Am just watching an old Masterchef episode and one of the contestants is doing Greek food that I’ve never heard of.
It also got me thinking about when a friend cooked me something called pinacculty (if that’s how it’s spelled)?

Tell me about your lesser known local food specialities.

@TheTurnOfTheScrew oh lahmacuns are amazing and generally Turkish food is amazing also their desserts. I moved out of London last year but still visit NE London once a month to eat there.

Potaje.
Corned lamb stew.
Turron.

Gancanny · 01/09/2020 23:58

Another regional thing - Cooplands bakers. We in NE England gave you all Greggs' and it was our gift but you aren't getting Cooplands. Sorry.

Corned beef patties from the chippy - corned beef, onion, and mashed potato, dipped in batter and fried.

Eggy cup, I don't know if its regional but my cousin now lives near Sheffield and says no one there has ever heard of it.

Floddies, perfect hangover food.

@DaisyDaisyMae

Parmo
I am Aussie by birth but Parmo's are the food of the gods

and Yorkshire caviar with mash and good beef pie and gravy (not of this Jus stuff)

Oh and proper northern fish and chips with scraps

ktp100 · 02/09/2020 00:17

Another vote for Staffy Oatcakes (especially filled with cheese and ham and covered in brown sauce).x.

anorangeaday · 02/09/2020 00:18

Orange chips

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/09/2020 00:26

Butteries/rowies/Aberdeen rolls - warmed under the grill, then with butter and cheddar cheese. My DP would have butter/jam, but to mr they are savoury. And about a million calories each.

Adwodeabo · 02/09/2020 00:45

There are several things I eat which DH (who grew up leas than 20 miles away) wouldn’t touch. Winkles. Dripping sandwiches. Butter boiled fish. Leek dumpling. Sardines on toast. All of which gross him out.

PhilSwagielka · 02/09/2020 00:48

Manchester tart. It’s a bit like a Bakewell tart but has coconut instead of almonds.

TheSunIsStillShining · 02/09/2020 00:48

eastern europe:

  • sztrapacska (curded ewe cheese + gnocchi like pasta, but without potato in the pasta)
  • porkolt (shitloads of onions browned + loads of paprika, put in diced meat -can be beef, pork, chicken- sear, add water, cook until done, but still has a sauce)
  • gulyasleves (goulash - which always makes me laugh as I think of all the ghouls waiting to come out while I cook it...)
  • rakott krumpli (my favourite. cook potatoes in skin, make hard boiled eggs and slice up chorizo. peel potatoes and slice them into nice round discs, same with eggs. Layer potato, egg, chorizo, sour creme, potato, eggs, chorizo, sour cream, .... end with potato and finish with sour cream. Put into oven,180 degrees for about 40 mins.)
  • rizskoch (All time favourite. It's kind of a rice cake. I think originally it's a jewish dish)
  • solet (this is a traditional jewish baked beans with goose leg baked in a special ceramic bowl - rommertropf- through a whole night on low/mid heat.
  • sacher torta (austrian chocolate cake)
  • speculoos (belgian biscuit)
  • ishler
  • lebkuchen (german puffy and soft, gingery xmas biscuit)

and now I am very hungry. :)

Gingerkittykat · 02/09/2020 00:51

Arbroath smokies
Stovies
Lentil and bacon soup

Svalberg · 02/09/2020 01:08

Black peas with vinegar
Steamed small potatoes in a cone
Bonfire toffee
Beestings (a sweet large bun filled with confectioners custard)

Graphista · 02/09/2020 01:10

@TheSunIsStillShining - if you have a good recipe for ghoulash I’d LOVE to know. I’m veggie now but used to have a friend who’s mum made it and I’ve yet to find a recipe where the spicing is quite right.

I’ve lived in Europe too and even over 20 years since the last time I still miss

Good quality genuine

Lebkuchen
Stroopwaffle
Dickmanns treats
Belgian waffles
Hot chocolate
German potato salad
Sauerkraut
Pickled garlic
Pickled peppers
Garlic mayo
Spiced ketchup - no idea exactly HOW the German ketchup is different but it’s MUCH nicer than Uk ones
Mushroom sauce
Potatoes 1001 ways but NEVER boring!
Knödel
1001 cheeses
Pretzels
Apfelkuchen
Strudel
Stollen
Schnapps in amazing flavours... I really could go on and on!

Guineapigbridge · 02/09/2020 05:11

New Zealander.
Can't beat fresh greenshell mussels served with a Marlborough sauvignon blanc and crusty bread.
Fresh central Otago cherries, picked straight from the tree.
Fresh caught crayfish or paua, off a mate's boat.

YenneferOfBattenberg · 02/09/2020 05:23

Greggs Peach melba.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 02/09/2020 06:25

I second Cooplands, I stock up on teacakes to toast when I go.
Black bullets.
Bacon hot pot, what the miners ate, according to my Dad. Very tasty and filling. Dad also loved pease pudding and even put it in when making soup.
Cumberland sausages and Wensleydale cheese.

sashh · 02/09/2020 06:53

You can get flat peaches in Iceland.

Yorkshire pudding cold with golden syrup.

Oatcakes.

Hot pork sandwiches (baps) with extra crackling, stuffing and gravy.

Pie and peas with red cabbage.

Fruit cake with cheese.

Can you tell I've moved around a bit?

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 02/09/2020 07:02

Casatiello from Naples at Easter. A savory bread stuffed full of italian meats and cheeses with hard boiled eggs.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 02/09/2020 07:05

@SilverOtter I came on to say hull pattie and chip spice, but definitely together 😍 along with big fat chippy chips, loads of vinegar and a blob of salad cream for me 🤤

Doyouknowthisisnotmyname · 02/09/2020 07:48

Silverotter . Hull pattie scraps and peas in that order . Lashings of vinegar and salt . From the chippie down hessle rd . I save the spice for kebab chips . Although I now know in hull they just call them patties, they look at me a bit funny when I ask for a hull pattie as if to say shes from over the watter.

SweatyBetty20 · 02/09/2020 07:48
