For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?

I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

Snap @EveryDayIsADuvetDay and an Easter egg 😂

caringcarer · 06/09/2020 16:22

We give our dogs birthday gifts like a new ball or lead and at Xmas they get s gift and turkey in gravy. Do do the 5 cats. We love our pets and like to show them we care. Stop being the Grinch.

Infullbloom · 06/09/2020 16:25

So basically 'my neighbour treats her dog well and I don't think she should, aibu?' righto Hmm

amusedtodeath1 · 06/09/2020 16:28

My last dog I never knew her Birthday but she always had gifts to unwrap at Christmas. She loved unwrapping gifts, we used to save the paper so she could play in it like leaves in autumn.

I ordered her a new bed once and let her open it when it came, for over two weeks she dragged that bed out to show visitors she was so proud of it.

They might not understand why, but they know something special is happening and they absolutely love it.

i think it's a weird thing to do. My sister does it for her dog. I'm very intolerant of that sort of nonsense

I am intolerant to miserable ,nosey people...

If I had such a miserable relative I'd make an even bigger thing of it!

itbemay1 · 06/09/2020 16:33

We sing to our dog and he gets a cake with a candle!!

corythatwas · 06/09/2020 16:37

I imagine the point is that it is fun.

This. My mum, despite having several children, did not have any family birthdays fall in the summer, so when she needed a celebration we found something to launch or christen. Fortunately, we lived by the seaside and had several dinghies, but I also remember christening a raft cobbled together of logs and bits of Styrofoam when my mother wanted to get her baking trays out. She would have been well up for a pet christening, in fact, a teddy bear would probably have done her. (Do I remember present wrappings for aquarium fish...?)

corythatwas · 06/09/2020 16:39

Oh and I do remember a very festive celebration when a sailing dinghy had been 10 years in the family.

lynsey91 · 06/09/2020 16:40

My dogs get birthday and Christmas presents. In fact they both get stockings at Christmas, one each from me and DH and one each from their nanny and grandad. They also get presents from my sister and her family

They get birthday and Christmas cards plus a birthday cake with a candle. We also sing happy birthday to them.

In return they buy Mothers and Fathers Day presents and birthday presents - they have very good taste too!

lazyarse123 · 06/09/2020 16:40

My dd kind hearted soul that she is got my ds a dog as he lives alone and has problems that mean he can't work, but he can look after the dog although we do keep a close eye on them both. Dd puts as much effort into gifts for the ddog at christmas as she does for ours all carefully wrapped too. Son and dog join us for christmas dinner and it's brilliant even dh gets involved and he's not a massive dog fan. So yadbu.

sapnupuas · 06/09/2020 16:40

My mum sends my dog a birthday card every year. It usually has the same breed of dog on it.

DewdropSnowdrop · 06/09/2020 16:40

Ok, I'm unreasonable.

I'll go to the garage on the corner and get it a card and a badge.

She's found a lovely reason to have a nice day for her family and good on her. She's finding joy in life and that's not to be sniffed at.

I personally like the saying - keep a bottle of champagne in the fridge for celebrations. Sometimes the celebration will be there's a bottle of champagne in the fridge. But then I don't have a pet.....

HeronLanyon · 06/09/2020 16:45

And it’s obvious but of course they give us birthday cards ! Often with a paw print of some smudgy sort.
Mine never did give me a present but the card was enough.

pigsDOfly · 06/09/2020 16:45

Loads of people make an occasion of their dog's birthday why does it offend you?

What's the point? It makes her happy and the dog will enjoy the new toys and treats. There doesn't have to be any more point to it than that.

In a world where dogs are abused, treated as breeding machines, starved and beaten I would think that anyone treating their dog in such a loving, kind way should be celebrated rather than resulting in having sneery threads started on mn about it.

Whengodwasarabbit · 06/09/2020 16:50

I think it’s lovely. I buy my dogs presents on their birthdays and Christmas. They also get a doggie Easter egg each. They have personalised Christmas stockings and I buy a birthday cake which they all get a slice of. Why not? They love it and get so excited.
Last Christmas was completely taken over by our old Jack Russell. He becomes very excited by wrapped presents and goes on an opening frenzy and then collapses exhausted after opening all his stuff, (he’s 18) We have to shut him in the bedroom after so he doesn’t open everything else 😂
Saying that we are animal mad. The guinea pigs get presents and our hamster had a tiny knitted stocking attached to her house.
It’s just a bit of fun and a sweet part of having a pet.

SlothMama · 06/09/2020 16:58

It's none of your business...

RhiWrites · 06/09/2020 16:58

In the year of the plague I think I’d celebrate a sofa’s birthday for a bit of light entertainment.

SummerPoppies · 06/09/2020 16:59

Don't buy it a badge OP. By the sounds of it you will delight in sticking the pin into the poor thing.

GeologyRox · 06/09/2020 16:59

It's not that unusual, but then as it doesn't really affect anyone else, I can't see the issue.
Unless she's marched round and demanded to know where the dogs card and pressies are then I don't think it's really anything worth thinking about.

oopsiedaisy2 · 06/09/2020 17:02

Always buy my dog gifts 😊 why not. Part of the family too :)

anxiousanna75 · 06/09/2020 17:03

I know of at least five people who celebrate their pets Birthdays, so she is not on her own.

PillarOfPoop · 06/09/2020 17:04

I don't understand why you have the energy to muster a single shit about your neighbour buying her dog a birthday present. So what?

liverbird10 · 06/09/2020 17:04

I'd actually like to thank the OP for this thread! Without it I'd never have heard all these great pet birthday stories. Defo found my people here. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to prepare a half chicken for the cats.
