To say that if you are quite covid risk adverse there are some places it’s best not to go

Inspired by a few threads and personal experience.

I’m not saying stay at home and be isolated BUT... if you’re someone who is going to have a panic attack if someone gets within a metre it’s probably best to avoid

  • busy shopping centres
  • theme parks
  • pubs
-restaurants
  • busy hotels

I do get that this may sound unfair - but it’s the reality. If you feel vulnerable these probably aren’t the best places to go.

I had said ‘excuse me’ multiple times, as had another woman, and we had already waited around a minute. There were also other people behind us waiting to get into the shop as others left. It was unclear how much longer we’d have to wait. I didn’t ‘barge’ - I passed her at a distance of around 1 metre. How much more considerate could I have been of someone behaving in such an inconsiderate way?

luckylavender · 27/08/2020 11:01

I loathe this narrative that it's people trying to do the right thing who are in the wrong. We're still in a pandemic, the virus is still there. And yet Tory Britain tries to brainwash us into thinking differently.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 27/08/2020 11:21

Actually we aren’t in a pandemic. But as you were

Aridane · 27/08/2020 13:09

Gosh , @Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow - I don’t think the WHO, CDC etc got that memo. But as you were

IndecentFeminist · 27/08/2020 13:26

Technically we are not I think, hasn't it dropped below pandemic levels?

Shockingstocking · 27/08/2020 14:56

am very much of the idea we need to live with this virus now.

But SD and wearing a mask is living with the virus.

user1497207191 · 27/08/2020 15:11

@IndecentFeminist

Only because of the precautions/restrictions.

What is the measure you are going by? Because I am not aware of this but happy to be corrected by a government update.

Yes agree.

What some people seem to mean is 'we need to pretend this isn't happening'.

The people wearing masks etc are the people dealing with it and living with it.

Scentsandsensible · 27/08/2020 17:14

Oh god why has this ended up in a mask debate..

OP posts:
latticechaos · 27/08/2020 17:20

Because you started a thread about covid?

CrunchyNutNC · 27/08/2020 17:34

Because we are obsessed with them. Wearing them. Not wearing them. Being unable to wear them. Obsessed.

Scentsandsensible · 27/08/2020 17:35

@latticechaos erm but not about masks... is it given? Like asking how to cook a steak will descend into why sugar is the devil?

OP posts:
Fassspo · 27/08/2020 17:52

So those people who are following social distancing should never go anywhere because some people don't know how to social distance?
YABU.
People who are following social distancing aren't "precious" or rude, they just want their personal space which some people invade.
So maybe those who cant socially distance or those who can't be bothered to understand some people don't want others invading their space should avoid these places.

Fassspo · 27/08/2020 17:54

People should not stay inside because others can't control themselves not to stand right up their backside.
Why don't you stay inside OP if people who want to socially distance stress you out so much to make a thread?

latticechaos · 27/08/2020 17:56

I don't think it's totally off topic, no.

If you'd posted about horse racing, you'd have a point!

Scentsandsensible · 27/08/2020 18:25

@Fassspo not sure how many times I have to repeat myself - but I AM avoiding most of the places I’ve mentioned.

OP posts:
Scentsandsensible · 27/08/2020 18:26

And I didn’t say “not go anywhere” I said theme parks, packed pubs etc are not the best idea.

OP posts:
Quartz2208 · 27/08/2020 18:35

It can be incredibly difficult to effectively keep to 2m in some of these environments. Theme parks are such where there are just too many people to have that kind of space - there is no where to go.

Restaurants I have noticed that waitress dont necessarily where masks either.

I dont think this is a discussion about whether one should SD just that some environments are by nature very difficult to SD in.

clarepetal · 27/08/2020 18:37

Absolutely. Some people are very rude and I put it down to them being scared, until someone said to me after another person getting cross that we were in their way, if they aren't happy they should stay in.

Fassspo · 27/08/2020 18:41

@Scentsandsensible but just because you are doesnt mean other people have to. Some people want to socially distance without putting their life on pause.

No one has said you can stay 2m from everyone everywhere. The point is that some people don't do it even when they can.

You just told me to stay inside... I was responding to that!

No that isnt the point the OP is trying to make. She is saying that if you are anxious avoid the areas where sometimes even a 1m space can be tricky (I have been in a pub where the route to the toilet is a 1m corridor that you walk down the middle with tables either side).

Most pubs and restaurants I have been too have people trying there best to SD as best as they can

PiataMaiNei · 27/08/2020 20:46

Yes, posters keep trying to add caveats to what OP said. We've had a claim that this thread isn't about people who are genuinely unable to understand and consistently practice SD and now that it's not about spaces where full SD isn't possible. Both were wrong and were reading into the OP what they wanted to see. This thread is about times when SD doesn't happen, and there are multiple reasons for that.
