Ms Krug, a Jewish woman form Kansa purported to be a Black woman and was a Professor of AfricanAmerica Hostory at George Washington University . Teaching classes and supervision grad and undergrad students in African American History

She was also an activist who posted and participated in rallies and events as Jessica La Bombalera. Demonstrating against the gentrification of East Harlem, proclaiming it to be her neighbourhood

Essentially she has gaslight,lied and assumed an identity that is not hers. In doing so,other candidates were denied opportunities,remuneration. She has assumed an identity and heritage that was not hers to assume

Exposed by a student who had the courage to confide in other teaching staff

@DioneTheDiabolist

I thought this thread was about a white woman appropriating black culture for financial and professional gain. Turns out it's another Transtranstranstranstranstrans thread.Hmm

I'll leave y'all to it.

And yet your point is still applicable to trans. Many men appropriate the woman cote for financial and professional gain. Self ID is an issue for all protected characteristics.
Somanysocks · 04/09/2020 11:30

People can identify as what they want, except it doesn't change the facts. All that happens is that their mental illnesses are being pandered to without getting to the root of their problems.

@Advicewouldbeappreciated

I wonder if she was a man if she'd have received such condemnation
Well, the fact that people know about Rachel Dolezal but not Gwen Benaway answers that 😉
stairway · 04/09/2020 11:32

This thread was always going to compare this situation with other forms of self Identification. Some forms of self identification are acceptable by society and some forms are not. I presume in the future this kind of self identification will be entirely acceptable particularly in America where most people have some form of mixed heritage.

skippy67 · 04/09/2020 11:36

Why don't we ever hear about black people identifying as white? And being appointed to roles where the race they identify as is key to said appointment?

Pertella · 04/09/2020 11:38

It will become acceptable once white men figure out a way to do it whilst claiming they are more oppressed than genuine black people actually how dare you try to deny my existence TRERF!

stairway · 04/09/2020 11:43

I think Michael Jackson probably identified as white. Although it was his musical talent that made him famous, but would he have been as successful as an adult if he has kept his black looks?

Bryyy · 04/09/2020 11:43

@skippy67 that's untrue. My ex FIL was the head of the school of African and West Indies Studies and he's a white man.

picklemewalnuts · 04/09/2020 11:46

This feels to me like someone very needy, who feels underprivileged- they have had problems etc which aren't widely recognised, they aren't as successful as they should be, they feel the world owes them something.

They don't recognise their white privilege (as is often the case) and join the oppressed group so they can be recognised as part of an oppressed group, because they 'feel' oppressed.

If they feel oppressed they can fight for their rights alongside everyone else fighting for their rights, take advantage of equalising schemes etc.

picklemewalnuts · 04/09/2020 11:47

And in this case, she's now lined herself up to be even more oppressed, the target of loads of hate because of her behaviour. She's making a world that fits her internal victim narrative.

@Whatisthisfuckery

If it’s fine for a man to say he’s a woman then it’s fine for a white woman to say she’s black. We can’t have it both ways. Either claiming to be a member of an oppressed group to which you do not belong is acceptable or it isn’t.
This sums it up perfectly
MoltenLasagne · 04/09/2020 11:53

Why don't we ever hear about black people identifying as white?

It's not uncommon - my grandfather hid his nationality and race because he was white passing and it was easier to be white in 1950s England. We didn't discover the truth until going through his papers after he died. He might not have got a specific "white only" job but I can guarantee he would've had a harder time getting employment if he hadn't done so.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/09/2020 11:53

@Whatisthisfuckery

If a student confided in a member of teaching staff that another staff member was in fact a man, rather than a woman, they’d get acccused of transphobia, re-educated, and more than likely sanctioned.

For all those who will say ‘let’s not turn this into a thread about trans,’ can you not see the wopping great double standard and hypocrisy here?

Personally I think neither kind of impersonation is acceptable, but if you disagree I’d be interested to know why.

And this! @Whatisthisfuckery you are saying so succulently what I am thinking.
StealthPolarBear · 04/09/2020 11:54

Yes to hypocrisy and double standards. Actually making me furious.

AnotherEmma · 04/09/2020 12:06
@AnotherEmma
Women in the West are not an oppressed group. The fact that women in other parts of the world are oppressed doesnt automatically entail that all women are. Christians are oppressed in some countries, but it makes no sense to say all Christians are victims of oppression.
What on Earth are you on about?!
This is complete nonsense.

foxyroxyy · 04/09/2020 12:08

As a black woman I agree. Honestly if a man can say he's as much as a woman as me and I have to accept that, I can accept a white woman deciding shes black. Much to my dismay.
ShastaBeast · 04/09/2020 12:08

@SentientAndCognisant

White privilege gave Ms Kruger the self belief,that as clever white woman anything she wanted was attainable. She felt able to play the game, and hell if she bent a few truths...well that’s tough
I don’t think this is what white privilege is. As a working class white woman, I definitely don’t have this belief, far from it, I really struggle with limiting myself. It’s more a middle class privilege, which is less visible.

White privilege is about not having to worry about judgement based on your skin colour/ethnicity.

I don’t get the issue with mentioning she is jewish. As she mentions it so upfront and centrally, wouldn’t it be more weird to not mention it. It’s another ethnic minority which has been oppressed, rather than being free from any racial prejudice. Perhaps there is a connection to her jewish upbringing and the trauma.

The Dolezal case was also linked to trauma. It was a way of disowning her parents and embracing the culture of her adopted siblings. She is delusional but I felt sorry for her. It’s similar to some transgender cases where trauma is strongly linked to their birth sex. They want to disown that and become a different person.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 04/09/2020 12:18

I'd like a bit more justification from the posters who assert that this doesn't bear any relation to the debate around women's rights and trans rights.

If we have to respect (and believe) self-declared gender identity, why don't we have to respect and believe self-declared racial identity?

EvaHoffman · 04/09/2020 12:20

The case of the actor Anthony Ekundayo Lennon which a couple of people have mentioned is not the same.

He is an actor who generally takes black roles because of his looks and has accepted them and began to identify as black because it was convenient for him despite believing himself to be white. He grew up in what appeared to be a white family.

The twist to his story is that he recently took a DNA test which showed he has a black parent (or grandparent) which I guess has been covered up.

AlltheLemurs · 04/09/2020 12:20

I am fascinated by people like this. I mean why would you do it. She is also embarrassingly fake. Her accent and the introduction to her book no one talks like that. No one writes like that.

I know loads of white academics who study black history. She could have studied this without pretending to be black. Apparently her job was a diversity hire so she took a job that was reserved for a black academic.

She seems to have changed her story lots of times as well.

EvaHoffman · 04/09/2020 12:21

Why don't we ever hear about black people identifying as white?

What? We do. It is (or was) very common indeed.

justanotherneighinparadise · 04/09/2020 12:26

@skippy67

The only roles where being white would be key to the appointment would be the head of UKIP or the English Defence League Confused

Black people who passed as white certainly did used to identify with their white heritage in the past. It’s very interesting to watch the heritage programs where the families trace their family tree and found out the truth.

Durgasarrow · 04/09/2020 12:30

How could this not be appropriate to compare to transgenderism? This is exactly what transgenderism is. Identity theft.

JanewaysBun · 04/09/2020 12:37

The more cases like this come to light the more people will look logically at all forms of self identification and the sooner that happens the better tbh....

White people can't "become" black
Men cannot "become" women
