I'm just asking as DH was watching A Hard Days Night. I'll always love Johns smile Blush

@wowfudge

Bob Dylan has written some amazing songs - many of them sung and made famous by other artists. He may not be a great singer, but his contribution to music is considerable.
Agree with this. Bob Dylan, for me, is probably one of the most important musicians of recent history. He is also my personal favourite, so I might be a little biased. I don't think it matters that his voice is weak. He is more poet who reads his poems over music, than musician to me.
Cam2020 · 07/09/2020 09:54

George. Can't stand Paul or John - smug pair of gits. I actaukky know nothing about George or aringo though, so that could also change!

@DGRossetti,

I am not a conspiracy theorist. I’m also not stupid.

If you think any of those facts aren’t relevant, I would consider you stupid.

To be fair, most people don’t want to talk about it, and I can understand why because it’s tragic and sad and profoundly messed up. Much like John himself. That’s why the biographers leave it alone. They hint at it without spelling it out, but they know.

Clawdy · 07/09/2020 10:10

Thought this thread was about Beatles, not favourite other groups?

anorangeaday · 07/09/2020 10:16

George

Oh I am pleased that the Kinks are getting am honourable mention, as Ray and Dave are close relatives of mine
The original wibbling rivalry Smile

He is more poet who reads his poems over music, than musician to me.

I've always felt Paul Simons lyrics were more poetry than song. at times ...

I am just a poor boy though my stories seldom told
I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of promises
All lies and jests, Still a man hears what he wants to hear, And disregards the rest

NotEvenTheKing · 07/09/2020 10:26

John Lennon.

NotEvenTheKing · 07/09/2020 10:38

DGRossetti "and I really cannot abide "Imagine" - such an obvious Oasis ripoff I'm surprised lawyers weren't involved."

Is this a joke?! Because it must be. Lennon died in 1980. Oasis weren't a thing until the 90s.

FatherDickByrne · 07/09/2020 10:39

Haven’t got time to RTFT (soz) but Paul. Musical genius.

Yes, I agree. S&G songs are also very poetic, but actually have catchy melodies too, unlike some of Bob Dylan's less popular stuff! Still love him.

Homeward Bound and Wednesday morning 3am though ❤.

LunaMay · 07/09/2020 10:49

I wasn't around for the Beatles but my dad introduced me to some of their music as a kid. My favorite was Paul back then because of The frog song and my obsession with Rupert Bear..

I would say i enjoy George more these days.

BirthdayCakes · 07/09/2020 10:53

PAUL!!!

Love his solo work too..

No I'm serious. I really am that thick.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred

kierenthecommunity · 07/09/2020 11:01

I quite liked George because of the Travelling Wilberries 😂 I also really loved Something.

Didn’t realise it was fashionable to like him though!

I went off Ringo with the ‘peace and love, fuck off with you wanting autographs, peace and love’ bollocks.

Paul just seems a bit mean and joyless, behind that cheeky chap facade. Admittedly that’s based on not much actual knowledge. I do love ‘Band on the Run’ though.

John, well. He just was so unpleasant wasn’t he?

deepbluesea18 · 07/09/2020 11:36

I think John put it best actually.

He said: ‘Paul and I were the Beatles. It could have been us and any other two people.’

And he was right. Much to George’s chagrin.

wowfudge · 07/09/2020 12:45

Paul has a gift for writing great melodies and has been done a disservice by lots of Lennon fans who have elevated him to God like status. It's hard to compete with someone who's been dead for 40 years and who many have put on a pedestal.

Lucky you. I wish I hadn’t! Grin Hmm
yescheese · 07/09/2020 15:19

Love this thread! I was brought up on 60s music!

My favourite changes, I did rather love Paul on Carpool Karaoke though and I like his animal welfare principles!

Paul and John definitely the astronomical talent of the group together, but I don't agree with John's quote that the other 2 could have been anyone.

Ringo I think was the perfect drummer for the beatles, he was pretty creative in places but I think a real Ginger Baker style virtuoso would've been far too much. Ringo's style and restraint, plus his personality kept them down to earth and likeable. I think he could take probably more credit for their level of popularity than he is given. Obviously he didn't have the same songwriting ability as Paul and John.

John was a stellar talent but the treatment of his son makes me unhappy. I understand he was very complex and flawed. I don't know anything about all the occult stuff!

George, also, not quite the same level of talent but brought a lot to the table that maximised their popularity- I believe it was his initial interest in mysticism that took them down that direction, pop star looks, not the most prolific writer but some really beautiful and thoughtful songs.

Wotsitsarecheesy · 07/09/2020 18:47

Thanks for that, @looseddaughter, helpful to know!

deepbluesea18 · 07/09/2020 19:42

I think it’s easy to miss the point about the ‘occult stuff’, @yescheese.

@DGRossetti seems to think that anyone with a healthy scepticism about the official narrative (lies) peddled by John and Yoko is a conspiracy theorist.

On the other hand, I think that anyone who doesn’t see the holes in the story of what the hell happened to John has the sentience of a farm animal.

The occult stuff was likely being used by the people around John and Yoko (ie, the art circle) as a front for organised crime. It was also being used to manipulate them.

John believed it. I don’t know about her - probably not. The Sams? No way.

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 16/07/2025 09:08

@dgrossettiI know this thread is 5 years old, but as a massive Oasis fan who is still on a high from seeing them live last week, I stumbled across this thread…

I’m not quite sure what you mean. What do you mean by showing your age? Do you mean you are very old? Or very young?

I just can’t get my head around somebody thinking that an Oasis song was released before Imagine. Particularly as John Lennon died in 1980.

I assume you are talking about Don’t Look Back In Anger, and I agree, the chords at the very beginning are very similar to Imagine. But that’s Noel Gallagher copying John Lennon.

You sound like a Beatles fan and presumably know when they / John Lennon were producing music, and that Imagine came out in the 70s (1971) and Lennon died in the 80s (1980).

I’m not even a Beatles fan but am aware of the rough dates.

Therefore, did you think that Oasis released Don’t Look Back in Anger prior to 1971?

Not meaning to be rude, just genuinely curious how you could have got that so wrong as you seem otherwise quite knowledgeable.

Auburngal · 16/07/2025 09:14

George. Loved his dry wit and his post Beatle music is the best of the four.

Ringo. Because he did the voice on Thomas the tank engine when I was little.

Definitely Ringo!

Grrrr! Just realised how OLD this thread is! 🙄
