I'm just asking as DH was watching A Hard Days Night. I'll always love Johns smile Blush

@stovetopespresso John didn't actually say that, it's just an internet rumour. It was said as part of a sketch show on the radio by a comedian called Jasper Carrott.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 04/09/2020 17:16

I have very little time for people who get niggardly when people live by the rules.

If he was entitled to free transport, then WTF shouldn't he claim it ? Bearing in mind his taxes probably paid not only for the bus, the school and the road between the two, but the hospital in between, since he never chose to become a tax exile.

Damm right.

HalfBrick · 04/09/2020 17:17

When I was younger I fancied Ringo, now I fancy George. Paul seems the most decent husband material and John would've been a laugh as a mate but not as a boyf.

Pilcrow · 04/09/2020 17:18

George ❤️❤️❤️

I have a mild Beatles obsession and I've read a lot of books on the subject. Yes, they all had fallibilities, who doesn't?

But I keep coming back to George as a) the best-looking b) quietly witty and c) actually a really lovely man by most accounts. Michael Palin knew him well because GH set up Handmade Films to finance Life of Brian (as a pp said - they financed several hit British films of the 80s ) and spoke very highly of him.

Mark Lewisohn's book about the Beatles is fascinating. He's only written Vol 1 so far and it's a weighty tome. Can't wait for Vol 2.

CremeEggThief · 04/09/2020 17:18

George.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/09/2020 17:19

@Pilcrow I'm desperate to read that, I want to buy the limited edition but it's £150 Envy

Pilcrow · 04/09/2020 17:22

£150? Woah! I think I just bought it in hardback when it first came out. It is brilliant though.

TwiggyTwogs · 04/09/2020 17:27

Starting to like George more now!!Smile

No allegedly - a judge said he did.
yeOldeTrout · 04/09/2020 17:36

Could we just talk artistically who was best -- I reckon Paul wins and not just by out-surviving 2/3 of the others.

That's where it gets ... tricky. Obviously Paul and John were stellar talents in their own right. But sadly their post Beatles output shows they really were greater than the sum of two halves (in my humble opinion). A lot depends on what your views of what their best post-Beatles output was ... and I really cannot abide "Imagine" - such an obvious Oasis ripoff I'm surprised lawyers weren't involved.
pigsDOfly · 04/09/2020 17:42

Not for me with their simple tunes and simple words.

Much more of a Rolling Stones type of gal.

RuffleCrow · 04/09/2020 17:46

Ringo

Hmm

personally I think there's a lot of depth to their songwriting - lyrically and musically.

And Paul was a very innovative bass player. It's a testament to his songwriting few mention it. He's up there with John Entwhistle and Jack Bruce ...

KitKat2020 · 04/09/2020 17:51

@DGRossetti and @ThePluckOfTheCoward

The main point being made was that Paul didn’t do the school run, his children took the bus.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 04/09/2020 17:58

I think that if you consider the music then George Martin deserves a huge amount of the credit.

If you say so - as I say, I'm hardly superfan.

That said, I'm sure there was an interview (maybe the one he did with Mary) where it got mentioned that he did sometimes appear at school.

Either way, it seems to be almost beyond parody to nitpick over whether he personally did the school run to the local state school as a means to obscure the fact that he (and presumably Linda) decided to send their children to the local state school.

And it doesn't detract from the fact that in order to stay together as a family he taught Linda to play and took her + baby on the road around the UK. Which I would applaud with knobs on in 2020, but this was nineteen fucking seventy fucking two ....

FOKKYFC · 04/09/2020 18:21

John Lennon was prodigiously talented, but a fairly awful person. Ringo's 'Peace and Love' schtick is pretty tiresome. Paul is ok although I couldn't stick Linda and he proved himself to have pretty shocking taste in women by marrying Heather Mills. I'd say George. Comfortably George.

TwiggyTwogs · 04/09/2020 18:36

Ringo makes me laugh with his tweets. I wonder if he's self aware Grin

John was definitely the most talented imo and (though I wasn't alive at the time) I think the stuff he did with Yoko in promoting peace with bed-ins etc was amazing and showed dedication and an ability to laugh at himself. I saw a concert/show (Rock and Roll Circus?) in which he appeared with Yoko who halfway through got out of a bag on the floor and started her screaming thing, with Eric Clapton etc playing. I love how they all keep playing poker-faced as if it's entirely normal Grin. He was a shit to his first wife and his son though, but was also quite candid about the former.

George is a bit meh imo and Ringo - sweet, but now a Brexitier, so no.

Paul is insufferable and what really put me off him was a few years ago he wanted to change the writing credits on some of the songs so that instead of being 'Lennon/McCartney on all of them, as per the alphabet, the name order would be reversed if he was the main/only writer. Knob.

TellySavalashairbrush · 04/09/2020 18:54

Paul. He looked gorgeous in those pictures Linda McCartney took of him in the early 70s with a beard, cuddling his kids 😍

ALongHardWinter · 04/09/2020 18:57

John. Helped by the fact that he shares my birthday. Grin In reality,I think Ringo was actually the nicest of them all. From what I've read about John,he was capable of being very unpleasant. But he is still one of my all-time idols.

AdoptedBumpkin · 04/09/2020 19:01

Probably George. Quite like Paul, but he is known for being tight, which is hard to excuse with his wealth. John had some good values but also was a bit fond of himself. Ringo seems like a plonker really, who was very lucky to be in a band with the others.

TwiggyTwogs · 04/09/2020 19:02

@TellySavalashairbrush Ah, yes 😍
