To feel so angry at the prospect of a no deal Brexit

The clock is ticking now and this looks like the most likely scenario. It's not fair on the almost half the population who voted remain, and it's not fair even on those who voted leave because it's so different from what they were promised. And, to inflict this on the country in the middle of the pandemic is the last thing we need.

If you can't see how racism was a significant factor in the Leave win you are being deliberately blind.

Absolutely. My second generation Indian immigrant colleague voted Leave "to stop all the immigrants coming in". Confused

AKissAndASmile · 27/08/2020 12:28

I guess he and PritiAwful would get on really well.

KenDodd · 27/08/2020 12:33

@StoneFacedCrone

In fairness I could do with that advice from the Express. I was just wondering what I should start stockpiling.

dwiz8 · 27/08/2020 12:37

From what I have seen leave voters are either thick, selfish or racist (and many a combination of all three)

That's not a group of people who should have their opinions listened too imo

Clavinova · 27/08/2020 12:37

I have yet to meet a leave voter IRL who hasn't expressed some sort of at least xenophobic opinion at some point.

So why did the remain camp pretend they would block Turkey joining the EU if they ever met the criteria to join? Why not just be upfront and admit they would welcome Turkey with open arms?

MistressMounthaven · 27/08/2020 12:43

Oh dear, a last failing gasp from an embittered remainer.
Move on, matey, move on for your own good.

Nope

Leave voters still thinking MEPs are unelected

That the issue in NI won't be a problem

Etc.

@Crankley you mentioned a Dutch paper was talking about Dutch companies preferring London to Amsterdam. Any chance of a link? not the Spectator's report on it.

I am astonished by this, as Amsterdam has already benefited from the Medicines Agency relocating there from London. I have a friend who made the choice to move with his banking job to Amsterdam.

Also this from the FN "If no agreement is reached on Brexit, City firms could lose access to the European markets overnight"... www.fnlondon.com/articles/uk-banks-under-pressure-to-move-staff-to-eu-brexit-hubs-now-20200826

New Financial says 332 financial services firms have already moved jobs out of London because of Brexit. Here's details of where the bank's HQs will be news.efinancialcareers.com/uk-en/3000398/brexit-banks-moving-out-of-london

Hoping Brexit is a disaster doesn't appear to be a particularly intelligent response to me.

Thing is, they know now, they even saw Lyra Kckee murdered, that knowledge hasn't moved the needle at all. I suspect, sadly, they don't give a shit.

Getting their way and 'winning' (too ignorant to see that there are no winners) are far more important to them than hard won peace and people's lives.

I thought we held all the cards? What happened to the oven ready deal? Easiest deal in human history?

Yes so who should be allowed to vote?

The fact is with a few exceptions, lunatics, prisoners and MPs(Not saying anything there) anyone of age can vote.

Until the communists take over

stuckdownahole · 27/08/2020 13:22

Unfortunately, the UK's only chance of getting an agreement is if the EU believe we will aggressively undercut them. Print more money, give bundles of state aid to industries, slash corporation tax, that sort of thing. There was a point at which the negotiations were more technical and less fraught, but it passed. We are now in a poker game.

This is what Gove and Cummings and the disaster capitalists wanted all along. Don't imagine that what any of us wanted was ever of much significance. As for the global pandemic, they couldn't have hoped for any better smokescreen for the catastrophe that's about to befall.

That is a straw man argument. Turkey is a very, very long way away from ever meeting any of the criteria. In fact, if they did, they would be culturally a completely different country.
InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 27/08/2020 13:34

I thought we couldn't get any more extensions. Is that true?

CrunchyNutNC · 27/08/2020 13:35

if the EU believe we will aggressively undercut them.

This is not necessarily within our gift though. We are not a low cost economy and we won't be permitted to throw money at it - WTO rules.

Clavinova · 27/08/2020 13:38

Jan 2020 -

"More than 1,400 EU-based firms have applied for permission to operate in the UK after Brexit, with over 1,000 of these planning to establish their first UK office, according to a Freedom of Information request (FOI) by financial regulatory consultancy Bovill. The FOI provides evidence that London and the UK will continue to be a leading player on the global financial stage after Brexit." ...

“Although much attention has been given to the number of UK firms moving staff and operations into Europe, there is also likely to be movement in the opposite direction. The results of the FOI may have been anticipated by those in the industry, many of whom have recognised for some time that London remains Europe’s only truly global financial centre, and firms on the continent with global aspirations will need to continue to do business here.”

Not many people took the opportunity to stop Brexit by voting LibDem at the last election, so I guess they're ok with it

Yes, the LibDems were the only party at the last election who promised to cancel Brexit. If the majority of voters now want to remain why didn’t they vote LibDem?

Orangecake123 · 27/08/2020 13:43

Survival of the richest.

KenDodd · 27/08/2020 13:46

if the EU believe we will aggressively undercut them.

And what will that undercutting look like?
Removal of workers rights?
Reduction in safety standards?
Reduction in environmental standards?

And before anyone starts with the "but the promised they wouldn't", don't be an idiot, they also insisted they weren't legally tied to minimum standards.

Requinblanc · 27/08/2020 13:48

Well, people were gullible enough to vote for the Tories and for Brexit.

This is a self-inflected disaster...

I can see why the rest of the world has no sympathy for a nation that chose xenophobia & displayed such levels of arrogance and entitlement.

Hopefully we will learn from this and make things better.

MaxNormal · 27/08/2020 13:56

RunningAwaywiththeCircus I don't believe for a second you voted Remain. Its the usual tactic of "I voted reman but" then some Brexiteer copy-paste.
