For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?

I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

Also we had a joint birthday party for our dog and cat the other month.

The pets didn't really give a shit but our kids had a really good time. We got balloons and party food and they made little happy birthday cards.

It was a bit of fun and a laugh for us all during an otherwise shit lockdown 🤷‍♀️

Spidey66 · 06/09/2020 17:09

No different to giving a baby a bday or Christmas present imo. The baby doesn't realise it's bday or Christmas. We get our dog a pressie, usually a ball or something. None of your business.

My dog bought my husband a bday card. So there.

popcornlover · 06/09/2020 17:09

YABU - very! Jeez, wouldn’t like to be on the receiving end of your Santa! Presents show love and respect.

AlwaysLatte · 06/09/2020 17:10

Why shouldn't she? We buy ours presents. Hope it's ok with the neighbour.

DimplesToadfoot · 06/09/2020 17:11

My Hamster and bunnies have birthday and Christmas presents, 'they' even put up their own stockings, its a bit of fun and it doesn't hurt anyone. My dog thinks ripping open a present is the best thing ever and will try to open everyone's given half a chance :-)

And we invited our parents too who brought presents for them 😂

It was a fun night, an excuse to have a party, for the kids to play party games and stay up late and for the adults to have a chat and some drinks. According to the children we are doing it every year now. We have three pets though so we've agreed that we'll do a joint party for all of them 😂

And yes the dog can unwrap gifts. He gets rather excited actually.

Coffeecak3 · 06/09/2020 17:13

My dog got a new lead and some treats this birthday.

AbbieFB · 06/09/2020 17:19

Oh my goodness, those little beds are adorable!

My dog gets birthday and Christmas presents. He also gets steak and cake and had friends over (human ones) as well. It seems to make him happy, he loves unwrapping gifts!

Minimumstandard · 06/09/2020 17:20

Are you jealous of your neighbour's dog?

If this is the only issue you have with your neighbour, you are truly blessed.

SurreyHillsGirl · 06/09/2020 17:21

What’s it got to do with you, you nosey baggage Confused

My dogs turn one in a couple of weeks. We are going to buy presents, let them eat their favourite food (pizza) and have doggy appropriate cake. DH is all for it. We are both professional, intelligent people. They aren’t child subs by the way, we’re not keen on children 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🐶❤️

TorgosPizza · 06/09/2020 17:21

She does it because she wants to. Because it's fun and she enjoys it. Maybe her kids enjoy it, too. I guarantee the dog enjoys it. He doesn't know it's his birthday, but he'll love the extra food and toys!

It seems very Scroogey to gripe about or profess befuddlement over someone celebrating their dog's birthday (including taking and sharing photos). Unless she's inviting you over and expecting you to make a fuss over her dog, too, why would you care?

AriettyHomily · 06/09/2020 17:21

Well it has sweet fa to do with you

Sakalibre · 06/09/2020 17:30

My dog gets birthday presents, a cake and a roast chicken! He brings so much joy to our lives it would feel wrong not to spoil him. Love seeing him happy!

We probably spent over £100 on him this year but I don't think our local independent pet shop would complain.

There are no young kids in our family so I guess we do baby him but he has beautiful manners - he's often complimented by strangers.

@DewdropSnowdrop

Ok, I'm unreasonable.

I'll go to the garage on the corner and get it a card and a badge.

Do it! You'll be invited next year, I'm sure of it. 🐾❤️🎂🍰🥂
RoseTintedAtuin · 06/09/2020 17:36

@DimplesToadfoot that is the cutest thing ever!! I love your dedication and now need to follow suit this Christmas!

SignOnTheWindow · 06/09/2020 17:38

@DewdropSnowdrop do you also find it weird that people buy Christmas presents for newborn babies?

SignOnTheWindow · 06/09/2020 17:39

Grin Your neighbour will love you forever if you do this!

My cat who is 19 always gets a very special birthday with lovely food and a new catnip toy.
Shes 19 and has given me untold pleasure during her long life.

SignOnTheWindow · 06/09/2020 17:43

@DimplesToadfoot , my guinea pigs and chinchillas get Christmas stockings too. And a christmas 'tree' - sprouts on the stalk decorated with carrot shavings for the guineas and a dried apple branch decorated with chew toys for the chinnies.

I may be a little bit obsessed.

TeensArghhh · 06/09/2020 17:46

You don’t buy your dog birthday and Christmas presents? 😵 That’s weird!

Hello Fellow chinchilla owner!

Mine get a Christmas tree made out of sticks with some goodies underneath it Grin

BornLucky · 06/09/2020 17:48

We always get our dog presents and wrap them (she loves tearing the paper off). We don't usually push the boat out this far, but she was 10!! Even the neighbours bought her presents 😄.

MeWithBear · 06/09/2020 17:49

OP I really think you should buy your dog neighbor a birthday gift.

MondeoFan · 06/09/2020 17:50

We celebrate our dogs birthday every year and don't do a wrapped present but do a birthday cake ( doggy version)

CyberPixie · 06/09/2020 17:51

I have 3 dogs. They get presents and dog cake for birthdays and a stocking with their name on it full of presents each at Christmas. Lots of people spoil their dogs and do it, they're family.
