I need to buy a large Victoria Sponge

Sorry to hijack AIBU but I need traffic! DD is 18 on Monday and I'd assumed a large chocolate cake would do. She said this morning she'd really like a Victoria Sponge instead!

I DO NOT bake, it's obviously too late to get one made for me, so does anyone know where I can buy a really nice large Victoria Sponge in a shop???? I will decorate but can't bake one.

Please let me know if you have any bright ideas and I'll save you a piece Cake Smile Many many thanks

Get to Costco!

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/09/2020 14:44

It may not be too late to get one made for you. Check your local fb for local bakers. Otherwise try Marks?

Busybusybust · 04/09/2020 14:44

Morrisons do them - with jam and fresh cream. I think you have to order in advance, or they might make them fill them whilst you wait.

TorkTorkBam · 04/09/2020 14:44

Costco ones are very nice.

AlexaShutUp · 04/09/2020 14:45

I'd try a local cafe early in the morning! They might be willing to sell you a whole cake. I love a good Victoria sponge, but the shop-bought ones are never as nice.

FWIW, they really aren't difficult to make...and I'm no baker!

52andblue · 04/09/2020 14:48

Morrisons do a very nice quite large chocolate or plain one for £7?
It should feed 10 easily but is cheap enough you could get 1 & a spare.
they are made fresh that day and you could spruce it up with fresh cream and berries to look a bit more fancy? You can probably order one

Merryoldgoat · 04/09/2020 14:54

It’s a very straightforward cake. Do any of your friends bake?

I could whip one up for you in about an hour. It really wouldn’t be hard if you have an able friend.

LucyAutumn · 04/09/2020 14:57

Go to you nearest M&S cafe and ask them if you can buy a whole one, they are the best and definitely big enough and worthy of an 18th.

Notthisnotthat · 04/09/2020 14:58

Any supermarket but Morrison's ones are best. Costco are sickly sweet.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 04/09/2020 15:02

Costco - a tenner for about 18-20 slices.

IHateCoronavirus · 04/09/2020 15:05

Costco CakeSmile yum

eatsleepread · 04/09/2020 15:08

I don't find Costco cakes yummy at all. And they don't go stale when left out, so Lord knows what they have in them.

AriettyHomily · 04/09/2020 15:10

Waitrose do a plain one for decorating, it's it huge though

LeaveMyDamnJam · 04/09/2020 15:14

Costco isn’t going to work if OP isn’t a member or knows one.

Your only bet is a stack of supermarket ones if you really can’t make one. It is v v simple. Mary Berry has some Uber simple recipes - give it a try 😉

TheRealShatParp · 04/09/2020 15:16

Costco cakes look a lot better than they taste (too sweet) so I’d avoid. Vicky sponges with fresh cream are the beat IMO so would go to a supermarket. Or get a plain vanilla sponge cake, cut the top off and add whipped cream and jam yourself.

BoudicasBoudoir · 04/09/2020 15:18

Where were you going to get the chocolate cake?

MarinaMarinara · 04/09/2020 15:22

Surprised to see Morrison’s cakes recommended - I have been seriously underwhelmed by them - the texture on those cream filled large cakes is all wrong. Like it’s been made with Swiss roll sponge. I suspect the best bet may be to get one from a local cafe - if you pop in this afternoon I bet you could arrange to pick one up over the weekend. Or get a decorated cake from Pâtisserie Valerie - they do next day delivery do again you could order today.

They don't get chance to go off in our house Blush I LOVE their red velvet, it's my all time favorite

They taste weirdly artificial but are strangely addictive Confused

Isn't their stuff frozen?

Teacher12345 · 04/09/2020 15:36

Definitley Costco!

LearnedResponse · 04/09/2020 15:36

Iceland do a frozen one with cream in the middle which might be good. At £1.50 you could buy one today, defrost it and eat it surreptitiously tomorrow as a tester, and then if it’s any good get another one for the day itself to put candles on.

EvilHerbivore · 04/09/2020 15:39

Desserts delivered bakery £15 and they do next day delivery
Got the rainbow chocolate one for DS2 birthday and it was really nice

LearnedResponse · 04/09/2020 15:39

Or could you and DD have a go at baking one together? It might be fun, and if it’s a team effort then any disasters are entertaining.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/09/2020 15:39

We had a cost co one at work last week. It was divine.
