Am just watching an old Masterchef episode and one of the contestants is doing Greek food that I’ve never heard of.
It also got me thinking about when a friend cooked me something called pinacculty (if that’s how it’s spelled)?

Tell me about your lesser known local food specialities.

agododopushpineapple · 01/09/2020 21:11

@Polnm what’s a fat rascal?

VestaTilley · 01/09/2020 21:15

Pan of Scouse, my Nana’s recipe.

Polnm · 01/09/2020 21:16

A fat rascal, closely related to the historical turf cake, is a type of cake, similar to a scone or rock cake in both taste and ingredients. It originated in Yorkshire at least as early as the 19th century.

Ham and pease pudding stottie.
I love a ham and pease pudding stottie!

A good chip butty with batter and gravy too.

bridgetreilly · 01/09/2020 21:18

Oatcakes. Proper ones.

RHOBHfan · 01/09/2020 21:18

Sausage, mash, beans, gravy.

Nom.

Skigal86 · 01/09/2020 21:19

I wouldn’t say it’s lesser known but I do love a bakewell pudding (not a tart) from one of the pudding shops in Bakewell.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 01/09/2020 21:22

I'm not Turkish, but miss working in NE London where I could get amazing lahmacun - can't find a Turkish place that does them where I live now, and have resorted to making my own.

Calic0 · 01/09/2020 21:23

OP, was your friend from the North East? My DH is from Middlesbrough and one of his favourite childhood memories is of his Mam cooking a corned beef stew which she called “panacalty”.

YY to Fat Rascals as well! One of my big treats during lockdown was getting a mail order delivery from Betty’s and having Fat Rascals for afternoon tea!

ghostyslovesheets · 01/09/2020 21:23

chips and proper gravy - with a savoury cake

ghostyslovesheets · 01/09/2020 21:24

missyB1 · 01/09/2020 21:24

Old spot sausages - yum yum!
Oh and a drip cake.

DivisionBelles · 01/09/2020 21:25

Cornish Pasty. Not any of your Ginsters rubbish though.

thewhitechair · 01/09/2020 21:25

Potato pierogi with sour cream

Drogonssmile · 01/09/2020 21:25

I LOVE Staffordshire oatcakes! I'm in Bolton but luckily our local Sainsbury's sells them.

Best smothered in just butter or butter and marmalade or for a savoury version with bacon and cheese.

My cousins who live in Somerset always clear the shelves of them when they visit and take them home to freeze!

TheQueef · 01/09/2020 21:26

Sheffield Fishcakes.

Tlollj · 01/09/2020 21:27

Pie,mash and liquor

JetBlackSteed · 01/09/2020 21:27

Potato bread and soda bread. And Veda.

linerforlife · 01/09/2020 21:30

Huffkins. Most importantly Gypsy Tart.

newtb · 01/09/2020 21:30

Confit de canard
Foie gras
Tortu(e) just like Staffordshire oatcakes
Tourte fromagère (like à cheesecake, with curd cheese and blackened but not burnt top)
Cabecou - disc of rinded goat cheese
Clafoutis
Walnuts
'flat' peaches and nectarines
Stuffed duck necks
Duck/chicken gizzards (lovely and tender when they've been stewed in duck fat)

Not much else!

Pepperwort · 01/09/2020 21:31

Skigal86 oh yes! The ones without icing, mind you. Also proper Derbyshire oatcakes. Never mind the Staffs aficionados, they’ve not had the proper ones poor dears Grin.

RedCatBlueCat · 01/09/2020 21:31

I vote lemon tops.
DH would say parmo.
