/2020 19:07

My dog always has a piece of steak on his birthday

Mommabear20 · 06/09/2020 19:08

Our dogs get presents and cake 😂 (the ones from pets at home that are meant for dogs). They also get Christmas presents! #furbabies

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 06/09/2020 19:09

@BornLucky she's gorgeous! 💕

YummyJamDoughnut · 06/09/2020 19:20

Santa used to leave gifts for my dog and cat under the tree!
Who cares what she does. It makes her happy and really is none of your business.

russetred · 06/09/2020 19:21

Yep, another family here that do pressies for the dog. It's a silly thing that makes us happy, why not! Life is all about the small joys really.

DidoAtTheLido · 06/09/2020 19:34

should not is a very bossy and judgmental thing to have said in your thread title.

But you don’t like people judging you for having an opinion.

I have never celebrated a pets birthday but I did coerce the cat into
Signing Ds’ card with a paw print.
