Oohhh! The Mooncup - she here! Now I just have to wait for my period (except that I'm hoping it doesn't come. I guess the excitement of using the mooncup will help allay any disappointment). I am quite disconcerted, looking at it, but will persevere.

Day three on the Mooncup thread...

actually, its more like day three of mooncup use in the cutie house. {grin]

Things much better today laydeeeees. not had so much trouble retrieving my lovely mooncup. DH nearly fainted when i told him about it.. but then he finds the concept of reusable nappies faintworthy... or vomit inducing, or both

anyone who is still not converted reading this thread... at hte start of the thread i was a definite 'think the idea is not bad but not for me eeeewwwwwww" kind of person.

I decided, what've i got to lose, other than a mooncup down the pan? well, i've not lost anything, i've gained in a big big way. It REALLY was a pleasure to have aunt flo visit this month. I know that will sound SO weird, but it truly was.

I felt clean, the whole time. I never had to worry about what underwear i was wearing. I didnt need to worry about leaking at night, and waking up with a pad that had got rucked up, mislodged and stuck to my pubes.

It has lasted much less time. tialign off well and truly ,by 3 days instead of 6-7. I've had NO cramps either.

why did I not try this 20 years ago???

go on... try it... because you're worth it!

FrannyandZooey · 13/10/2007 12:52

Susie you are a fab convert to the cult of Mooncuppery. I am so pleased it has worked out well for you - I felt the same - "eeeew" but "I really really should try this". They are so marvellous. They are not "ewwww" at all. Tampons and pads are pretty "ewww" and it makes us think our periods are revolting too

Habbibu - LOL at "The Mooncup - she here"

susiecutie · 13/10/2007 15:39

I just want to add again....

how did i ever think the idea of collecting my aunt flo in a clean cup which I cleaned, therefore know its safe and clean, was eww. as opposed to inserting a wad of cotton wool on string, handled by GOD KNOWS WHO!!! and then to remove said cotton wool, soaked and denched in blood, then to FLUSH this down the loo, into our water supplies????

THINK about it laydees... i mean really think about it... what is worse? truly?

i rest my case...

MiloMummy · 13/10/2007 16:03

I LOVE MY MOONCUP! Actually I miss not using it since I am PG!

I bought mine as I cloth nappied DS and thought I was being hypocrytical worrying about his landfill contribution whilst continuing to be very un-ecofriendly myself.

I have a q tho... does anyone know if you can get a replacement cloth bag because I've lost the one that came with mine and moony is currently gathering dust - literally!

Beelliesebub · 13/10/2007 16:09

I have to say, after reading about mooncups on mn for the last few months, I decided a couple of months ago to go and purchase my very own mooncup. So off I went to Boots in town and asked for said mooncup only to be looked at by the assistant like I was a complete and utter moron and a reply of "I don't know what yer mean!" So I got one online instead.... and it was cheaper... Sorry.... I went off on one there...!
Anyway, getting to the point... they're brilliant and to be honest the only thing I regret about getting it is the fact that I'm 41 and not 21 so I'll have considerably less time to use it...

Mine came with a little booklet and if you look on you tube there is a video to help you on your way.... using a glass and a mooncup, not the real thing....ewww

I hope it helps... I found that it's cut my days from 7 to 5 and for some reason it just feels right... I never really felt comfortable with tampons and pads always made me sore...

FrannyandZooey · 13/10/2007 17:46

Mellow do try, so many people have said it has helped with their period pain

MiloMummy you can have my old Mooncup bag if you want? I put mine in this which the lovely Pruni made for me

kerala · 13/10/2007 18:34

Go for it you wont regret! I switch a few months ago and never looked back. Cleaner, easier, neater, cheaper, greener. And the feeling of smugness walking down the sanitary products aisle in the supermarket and not needing to buy any of that stuff is pretty liberating somehow.

Was so impressed with it I risked appearing a weirdo and suggested it to the other real nappy user mums I know as thought they might be more receptive to it - and one of them has made the switch too.

hunkermunker · 13/10/2007 19:45

MrsMerton, I have heavy periods, well, I should say "had" - since I've used the Mooncup, not nearly as heavy.

I used to bleed, heavily, for the first three or four days. By the fourth day, it would have settled down to only being full a couple of times a day - before that, I could change it every couple of hours and it would be full.

For the first about four months, I used to wear a pad as well - a belt and braces approach, if you like. That meant if I couldn't get to the loo in time, I had a safety net. I still had fairly hefty period pain at this time too.

But from about the fifth month, that all changed - I was emptying it far less frequently - about the standard amount for a "normal" period - and instead of taking prescription painkillers, I took two paracetamol, taken once - and even those I only took because I was at work, and had to sit down - had I been more mobile I don't think I'd have needed them.

And now, about nine or so months after I started using it, I occasionally wear a pad right at the start if I think I might not be near a loo, but otherwise, I don't bother - and it doesn't leak. I don't fill it anything like as frequently either.

The thought of using tampons - putting cotton wadding in my vagina that leaches blood out of me, causes cramps and that horrible dragging feeling (which has gone too) - I can't tell you how unbearable a thought that is. With a mooncup, I feel far cleaner (no disgusting string, no soggy pad), far healthier (feels like there's a better "environment" internally, shall I say?!) and I'd never go back to tampons, ever.

Try one. If you don't get on with it, I think I'm right in saying you can send it back after three cycles for a full refund. But even if I still had pain, if I was still bleeding heavily, I'd still use it, because it's better than tampons.

jamboree · 13/10/2007 20:24

Sorry need to going back a step to the cleaning lark, I'm a bit concerned that using soap could upset your ph balance resulting in thrush or similar?

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks, do you think you could wipe it out with that antibacterial spray or pamper wipes if you can't get to a sink?

FrannyandZooey · 14/10/2007 17:45

I have never had any problem with washing it with eco type soap with no nasties in, but you don't have to use soap at all, you can just use hot water.

I personally would not use anything anti-bacterial like Triclosan, or a baby wipe on it. Too chemically. It needs ideally to be properly cleaned (ie a proper wash with hot water) 4 times in every 24. So if you are at work for part of the day or in town using public toilets, it would be ok to not wash it properly each time.

kd73 · 14/10/2007 17:53

Thanks for the advice!

warthog · 14/10/2007 18:36

f&z, are you still selling mooncups? i need another one since i flushed the last one down the loo.
ta very much.

mooncupconvert · 14/10/2007 20:45

You've convinced another one....have just ordered one and very bizarrely excited about my next af arrival. Thought about flushing all my tampax down the loo a la kicking the habit but then stopped, slapped my head and remembered one of the main points of the whole business. Can you sell half packs of tampax on ebay? hehe
